Work / Irish guy moving to Warsaw looking for work ( currently in Marketing sector ) [18]

You will be working longer hours, with less bank holidays.

Really?

Poland:
Statutory minimum holidays: 26 Ranking by statutory minimum: 2
Public holidays (days): 11 Ranking by public holidays: 8
Total holidays in a year: 37
The length of holiday in a calendar year depends on the seniority of the employee - 20 working days less than 10 years' service, 26 working days above 10 years' service

News / The US sends troops to Poland for drills [83]

As they say in this video it's only "signal of support" to Poland. It's too small reinforcement to mean anything to Russia. I agree with Szalawa that the missiles would be something.

the NATO promised Russia not to deploy troops in the new member countries, but now Putin taking over the Crimean peninsula has made them change their minds.

That not yet that. NATO promised not to send substantial forces to Poland. 600 troops to few countries is not substantial.

Life / Social Progress Index - Poland scores better than USA in few points. [4]

MEASURING NATIONAL PROGRESS - To truly advance social progress, we must learn to measure it, comprehensively and rigorously. The Social Progress Index offers a rich framework for measuring the multiple dimensions of social progress, benchmarking success, and catalyzing greater human wellbeing. The 2014 version of the Social Progress Index has improved upon the 2013 'beta' version through generous feedback from many observers. We continue to welcome your use and testing of our data, and feedback to help us continue to improve

When comparing with USA Poland scored better in:
- Nutrition and basic medical care: 98.18 vs 97.82
- Personal safety: 82.71 vs 77.70 (here surprisingly Poland has around the same number of death on the roads as USA, while in EU Poland is of the most dangerous countries)

- Access to Basic Knowledge: 97.37 vs 95.10
- Access to information and communications: 83.55 vs 81.33
- Ecosystem sustainability: 72.51 vs 53.78 (maybe they looked at the fact that Poland is becoming one big forest. in 40' forests were only 21% of the country area while now it's 30%)

and very close to USA in:
- Water and Sanitation
- Health and Wellness
- Personal Rights

USA, Canada / Employment prospects in Poland and USA with a Computer Science Degree from a Polish university? [18]

If USA is any similar to Germany in this case, then there is plenty of jobs both for experienced and novice programmers. There are many companies which for various reasons prefer not to outsource their tasks. Also if average programmer salary in California is 80 000 USD per year, then for sure there are some which are ready to employ novice for a fraction of that in order to save money. IT is not electronics and barrier of entrance to this market is very low.

Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

Don't exaggurate. Nobody expects her writing poems, so copying one is nothing wrong. International mail costs few PLN only. If she is going to build a house, then she is not poor. Asking for money is also all right, so people know not to bring some ne tv or vacoome cleaner. But you are not obliged to give them anything since you are not comming. It is all ok.

perspektywy.pl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3831&Itemid=849
here you have a ranking of IT programms in Poland. But it is for courses taught in Polish. I don't know what you can expect when it is in English. Probably that studies will be easier, because you will be paying and your co students will not be the best from Poland, but anyone from abroad who could afford. Currently it is easy to get a job as a programmer in Poland. Probably it will be the same in 4 years. As for diploma recognition in IT, more important is what you learned yourself and not where studied, but good university paper can help at the beginning to get into a good company, aspecially wgen you compete against candidates with similar skills and experience.

News / Little statistics about immigrants in Poland. Employment and job prospects. [25]

There was interesting article in Wyborcza, presenting few statistics about number of immigrants to Poland

To hire a man beyond our eastern border, you have to run around the offices and combine . Illegal employment of a foreigner is punished harder than the Pole - For years, working in Poland and earn almost two times more than in your country - tells us Oleh from Ukraine.

Number of work permit given for foreigners per voivodeship in 2013. (Black number is number of illegal caught).

Number of work permits issued in 2013, divided per nationality.

Here surprisingly China is on 2nd place with 3089 people, while so little Chinese people seem to be writing on this forum. And there is only 1300 permits for Indians (5th place).

Article explains how employer can easily prove that there are no local candidates for the job in order to get work permit for a foreigner. There is example of employing Belarusan for the position of programmer. First the job of the programmer for 1800pln grsoss is advertised. Nobody applied, so foreigner can get work permit. He's employed for advertised 1800pln. The trick is that he signs extra Umowa od dzieło, where he gets the rest of salary. In that way foreigner earns effectively more than 1800, but the law is not broken.

Another important information mentioned there is that a Polish company, employing foreigner for over 3 months, doesn't need to prove that there are no local people wanting to do the job. It can be the case when Ukrainian or Belarusan works in Poland without permit (as they don't need it for work up to 6 months per year), but wants to work longer than 6 months.

Study / Bachelors in Civil / Mechanical Engineering Degree in Poland [39]

@Jardinero: There are many production plants in Poland, but they're not Polish, so R&D is not here. Few mentioned by you Polish companies produce mostly from parts designed by western companies. They do some designing too, but it's really not much for the size of country. Reality of graduates is often quite sad, as this man writes (google translation):

forum.cad.pl/studia-mechanika-i-budowa-maszyn-t80700.html#p7684634

I realized that google translate is not readable so here it's the same text with few fixes (very few):

One thing it is to study, level of difficulty , etc., the second thing - much more important it really is future work .

I can write it as it looks from the perspective of nearly 10 years of professional experience as a design engineer .

Studies on MiBM are quite difficult (at least that was when I was studying ) but now you can earn a degree while doing nothing , and nothing get from studies, except of the paper, which today no longer has any meaning. Studies will be difficult for you then when you want to reach something with it. If you want to work later in the profession, have it easy to find work in the future , unfortunately you'll have to do some work for it .

MiBM always enjoyed big popularity among high school graduates - but it's just not an argument . Pedagogy for example, has great interest and what does it mean? The decisions of young people are rarely rational.

However, I absolutely do not intend to encourage you to study, on the contrary - advise against .
I managed to find a good job Poland (several national averages , developmental work , interesting ) , but most of my friends with ( even very good students ) or not working in the profession, or work for 3-3.5 zł on hand doing really difficult and responsible profession .
After MiBM in truth you can work in various positions , but they are all rather similarry paid . Most earn traders and it is respectively the easiest job. Unfortunately, a designer engineer earns on avrage very badly. Given the enormous responsibility that lies on the constructor ( the error may cause a disaster , and prison ), the average salary for this position is embarrassing. For comparison, a civil engineering designer earns several times more ! ( which of course now changing due to the crisis in the construction sector ) .

I somehow managed to find my place in this difficult construction labor market and earn good money .
But many of my colleagues, graduates of economy, often even various funny private universities , earn a lot more than I am, doing a simple not stressfull and irresponsible work .

Yes, I admit that during the month I receive few job offers, which most of them are simply embarrassing when it comes to salaries . It would seem that no intelligent and reasonable person would risk his nect for the salary of room painter , but the reality is different - I do not know how to explain it but there it is .
This is a scam that there is shortage of engineers , do not believe the media. There is no deer to work for 2500 PLN on hand.

Of course, after 10 years the situation may be different , it describes the current state . But I advise you seriously to consider the choice of the Technical University - not unless you want to choose IT.

Law / Info needed for settlement permit in Poland or EC long term resident permit [2]

Call them or send an email and tell us if they could help you. migrant.info.pl/#!prettyPhoto. The website is run from public money and the advertise hotline number.

But If I understand correctly this quote from government website, then Permit for settle can be obtained relatively fast through family or being refugee. Otherwise requires 10 years living in Poland. While permission for the permanent stay in Poland can be obtained in 5 years by anybody.

So:

Which category I will be eligible to apply after 5 years of stay in Poland since I am from Non-EU country (Asia)?

You will be able to apply for "permission for the permanent stay in Poland". "permission to settle" you will be able to get only if a war starts in India, and you will become a refugee or if you marry Polish citizen.

I think these 2 papers have have no other differences except of the differences in obtaining them.

9) How can a foreigner obtain a permission for the permanent stay in Poland?

Permissions granted for indefinite period of time are the permissions to stay as the long-term resident of the European Community and the permissions to settle.

Pursuant to Article 64, Paragraph 1 of Act of June 13th 2003 on foreigners (unanimous text, Journal of Laws of 2006, No. 234, Item 1694 with later amendments), the permission to settle can be granted to a foreigner who:

1)is a minor, and a child of a foreigner who has the permission to settle and was born within the territory of the Republic of Poland;

2) had been married to a Polish citizen for at least three years before the application submission and who had been constantly staying within the territory of the Republic of Poland for at least 2 years before the application submission on the basis of the permission to reside for the determined period of time.

3) directly before the submission of the application had been continuously staying within the territory of the Republic of Poland for the period of time no shorter than 10 years on the basis of the consent for a tolerated stay or a consent for a stay for a period of 5 years because of the refugee status grant.

4) is a child of a Polish citizen and remains under the parental authority.

Foreigners can also apply for the permission to stay as a long-term resident of the European Community (Article 65 of Act on foreigners), which is granted, as in the case of the grant of the permission to settle, for an indefinite period of time to a foreigner who had been legally and continuously staying within the territory of the Republic of Poland directly before the application submission for at least 5 years., provided that the foreigner has:

1) a stable and regular source of income which can cover the expense of his/her own living and the living of the members of his/her family who are dependent on him/her and
2) health insurance as understood by the regulations on common health insurance, or has the confirmation of the cost of health care within the territory of the Republic of Poland being covered by the insurer.

The foreigner can submit an application for the permission to settle or the permission to stay as a long-term resident of the European Community during the legal stay within the territory of the Republic of Poland. The application for the permission to settle or the permission to stay as a long-term resident of the European community should be submitted to the voivode appropriate for the planned place stay of the foreigner. Additionally, the foreigner is obliged to justify the application, present a valid travel document and attach the following documents to the application:

1) photographs of persons referred to in the application;
2) documents necessary to confirm data included in the application and circumstances justifying the application for the permission to settle or the permission to stay as a long-term resident of the European community;
3) a legal title to occupy premises in which the foreigner stays or plans to stay and documents which confirm the amount of the residence costs.

Law / Poles going to live in the UK or elsewhere and their tax residency status? They pay tax to Poland? [15]

Does it mean that British citizen who stayed for 184 days in Poland but the rest in UK has to pay taxes for money earned in UK in UK and for money earned in Poland in Poland? It's more than 90 days in Britain and more than 183 in Poland.

On the other hand Pole who would work for 184 days in UK and the rest in Poland would need to pay taxes for earnings in Poland and UK , in UK only? Because he would spend less than 183 days in Poland?

Law / Poles going to live in the UK or elsewhere and their tax residency status? They pay tax to Poland? [15]

South Shields is not taxable as world income by the Poland tax office

There is no world income only single agreement country with country. There are some countries which don't have such agreement with Poand or less favorable and then Pole has to pay tax if he lived there.

The difference in the tax-free allowance between the two countries must make many Polish people gasp in disbelief when they arrive

that what you say is how countries treat less fortunate - lower earning population. So many Poles while moving to UK and taking lower payed jobs are gaining double: 1st because they move to higher wages country and 2nd because they benifit tax exempt for poorer people. If somewhone is earning well, then more important than tax free amount is total taxation (as bigger chunk of their salary is not tax free anyway).

Poland does however have one big plus as far as tax is concerned: liability for tax generally (there are a few exceptions that affect almost nobody) kicks in at 183 days per year rather than the UK's 90.

Are you saying that if British spends 90 days in UK and the rest in Poland then he has to Pay tax both in UK and Poland?

Also how do they count the 183 days? Because different countries have tax year in different months. (not from January 1st to December 31).

Travel / Quickest and easiest way of travelling from Miedzyrzec Podlaski to Krakow? [9]

Convince your friend to visit you in Warsaw. From Warsaw to Kraków you can go with relatively fast train (3.5h). He can be in Warsaw in 2h from Miedzyrzec Podlaski both with bus and train. It's completely not on your way. Look at e-podroznik.pl for public transport. Planes don't have much sense when train takes less than 4h.

Love / Cannot get married as a catholic in Poland if I don't have sacraments - No kids without Church marriage [9]

She has to apply to her bishop for marriage permit with not a christian. She will get it, so it's not a problem. Only requirement is that you will have to sign that you have nothing against children becoming Catholics. You can google about it, for example here:

prawno.diecezja.lublin.pl/Sakramenty/Malzenstwo/malzenstwo-arty.html

So since one problem is solved, only 2nd left - money. Women are not cheap, so be a man and save enough money for this ceremony if she wants it. You could only try convincing her to keep it moderate, because traditional Polish weddings are unhealthy sumptuous.

2 more things:
I think there is some fast track for you to become Catholic if you want.
Also about the money, you should expect to get back at least 50% of costs from guests, so it's not so burdensome for your budget as may seem.
