USA, Canada / Polish-Americans as seen in the false mirror. Type A and Type B. [141]

immigrants from Poland who have arrived recently in America and gotten citizenship, but these Polish-Americans are by far the minority of Polish-Americans. Polish-Americans number some 10 million people most of whom are 2nd, or 2rd, or, 4rth generation American citizens.

True some 660,000 people in America speak Polish at home, just part of them are American citizens. So the rest of the 10 million are 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th generation Americans and are well assimilated.

News / U.S., Poland sign military aviation accord [24]

don't forget who started WWI as well!

trades and armies don't go from Turkey via Serbia via Adriatic, but east to west in Europe. As to WWI the European nations were itching for war years before it broke out that whole assassination was an excuse, plus Austrians at first just wanted to punish the Serbs not start a WW.

Perhaps you should look at Russian policy towards Serbia to see how little interest Russia has in many countries these days.

Serbia is not that important, a small country on the outskirts of Europe. Poland is a large central European nation between Germany and Russia. It's the crossroads of Europe, that's why it had so many wars.

Type I is the stereotypical "Polack" - very uptight about Poland, regards themselves as being Polish, claims to be an expert on Poland, blindly supports the rhetoric of parties who "defend Poland"

they can be called Plastic Poles

You had anyone in particular in mind??? If you meant me I'm far from being Plastic. You'll never look or have a Polish mentality, i even doubt you'll learn to speak our language well.

The opposite actually, it's nice though :)

wrong

Serious question: why does Poland want "American boots" on the ground? Why not other countries' boots? What's so special about the USA?

Putting the sarcasm apart. American forces are the strongest that's why.

In my opinion Poland should get the american nukes from Germany.
Germans definitely don't want them anylonger and Poland might feel assured with having them and the US will still have their nukes in Europe.

A win-win-win situation!

Russian politicians and military leaders say Poland is and will be their sphere of influence. That alone says what plans the Russians have for Poland. A strong American presence, with American troops and billions of dollars of American military hardware(ABM missiles, fighter planes, bases) on the ground will give Poland a much better security guarantee than it's basic NATO membership. Poland will gain something on the lines of what Germany has from the US.

Edit: DID YOU WRITE "SILESIAN GERMANS"? Penny, you would be annihilated in Upper Silesia

I know what they are or call themselves (Silesians) they are in reality not true Silesians (Slavs) but Germans who stayed in the Silesian region, therefore Silesian Germans. Those Silesian Slavs have long seen themselves as Poles.

they always picture themselves as some different Darkish color with a white man's features etc

Because they know it's more attractive and favorable, beauty sells these days. Look at rap videos, or movie stars or girls with wealthy boyfriends. If it's a woman of color, she is or looks mixed, caramel complexion and white facial features. P.S. You think Obama would have been picked if he was jet black?

Guessie, thank you for answering. The point is: Someone pointed out that 80% of US Polonia voters chose a presidential candidate in Poland while the same candidate lost his votes in Poland.

I've never said I'm an expert, i just said i definitely know more than the average Pole. I know Poles who just came over and don't even have a basic knowledge of Polish history or the political scene. P.S just because you're a PO supporter and the slight majority of Poles are on your side doesn't mean you're right. Maybe that 30 of so percent of PiS supporters in Poland are right?? Maybe PO supporters are being liberal just to be liberal, or supporting a prime ministers party just because it's from their region( Pomerania) or because he represents a ethnic minority (Kasubians, Silesian Germans).

USA, Canada / Polish-Americans as seen in the false mirror. Type A and Type B. [141]

I've been to the US 3 times. Do I qualify as an American?

It's gonna be 20 years since i came here on July 1st. You just visited. Me visiting Canada didn't make me a Canadian.

Yes, I'd feel American for the rest of my life, no matter where I would live.

But probably over 10, 20 years of living in that "distant" land you'd feel you're both. Some people on this forum say ignorant stuff like 'you have to choose one" when they've never lived a day in another country.

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

Bridge or no bridge the road didn't hold the weight of the truck, just like in the second set of photos.

In meantime - see the current status of motorways' construction, from money.pl

Lodz is in a great position center of the country. It will benefit from a whole network of motorways and in a few years that high speed rail line, maybe even a central airport if they go ahead and build it.

USA, Canada / Polish-Americans as seen in the false mirror. Type A and Type B. [141]

True and false. People Type A come to Poland from time to time and I meet them. People Type B have no reason to come to Poland as to the most hopeless place in the world.

Fair enough. I've been back to Poland 7 times do I qualify as a type A ? :)
I know what you mean i know a few Poles that don't even go back and when someone asks them about Poland how is it say something negative like "there's nothing there to see" that's wrong. That's just enforcing old false stereotypes about Poland.

News / U.S., Poland sign military aviation accord [24]

"This memorandum of understanding means that by the end of 2012 we will have in Poland a detachment allowing for the permanent rotation of American military aircraft, both combat and transport aircraft," Defence Minister Bogdan Klich said.

"From 2013 we plan the regular and periodic presence of aircraft and the training of pilots four times a year," Klich told reporters after the signing ceremony with the U.S. ambassador to Poland, Lee Feinstein.

Poland, a NATO member since 1999, has long lobbied for "American boots on the ground" to counter what it perceives as a more assertive Russian stance in central and eastern Europe.

The U.S. military is rotating a Patriot battery through Poland as part of efforts to upgrade Polish air defences.

During his visit to Warsaw, Obama and Polish leaders also reaffirmed plans for Poland to host SM-3 interceptors from 2018 under a revamped U.S. missile defence programme.

Would you afford US$20 yearly to be still able write stuff like this?

What are you even talking about??? Being patriotic isn't trying to be in club Europe at any cost pleasing, licking your neighbors asses. It means to do what is good for your country first, you think they'd think about you before themselves? wake up. What they say and will do for you are two entirely different things, push comes to shove they leave Poland out to dry.

Meaning Poland's Poles are not patriotic? How interesting.

They've been corrupted by greed and ongoing pursuit of wealth. By Tusk's crusades to bring in foreign investors at any cost, sacrificing. In general Poles in eastern and southern Poland are more patriotic.

lol the fact that 80% of US Polonia voted Kaczynski is just scary, they shouldn't be allowed to vote!

No No NO, It's because Polonia is 80% patriotic and knows Kaczynski did everything for the good of Poland not to satisfy his EU lords.

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

I'm glad to hear that. I used to be curious and friendly towards Jews, but right from the beginning I came across very many examples of Jews simply hating Poles for being Poles.

I've met them as well. The ones who have assimilated fully into a particular society, who see themselves as American or Poles first (depending on which country they live it) and the as Jews, are the nice ones, in general.

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

That is very interesting, cause most Jews you can meet on Jewish sites are very antipolish to the very bone marrow.

I've said it before, I had a neighbor Polish Jew who had a huge Polish flag up by his house whole year round, only took it down on Jewish holidays, for an Israeli flag. A Jewish lawyer here in the Philadelphia suburbs (a Krakow Jew) very nice guy, one of my best friends is of a Polish/Jewish mix, all good people. You were probably talking about American Jews, more specifically New Yorkers.

Of course being antipolish is not nearly as bad as being antisemitic...

Same thing, so that had to be your sarcasm....

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

I think Sobieski's take on things is sadly true! While 50,000 does seem a bit high

It might be even more than that, they lived in Poland (in large numbers) since Casimir the Great allowed them to come, you think some lived a non religious life or didn't mix a bit with the locals? It might be even 100 thousand people with full or partial Jewish background. Here in the States I've met quite a few Polish Jews, most love Poland and are patriotic.

News / Jerusalem Post: Poland's good intentions [30]

They are, in blood :( :( :(

True the Palestinians were driven out of their land and are treated as 2nd or even 3rd class citizens. Yet it's hard to see Israeli aggression on the news channels.

News / Jerusalem Post: Poland's good intentions [30]

Germany was a different case, most of world opinion shared their view of Jews being victims of Germans. Poland was a victim also country was invaded destroyed, million of ethnic Poles were killed. Poland can't be responsible for what the Nazis did or later communists, enforced by Soviet armor.

News / Jerusalem Post: Poland's good intentions [30]

Yes I appalled myself ;)
One side of me doesn't want Poland to give in to their demands, who are they to say Poland must pay there's a dozen other nations who took from others and have no intention of paying ever. Jews seam to think they're special. Another side thinks if this will really get them to buzz off, forever (not to come back with yet another demand) then maybe so be it.

Food / Borscht - Zurek / Bialy barszcz recipe [153]

If i remember correctly there is a difference between barszcz biały and żurek, different flour used. My grandma made barszcz biały the traditional way, where she put a loaf of bread in a jar for a week dumped that into a pot with water, sausage, onions etc. Came out delicious. BTW Seanus, is shepherd's pie a Scottish dish, or British in general?
