News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

Which is very confusing, by the way.

I can imagine ;)
You know, Poland is quite a homogeneous country so I guess it can be sometimes confusing for a Pole too when a Karel says he's Russian, for example ;)

And pretty anti-russian (all other nationals have "their" term, and actual russians are invisible, it's like they don't exist).

No, Russians have "their" term too - it's "Rosjanie" ;) It's the proper, official way of describing Russian ethnic group.

I wonder who started it. I am ethnic Ukrainian, but I live in the states. I get tired of explaining who I am, because everybody considers me Russian by default (since I am from that part of the world). It must be pretty frustrating for the actual russian-russians too, I think.

Oh, don't worry about that. There are people in the West who think that Warsaw is in Russia :)
My professor who left communist Poland in the 50's or 60's and stayed in the US told us that he was called a "commie" all the time, although he wasn't a communist.

This is simply people's ignorance.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation!

No problem :)

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

I was just making the lingusitc point that a standard word in one language (Polish) can be pejorative in another (Russian). No justification was intended.

It was a comment to PennBoy's post, not yours.

What is the (polite) polish term for actual russians (as opposed to tatars or bashkirs or chechens or yakuts or...)?

Rosjanie.

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosjanie

In Russia, the term "rossyjskij", means citizen of Russian Federation. It's a term for all residents who could be of different nationalities. A particular Rossiyanin can be actually russian (ruski), or udmurt, or buryat, or whatever. It's similar to "British" (which can be actually english, or scottish, or ...).

I am aware of that, but there's no such differentiation in Polish, English and probably in other languages also.
If you want to say in Polish "a citizen of Russian Federation" you can say "obywatel rosyjski", "obywatel Rosji", "obywatel Federacji Rosyjskiej".

Although the term "Rosjanie" is also commonly used to refer to the citizens of Russia, regardless of their ethnicity, just as with "Russians" in English.

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

The problem is that word "Ruski/Ruska/Ruscy" is associated with the attitude of Poles towards Russians and Russia and I think it quite often stems from it. Not always, not in your case, but quite often it does.

By "attitude" I mean this:

Which - according to the general Polish stereotype - so we find the eastern border ? First of all - the Russians . The Russians , which include both the Russians and the Ukrainians and Belarusians , because the average Pole barely three nations from each other distinguish . Often the " Russian " we throw the bag yet - Polish generous hand - Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians , but recently it happens now - thankfully - less frequently. The Baltic States are together with us and the EU and Schengen , and the Estonian - which is the statistical information they already suppressed admiration assimilated - anything you can get on the Internet and pay for parking SMS - em.

And the "attitude" as shown in this quote from the article:

Ulrich opowiada jak pewnego dnia jechał busem do Mniowa na dyżury terapeutyczne. - Jakoś tak zeszła rozmowa na temat Luby. I ci ludzie, do obcego w końcu mężczyzny, jakim dla nich byłem, w ogóle się nie krępowali. Ruska to, ruska tamto, epitety, pamiętam ten rechot Leppera w całym busie. Wtedy zrozumiałem, jak Luba może się czuć na tej wsi - opowiada.

Even in Polish dictionaries this word is described as "disrespectful" ("lekceważący"):

sjp.pwn.pl/slownik/2518189/rusek

I've noticed that Russians tolerate this word only when it's coming from some hardcore rusophiles.

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

From what i've heard Żyd is offensive now in Russia.

So? What's your point? If someone in Russia is an antisemite it means Poles are allowed to be offensive to all Russians?

And i did notice twice from Russians when i called them Ruski they got mad.

Was it in Poland?
Well, I would say they weren't overreacting. Poles' attitude towards Russians and Russia + calling them "Ruscy/Ruski/Ruska" = a very unpleasant mix for Russians.

Also, I might add to what you say, it doesn't matter what you feel or how you interpret the words you are using, it is how the person about whom you are talking takes it.

Um... I would say completely the other way around.

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

PennBoy, I also wasn't paying any attention to this word until I started discussing with Russians. After that I suddenly started to notice it and pay attention how it's used and why.

Remember that there was a time when antisemitism and calling someone "Żydek" was something normal and nothing out of the ordinary...
I know that Poles often say that it's just a "zdrobnienie" or "potoczne słowo", but why won't they call Russians like that in the face? You ever wondered why?

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

Pierogi ruskie?

This name is derived from Ruś Czerwona (Red Ruthenia), not from Russia (Rosja):

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Ruthenia

Well if they feel like it's offensive maybe they should change it, the Polish word for Gypsy Cygan (same also in Russian) became offensive since Cygan is slang for liar, so they prefer to be called Roma.

I don't follow articles and news that much, but one Pole claims that in Polish newspapers and on TV they're already replacing "Cyganie" with "Romowie".

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

Yeah it is for me.

For me also.

I wouldn't say rusek to anyone and when I use it to tell somebody about someone, it feels like an insult towards the person I'm telling about.

Yes, I wouldn't say "rusek" to anyone either and I wouldn't use this word behind their back.

That word is neutral not a slur, it's simply an old fashioned way of calling a Russian from when Russia was Kievan Rus

Are you sure? Maybe ask Russians living in Poland what they think about this word.

And in English (once again) Pollack is always offensive, if you're speaking Polish or Russian or some other language where Polak means a Pole then its ok to say it.

LOL

Oh but Americans also claim that Polack "is neutral not a slur" and everything depends on the context :)

A Russian guy posted a link to the article in Polish about it on one blog:

Love / Good looking Polish women with ugly men [416]

I couldn't agree more :)
Men seem to forget that women are not such visualizers as men. And people have other qualities besides looks.
I’ve visited some Western countries and men there didn’t strike me as more handsome or attractive than Polish men. The only difference was that in Italy they were far more bold than Polish men.

It’s funny how arrogant Western men are on this forum.

PS: And polish women do look like their fathers.

Yup, like my cousin for example :) And she’s not ugly at all :)

Love / Concerns about Polish Family / Child Support Law [68]

People rarely react rationally when confronted with information they don't want to receive.

It is a norm on the planet called Earth that relationships are based on... brace yourself... feelings and emotions as well as physical attraction. Normal people who dated someone for three weeks don't inquire about family law in case a girl will get pregnant, for God's sake... And for sure normal people don't decide about going out with somebody or not based on what kind of family law there's in hers/his country of origin.

So it will be only natural if she finds your... attitude... out of the norm.

And this one is pretty emotional.

Then I feel sorry for her already. I suspect she'll be pretty shocked. But she should know the truth.

Btw, I would advise you to date women who are... erm... similar to you. Stay away from emotional girls. Or you'll end up hurting many women, Mr. Spock.

Love / Concerns about Polish Family / Child Support Law [68]

Nah, too much drama would arise from that.

I think you owe her the truth for being such a cold, calculative jerk. At least she won't regret that you two are not together when she finds out what kind of person you are and she won't think that there was something wrong with her, that it was her fault that you dumped her. You deserve this drama, mister. Don't be a coward.

Love / Concerns about Polish Family / Child Support Law [68]

There will be no love making. Knowing this risk, I won't be able to go maintain a relationship - I'll simply fear the consequences too much. I owe her to be able to trust her. But I simply can't when the law on the area is put together like this.

O_____O

It will be definitely better for the girl if you don't "maintain this relationship"...

It's a relationship Jim, but not as we know it.....

xD

Well they sure know how to party on planet Vulcan. Or so the story goes. Star Trek doesn't cover it well enough.

Oh... They play chess there? What a decadence...

If she is willing to get involved with you , then grab her and don,t let go , whatever she costs....

She may be the only one on this planet that you will get....

Yes, it's logical, women from the planet Vulcan are hard to come by on the planet Earth...

There is nothing wrong with running a predictable economy :P

with this woman.

Your subjective evaluation of my class aside, I don't believe in letting emotion rule my life. Every decision needs to be evaluated for the potential risk it imposes.

Maybe I should have added this, since this seems to be a subject that provokes emotional reactions:

O__O

:D

Am I going a bit lala here or does anyone else think this thread is a bit woo woo?

I think scguy comes from the planet Vulcan... :)

Fascinating...

LOL

I don't know if there is a cultural significance here, but it seems that you guys react VERY negatively towards actually considering what one is doing, instead of just jumping into something without doing the proper research first.

By "cultural significance" you mean that British men don't come from the planet Vulcan, but Swedish men do?

Life / The most dissapointed with Poland are those who have Polish origins. [35]

The few I'm thinking of actually were (at least that was my understanding).

So you're not sure? Were they living in Poland? I have an impression there are very little "real Poles" on this forum.

My main point was that we often see what we like to see based on our own biases, our own perceptions.

True, I can see this in your comment:

I've noticed a lot of complaining about Poland here on PF (that's the main topic of most threads about Poland, or at least those most popular ones), complaining about Poles (especially Polish women) and anti-Polish comments too :)

I didn't read delphiandomine's thread "Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture"" because the word "Polack" put me off, I just thought reading it would be a waste of time. So I don't know who wrote what on those 18 pages. But I know delphiandomine isn't a Pole, jola1 is.

Have you read that thread?

Life / The most dissapointed with Poland are those who have Polish origins. [35]

Within minutes there were several post pointing out that this person was not a real Pole as he couldn't even speak Polish. I've seen it numerous times.

Were those posts written by Poles? I don't think so. I've noticed that it's usually foreigners who ridicule "Plastic Poles" (you won't even here such expression in Poland, Poles who live abroad are simply called "Polonia").

There's this thread created by delphiandomine:

[urlc=hhttps://polishforums.com/usa-canada/polack-american-polonia-plastic-pole-culture-47480/2/]Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture"[/url]

who's asking:

Seriously, why do real Poles put up with them?

And what that "real Pole" answers?

We like people of Polish descent who are interested in Polish culture, history, etc. Unlike you, we are not that critical about the small stuff. Relax, and start a cool thread instead of this nonsense.

Is delphiandomine a Pole?
No, he isn't, fortunately.

Love / Polish relationships (race and religion) [140]

more than enough arguments, but obviously you didn't read any.

All I've read were your views that white women shouldn't date men of other races.
So where are those arguments? Can you point them to me? Where are they in this thread?

why would i bother finding proof? here you show that you very well know about the conclusions of scientific research:

I know nothing about any scientific research, I just heard it somewhere, probably in some American film or something :)
So, let's assume for a minute it's true. Asians are more intelligent than other races.
Consider that when people mate they try to choose the best gene "bank". Intelligence would be a major factor. We all want are children to be intelligent. So... women of all races, including white women, should mate only with Asian men in order to get the best genes for their children! White men won't get any. Yup! ASIAN DOMINATION, BWAHAHAHA!!! :D

and now please answer me, you are also one of these degenerated Polish girls who dates out of her race?

You are funny :)
No, but I wouldn't mind dating a man of other race if I liked him and found him attractive :)
And those Polish girls aren't degenerated. They are far better human beings than you are.

Love / Polish relationships (race and religion) [140]

another one getting personal because he doesn't have arguments.

I see you are a hypocrite and apply double standards. May I remind you that who's dating who is personal and none of your business?

And what arguments have you provided? In favour of what? Of racial purity? LOL

It has been proven that big intelligence differences exist between the 3 main races.

You mean that Asians are more intelligent than white people? :)

Before talking crap again, you better check the facts first.

You claim that "big intelligence differences exist between the 3 main races" so it's you who should prove that what you claim is true.

another one getting personal because she can't deny the facts.

Well, somebody had to tell you the truth :)
Btw, what "facts"? lol

let me guess, you are also one of those Polish girls selling yourself cheaply to 3rd world guys?

Hehe, firstly, I don't sell myself to anybody, cheaply or not.
Secondly, I don't think I've seen many "3rd world guys" where I live (and it's southern Poland :)). But I've seen two Asian women lately, having a walk with a cute little Asian girl :) I don't know whether they were from the "3rd world" you're talking about, though :)

Travel / Would Polish visit Greece for it's islands or for it's history ? [30]

Paulina , I mean 3 days on a tour but with sleepovers in hotels close to the areas visited every day !!!

Ah, that's great then :D

I can sleep on a bus , I can sleep practically EVERYWHERE (!) but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone , especially since there are soooo much to visit therefore the days are long !

Indeed, sightseeing is a much better experience after a decent meal, a shower and a good night sleep :)

Thank you soooooo much for these forums , I had a look , looks like something I could really use ! Thank you again Paulina !

You're welcome :) I'm glad I could help :D

I hope that all of you will be able to go there, because I fell in love with this country and I will visit it again next year for sure, who knows... :))))D"

Travel / Would Polish visit Greece for it's islands or for it's history ? [30]

So you would enjoy 3 days in a bus doing a tour of central greece , delphes , epidaure , olympia and afterwards a cruise in the greek islands ?

Yes, this sounds interesting :) I suspect people who have never been to Greece would like to do some sightseeing, so, Athens, with The Acropolis and visiting some museums with all those statues, pottery and other ancient stuff :) The theatre at Epidaurus, Delphi, etc. And a cruise afterwards - this sounds nice :)

3 days in a bus doing a tour - that would mean sleeping on the bus? I usually can't sleep on the bus :/ But that's only me ;)

nobody wants to go to Greece anymore

I don't know about other people, but I would :P Never been there yet ;)

as it's overpriced, with filthy sea, strewn with rubbish and full of extremely rude people.
Turkey or Croatia offer a far better all round holiday experience, in my opinion.

I guess there are some ruins from ancient times in Turkey and Croatia, but I'm sure you can get far more and more interesting in Greece, so if someone's interested in sightseeing specifically this kind of stuff, Greece is the place, I guess. If you go somewhere only to relax, to lie on the beach and swim then Turkey and Croatia is probably as good or better, I don't know.

People seem to be pleased with Greece judging by what they write on this forum:

I merely pity those who belittle others from speaking the former's native tongue under the misguided illusion their English is "better" and the other person's attempts s**ck.

Sometimes it isn't a "misguided illusion" :) What then?
When someone's Polish/English/any other language is really basic (or even less than basic) or the pronunciation makes what the person says unintelligible it can be a real pain to communicate. At first you may smile and nod politely but on an everyday basis it could be irritating, I suspect :)

Language / The Future of Polish Language [179]

There's this Polish b'itch in my house who's been studying abroad for 2 years only and refuses to speak Polish to me. Says it's easier to speak in English. Can you believe this s'hit?

Actually I can't believe she even speaks to you at all considering how you call her. Do you call her like that also in front of her or just behind her back?

"Says it's easier to speak in English. Can you believe this s'hit?"

Well, if you try to speak to her in Polish and your Polish sucks then it may be easier for her when you speak in English. Or if you speak in English and expect her to answer you in Polish it's also not so easy for the brain to switch from one language to another.

Do you see my problem?

Yes, you have a problem.

Gonna have to slap that b'itch sometime. Knock some sense into her.

Slap yourself.

Who's that woman, anyway? Your housemaid?
