Travel / Which parts of Poland are more beautifull? (North, South, East, West or center) [13]

Mazury

I find Mazury to be hugely overrated - really nothing special at all. Podlasie, however is underrated - more people should visit and it's much nicer than Mazury. The Jura Krakowsko Częstochowska is also very worth visiting, as is the region around Klodzko.

I suppose it all depends on what you want to see and do.

News / Anybody watch Adam Michnik on Lis this evening? [50]

A guy who's lost all the credibility he had - not the best person to be in post during a period where Sunday attendance is hæmorrhaging. I wouldn't be surprised if the new Holy Father doesn't step in sooner or later.

Life / Should I move to Poland -- LDR. Cultural differences? [6]

My brother visited from England recently and I bet him 100PLN that he wouldn't see more than 10 foreigners (ethnically colored people) during his weeks stay. I won the bet by 9 as he actually only saw 1 chinese person. He was amazed!

Recently? That sounds like it was in some small town.

Now the Polish people are very warm and welcoming

Some are, some aren't - same as anywhere.

colored

Are you sure you're from England?

The OP shouldn't worry about racism here any more than at home. She should be concerned if it's her first time living in Europe - some20 year olds can handle adventure and some4 find it much harder.

Travel / English cigarettes - where to buy in Poland? [41]

embassy or regal really

Not now sold in Poland - they were around for a while.

Lambert & butler

Sold anywhere the financially and culturally impoverished visit. But then again, you don't find many smokers above a certain socio-economic level these days.

Benson and Hedges are available in larger cities.

A lots of them are made in Poland so they maybe slightly different

"A lots of them"? Like 18 out of the 20 in the pack?

Funny because by the way it is publicized, one would think that only the Catholic Church

The organisation you mention is perhaps unique in that it claims to be absolutely good, always right and doing the work of an all-seeing, all-knowing invisible entity.

Teachers, as far as I know, do not claim to be acting on behalf of the divine.

Life / There is still no option to recycle in Warsaw! [18]

If it's placed carefully next to the bins, they're usually OK. The bigger the complex the better - especially the kind of place where you see people going through the bins (not as scuzzy as it first looks).

Life / There is still no option to recycle in Warsaw! [18]

If you live in an apartment building and put it next to the bins (or just next to the communal bins for any block of flats) someone will take it away and repair/recycle/cannibalise it for spare parts within a day.

News / Poland to (temporarily) restore internal Schengen borders [15]

Kostrzyn train stations

I've seen guards walking alond the platform there.

Road checks don't worry me, but I either fly or go by train Warsaw/Berlin at least monthly and much prefer it without controls.

I suspect they'll be looking mostly for potential protestors.

The big difference is, most of these kids seem to have very good jobs now,

Would you deny an able person a good job?

anti right, anti Church

So only people who share your views should broadcast?

Nobody forces you to watch that ststion.

This is nepotism, which aims to keep power in the hands of one clan.

No 'clan', just some people doing better in life than others and educating their kids as well as they can. Happens the world over regardless of how they vote.

Life / Where to buy a clothes dryer in Poland? [16]

Does anyone have a clothes dryer?

Even thousands do.

Where did you get it (imported or found local?)

An electrical shop. Do people import them? Why? Poland isn't a desert.

how do you run it (LPG, electric?)

Nowadays, Bobbystand, home appliances run on electricity. Safer than gas and less hassle than clockwork.

and how much did/does it cost you?

The same as dryers the world over.

It's part of Polish reality. People took part in the life of their country. That does not reflect on their children or grandchildren and people here do not care. However much that may rile some person half the world away with not much connection to Poland.

Life / Phone callers doing surveys asking what equipment you have in Poland [7]

Hope so!

Seriously, you have to be careful. I used to work for BT mobile phones donkey's years ago (when carphones were for the very rich and had to be connected via an operator) and a guy use to phone our office. If a lady answered, he used to say he was a gynaecologist doing a survey and asked questions. Apparently you could hear the station announcer in the background.

News / Poland to (temporarily) restore internal Schengen borders [15]

Agreed.

The real issue is why they're buggering about with Schengen. At Okecie most of the gates are the Schengen side of the barrier - what are they going to do, put up a whole new set of passport booths or just use the non-Schengen bit???

If so, expect delays and crowds,

News / Poland to (temporarily) restore internal Schengen borders [15]

So, Poland must be Eastern Europe if Poland's own govt website says so in its own text. I thought PL was central Europe as so many Poles insist.

A bit of both really. Central European in economy and religion, Eastern European in food, drink, culture, politics. In architecture, language and agriculture, a bit of both. There are threads on this.

Whoever said that the government of Poland is prone to over-react?

Very bad news here. It means they must be expecting something to happen. A few years ago they closed a couple of crossings during Hansa Day as pure sabre-rattling from the ducks' government. If they're doing this now, there must be a very specific reason.

Life / Is 10500 monthly is enough for a family to live in Warsaw Poland [136]

I will be expecting around 10.5K of monthly salary, after all tax deduction. Also was wondering if i could at least save half of my salary

If you're careful, you can live well on 5k. Plenty in Warsaw live on much less than that and 5k net would be considered a decent salary for a family man. The average in Warsaw is about 6k gross and the median much less.

Just as in previous years, Warsaw has been the leading payroll among Polish cities. The average wage in the capital amounted to 6 000 PLN gross - according to the National Research Remuneration 2012.

Just like every year, the National Compensation Study 2012 showed that the highest salary received inhabitants of Warsaw . But let's take a look at how the difference between the capital and the rest of the province. In Warsaw, half of the study participants earned between 3 900 PLN to 000 PLN 10 , the median earnings amounted to 6 000 PLN . Data from the region (excluding Warsaw ) data deviate from the capital. Half of the inhabitants of the province earned between 2 500 PLN to 300 PLN 6 , and the median was 3 800 PLN .

Earnings of people from Warsaw greatly overestimated the average salary for the entire province. If we consider the entire region (including Warsaw ) , it turns out that wages half of the respondents ranged from 3 500 PLN to 350 PLN 9 . As you can see , these values were much lower than wages in the capital (10% for those earning least in the interval and 6.5 % for those with the highest earnings in the group).

UK, Ireland / Finding ingredients for traditional British Xmas dinner in Poland? [21]

No idea where to source suet to make them myself

The UK.

Paradoxically there's been a shortage of Beef Suet since Poland joined the EU - it's used industially in Kielbasa even though it isn't used domestically. Not sold retail though except perhaps for Kuchnie Swiata and Marks.

noone else in the house likes them.

You either love them or you hate them. I could eat them every day.

There are recipes for versions without suet though and a Christmas Pudding Ice Cream recipe that was doing the rounds about 20 years ago - should be online somewhere.

UK, Ireland / Finding ingredients for traditional British Xmas dinner in Poland? [21]

Anyone know where I can buy Christmas crackers ??

Marks had them one year - not sure they're a regular thing.

As for parsnips, I'm not fond either. They're ok baked with Parmesan, but then again so is pretty well anything.

Re. the turkey size issue, a few places sell saddle of turkey (goose too, at a price) which is more oven friendly and means you don't have so much to use up. I don't like turkey and can't be bothered with all the goose grease so I just do the biggest chicken I can find.

Genealogy / Niekrasowo, Polesie Voivodeship, Second Polish Republic? [2]

There are a few places with variants of that name, however there's one here: which may or may not fit the bill. It isn't in Polesie, however it is very near:

indexmundi.com/z/?lat=49.2&lon=28.2166667&t=p&r=11720&p=nekrasovo&cc=up&c=ukraine

There's also one in Sumskaya Oblast, a little further away.

This placxe in Belarus maybe also of interest: postalcodesdb.com/postal_code_247031_Nekrasovo_Belarus.html

It's possible that the place you're looking for is a small hamlet or estate that no longer exists.

UK, Ireland / Finding ingredients for traditional British Xmas dinner in Poland? [21]

Any suggestions on where I could find the usual turkey

Any big supermarket. Goose too if you prefer something more traditional.

root veg

They don't really have parsnips (pasternak) at all and most people in PL have never tasted them. There's something (pietruszka) that looks rather like them but tastes very different and is used differently - so if you want them, you'll have to bring them.

Gravy

You're a trained chef and asking about gravy??!? There are packets of something called sos do pieczeni however it's intended for pork and rather bland in line with general tastes in PL. At a pinch, you could use it as a thickener but frankly home-made is just as easy as mucking about with a sachet of something. Skrobia kukurydziana is in every food shop and similar to cornflour - just don't use as much since it's much starchier. I've noticed by the way that Delia Smith's gravy recipe is cropping up on Polish recipe sites at the moment - British food is becoming quite fashionable now.

sausagemeat

No - they have plenty of sausage, however it is very different. There's mięso garmażeryjne in all meat shops - you could add breadcrumbs and spices to it, to make a substitute (I've done this) however it isn't anything like the same. Stuffing isn't used much at all in PL but goes down well when you serve it.

Produce

Depends what you mean. Things like sprouts are easily available.

BTW, Yorkshire puddings always go down very well in PL.

UK, Ireland / English courses in London [26]

I do not think I have ever said I would be the one teaching English, have I?

A relief.

you made me aware of things that I did not take in consideration (for instance I did not think about the home office issue)

20 hours a week if you want non-EU people to pay - and it has to be real - they do check that your registers reflect the attendance.

Almost forgot jon357, isn't that a mistake?

No. It's a typo.

I think that also your English is not that good.

It's perfect - as your brochure should be. The cynicism however set in a while ago.

Maybe you should come to me and I will give you some lessons.

Not I hope in business.

Seriously, many language schools in London (fortunately) closed after the last change in legislation - those that remain tend to have plenty of capital behind them. Sorry to **** on your chips, however 15 years ago, opening a new language school was a good idea. Now, only the bigger ones survive. Even some of those aren't wonderful, but fortunately the power of the internet (especially review sites in the countries paying customers come from) is sinking the last of the skanky ones, one by one. Immigration sweeps by the Home Office are sorting the rest.

Our packages and prices will very flexible

They'll have to be - the competition is huge.

We would be be opened

a minimum of ours

On to One

You'll find that some of the competition are very goodnot only at teaching but also at using English without making such basic errors.

and we will not have a minimum of ours that you have to attend per week.

Given that you'll presumably be charging your customers I'm pleased to hear that. But...

we will not have a minimum of ours that you have to attend per week.

You'll find that the Home Office may have other ideas if you have (and you would have) non-EU customers.

Life / Advice needed on Dental implant in Poland [119]

I've found the dental work I've had done at home in Poland to be absolutely first class. Then again, a friend who's a dentist does it all and doesn't charge me anything. This person is also a well-established dentist that is busy enough not to need to get involved with 'medical tourism' people coming from the UK etc and in any case doesn't speak English.

If you're thinking of coming to PL for dental work or other medical procedures, be careful - it isn't unusual in Poland for doctors and dentists to suggest billable treatment that you don't really need - especially if they are unlikely to see the patient again. I'd be very careful of things o n the internet too, like the two posts which preceed yours - they just don't ring true.
