News / Skins vs anarchists in Warsaw [93]

Just because someone has a shaved head and looks tough doesn't mean they're neo-nazis.

The flags and salutes are a bit of a clue.

Life / Why are Polish people so obsessed with race? [160]

So what? The guy is obviously a monkey if he doesn't understand the concept of clothes

That or he has different tastes in fashion to you.

By the way, the thing with the trousers is very popular in Poland, not that you'd know that. I invite you to Warsaw one day to see.

Life / Why are Polish people so obsessed with race? [160]

Says the guy whose probably met a hand full of non Whites in his entire life.

That's quite funny. When I worked in Africa I didn't see a white face from one month to the next, right now I'm sitting in a country where most people are very far from being white-skinned and by the way I'm from one of the most multicultural places in Europe.

People aren't born racist. Racism is based mostly on personal experience.

People aren't born racist. It comes from insecurity, unhappiness with oneself and fear of life.

As in the only black guy in my class always wears shorts/pants around his knees forcing every single other individual to see what underwear he's wearing that day.

So what? Does the fashion habits of others upset you often?

By the way, what sort of class are you attending?

Travel / Ryanair cut charges. Poles to take advantage? [20]

There's sometimes competition for the best stands with certain airlines getting priority. It can be a hassle for the airline with the tight turnaround that low-cost airlines often have. They've to get people off, clean the plane, do the statutory checks of each seat and get people boarded in remarkably little time.

Even if they use a bus though, with priority boarding you still don't get hemmed in by queues (and on Poland flights they always queue as if the plane will go without them) and do get a seat on the bus. Getting off the bus last is no problem if you've got a reserved seat at the front on arrival, just stay near the bus door.

It doesn't sound much, but the stress of flying increases when you do it a lot and every little bit helps to reduce that.

It is thread about race not Poland.

You said:

in this country?

The man is simply projecting his sexual insecurities onto blacks.

I my experience, what they say is very true.

What is there to challenge or even discuss?

There's nothing to say at all, is there? Racism is all about insecurity.

Travel / Ryanair cut charges. Poles to take advantage? [20]

I've seen this too. People who paid for priority were first on the bus, but last to get on the plane.

At Okecie and Manchester there's no bus, you walk to and from the plane.

I've used it and found it a lot quicker. Useful if you've got a train to catch as soon a you arrive.

but alas almost always near some screaming child that gobs in my hair

Karma will get them back when they're older.

Seriously, I've only used Ryanair twice and none of the horror stories I'd heard came true. I was expecting them to measure handluggage etc but they didn't. And it isn't any hardship to walk to the plane. Plus their lounge at Stanstead is as good as any UK one from a normal airline. And of course they're cheap as chips.

They don't miss a trick, do they.

They're also allowing reserved seats for GBP5 from Feb

This they've always had - you can sit near the front for a few quid and get priority boarding - useful if you need a fast getaway.

Travel / Getting from Krakow to Warsaw [99]

LOT is actually a good suggestion - their prices can seem unpredictable but there are occasional bargains on domestic routes. As for TLK- it's cheap however I'm fond of intercity, especially the dining car.

Trwam did show the burning rainbow and for a moment I thought that it was a legitimate part of some ceremony!!

I switched over to TVN,

Which do you think is more likely to be biased?

some of the coverage of the march

Which of the two marches? The traditional one or th eright-wing one?

Well, I watched TV Trwam

An odd choice. Most people under 80 couldn't find it on their cable TV. Generally there's enough diversity of opinion among the other news outlets to make a fringe broadcaster, criticised by both state and church an eccentric choice. But each to his own.

So, I am very disturbed and disappointed if the peaceful looking marchers that I saw were neo-Ns or anything like that

Everyone is disturbed and disappointed - which is why there is such a groundswell of opinion about preventing this as well as genuine outrage at the fascists behaviour.

However, the right to peacefully protest and march against a government they disagree with is their democratic right, and they should not be blamed if idiots hijacked it and committed arson etc. Such can happen anywher

Nothing peaceful about molotow cocktails, attacking embassies, ripping up paving stones and burning public art. And this was not 'hijacked' - there were two marches, one a parade and no political connection and the other a riot which was carefully planned.

Did the non-uniformed police attack the uniformed police again, like last year?

A daft thing to say. Total mischief on your part, though sadly not unusual here.

Just interested.

I doubt that.

so how do you translate Prawica

Nutters. Know any?

The march can't be banned, because that would be unconstitutional or sth?

Lech Kaczynski when he was President of Warsaw banned a march, unconstitutional or not, and all such marches must first be given permission from the city.

How? I'm part of that moderate and normal majority and I don't see this being dealt with effectively.

Hold your horses - it only happened 2 days ago. So no surprise that you 'don't see this being dealt with'.

I'm f.... angry. This should not be tolerated.

Agreed.

Real Estate / Residential property sale in Warsaw - worth selling now? [4]

Look on domiporta.pl for flats in the same street and see what the prices are. Bear in mind that the asking price is usually much higher than the actual value,

Central Walsal

Assuming you do mean Warsaw, that is ;-)

Just out of interest, why did the rainbow become their target, then?

Because itàs a thing of beauty.

I thought it was because they were anti gay rights

Theyàre against all rights except their own. A bunch of very unhappy individuals.

Ah, so just decoration?

An art installation.

the rainbow is a gay symbol has been for a long time, although not solely of course.

The rainbow is used worldwide as a symbol for the gay movement.

No. you're confusing it with the rainbow flag - a different thing. Though I'd be very happy to see a large rainbow flag there instead - that would annoy the knuckle-draggers even more.

Weren't the vast majority of marchers peaceful, just protesting about their standard of living or something like that?

No. They do it yearly to commemorate when Poland was given independence, however the hooligans have started attending to cause a scrap.

the rainbows which from what I can gather were put there as some statement of the acknowledgement of gay rights or similar.

Not according to the artist or the city council who organised it. Though even if it was, then so what?

You'll be pleased to know that the flowers have been replaced already.

And the pseudopatriots have upset people cleverer and better resourced than themselves - and most importantly with the law on their side. The moderate and normal majority will deal with it very effectively.

Life / Living in Poland since 2010 and I still don't have ID. Advice needed please. [50]

her father is Polish in 2009 he had to go to the polish embassy in London to be presented with the Siberian Cross for his time in the Russian work camps and his medals for Arnham. You try telling a proud soldier he is not Polish.Th

Thousands of people round the world are in similar situations involving various countries - this isn't just a Poland thing. Perhaps he revoked his citizenship or didn't keep in contact with the Polish Embassy in the UK - and this is the problem. Your wife should really have sorted out her own citizenship before you bought farmland. Any competent lawyer should have told you this. It is rather daft to do something you aren't legally entitled to and then complain afterwards that the regulations don't suit you and you think they are wrong. Caveat emptor lex.

The best solution is to buy something that you can legally buy or (if you have the time) wait a couple of years until the regulations time out.

News / Emigration from Poland (2.1m Poles are living abroad, most within Europe) [37]

Would you deduce from that: England has a difficult time governing itself? There appears to be a lack of civic responsibility?

Not really, Pol, since it was a one off rather than a (worsening) annual event. Members of the public helped to diffuse it and all perpetrators (including those who sat at computers encouraged/glorified it) were tracked down and received jail sentences. The rabble in Warsaw do it every year and people cower from actually doing anytrhing about it. The discredited Jaroslaw Kaczynski even appealed openly to hooligans to support his 'values'.

Poland has a difficult time governing itself. There appears to be a lack of civic responsibility.

There's a sadly low level of social engagement and people willing to volunteer their time to help others.

badly educated people living in villages, or for people who studied crap degrees without having any sort of connections

'Masters' degrees in International Relations advertised on the bus. There are already too many diplomats without questionable 'universities' leading people on.

tar the whole march with the violent thugs brush.

No need to tar anything - that's exactly what it's become.

Obviously a preplanned tactic

I doubt it.

What were the marchers doing anywhere near the squat in the first place?

It isn't as if it's on a main road. They went there to make trouble.

Przychodnia squat is a fun place to hang out tho.

It reminds me a bit of the place that used to be on Towarowa, only more political.

Here's hoping that they put rainbows in every Polish village, town and city from now on.

That's a lot to hope for. They're too dumb to realise that the city won't lose face (or get bad publicity) and not repair the damage every time.

Certainly one side or the other. And they burnt the installation in pl. Zbawicela again apparently. Evidently they can't handle symbols of hope.

potrays it as people from independence march attack cultural community center haha.

It wouldn't be the first time. They put the windows through on Nowy Wyspanialy Swiat when it was still there.

Some of the pictures in the media look busy as they are generally wont to do, but it seems the police dealt with it all very well for a change. Even the normal bad behaviour on Belwederska was contained and no TVN news vans torched by pseudopatriots this time.

Love / Massive problems with Polish mother-in-law [36]

haha no but it prob makes them feel better about not knowing polish.

1. Who do you think doesn't 'know Polish'?
2. How do you think your pearls of wisdom help the OP.

It looks like she has the mother-in-law from hell. Not a great situation to deal with.

Love / Massive problems with Polish mother-in-law [36]

Are you kidding me? She left her husband and now everybody around her needs to pay for her trips?? You must be joking?

This lady sounds an absolute tyrant.

However it seems she's an effective tyrant, good at what she does. This means, as I said, that there's no room for compromise. You need to put distance between you and sadly, cut her off and keep it that way for a while. It'll be hard on your husband and you'll need to be very sensitive and gentle.

Are you kidding me?

Probably he is - that particular poster is apparently a teenager who hasn't yet had a relationship. Not the best person to give advice and doesn't necessarily mean well.

Love / Massive problems with Polish mother-in-law [36]

The OP needs to ignore wishy-washy thoughts of good feeling and simply cut the evil cow out of her life.

Spot on.

Polish people by nature do not understand subtlety, but understand and respect the fist.

It certainly doesn't seem this woman's strong point.

take a very firm line with her.

If the situation's escalated this far; negotiating isn't going to change anything.
