Love / Scottish & Polish relationships [229]

True enough, becksi. The party lasted long enough but my wife's family are not drinkers so that cut it short.

Thanks, M-G.

Thanks folks :) Yeah, we agreed to, um, discharge the tensions of the day. Well, I did vow to make the marriage agreeable and happy after all ;) ;)

Not at all, I had nothing but had some Nemiroff today. I was in amongst non-drinkers so I managed half the bottle. 250mls to myself, so 10 British shot measures. Plenty of food to wash it down with, though. A veritable feast it was. A triumph for Scottish & Polish relations. Her dad was supportive as he saw I was tired and waivering a little at the ceremony itself. It passed quickly.

News / Poland's Organized Crime [58]

Not quite but you need to go into Wołomin and Pruszków and tell them that. Some are and you can see that.

Love / Are all Polish men Psychos? [111]

Some get quite touchy when they hear English. I remember a guy got quite angry behind me because our table was speaking English. He started getting aggressive so I told him he'd better sit down or he'd be escorted off the premises sharply. I knew the bouncers of the place and they'd've pitched him out quickly. I just looked at him square in the eye and he backed down.

A jock in a frock, LOL. I wish I had some national attire with me but the ceremony is just too short.

I think you'd get on with some Polish guys here, Justy. Why don't you get on with many of them here?

News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

I agree, Seanny. As long as there is relative equality, there should be no complaints. The old 'level playing field' ploy. Many Poles say that they are firmly against immigration in general. That's hardly a fair position, considering the 1.5 million or so that went to the UK and illegally to America.

Love / Men and Women from Eastern Poland [37]

There is a harshness to some people from Eastern Poland but I also see it here in industrial SW Poland. Only 1 in 10 thank you for holding the door open for them, old people scowl at you even though you apologise for clipping them by accident and there is an incredible rudeness in shops where people barely acknowledge one another.

In Scotland, it's a more communal affair and there is more openness generally. Eastern Poles have some ugly towns and can be quite poor. That makes them hard-nosed brutes but many are just steely and rugged.

Do you know what a Scotsman wears under his kilt, pgtx? :)

Love / Scottish & Polish relationships [229]

I wonder how those cooperation societies are getting on in Scotland. I know my friend from school has become close with a Polish woman and he finds it a pleasant assignment to strike a positive chord.

Language / 'MOZNA' - When is this used? [27]

I was keeping it simple. Can I can be used in all the cases you said, cinek. I put it in a nutshell.

Love / Are Polish girls forced to marry by their parents? [33]

Maybe there is a strong expectation like there is in Japan. 30 seems to be the age where, if they are not married, their families may look unfavourably upon that. My friend Yoko was 31 and her parents frowned upon her for not being married. She is an obasan (grandmother) in Japanese eyes. Be thankful that Poland does have an arranged marriage culture like Japan has.

There will always be pressure from the social unit known as the family. We also have to see where they are coming from and try and accept that the pressure is a little stronger here. Also, it's not like we are not pressured back home either (if you are a Brit).

Language / 'MOZNA' - When is this used? [27]

Można is impersonal and means 'can I?' or 'may I?'. You can say 'moge?' which is more personal.

Sth like 'can one take it?' Vs 'can I take it?'. Take is used by way of example.

I've found them to be interchangeable although the resident Polish experts may think differently.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Yeah, they are the pick of the bunch so far, RL. The cheddar is as good as what I bought in Tesco. They have a good Scottish one there.

Sarsons is top quality. I didn't buy the Hatherwoods Malt Vinegar as I don't use vinegar that often. The cheapo Tesco one will do me. My fiancee generally uses it to clean the kettle :)

I was gonna get the waffles but there would've been no space. Ah well, the deal is til the end of the week so I still have time.

The sweet pickle is really good, as is the cheddar. I bought the picallili, it's alright. I was never a huge fan of it. I haven't eaten the fish n chips but it's basically all your daily calories right there in a oner. I'll try the scampi soon, I bought 8 bags at 13PLN a throw. The S&V sticks are superb!

Overall, I'm really impressed.
