Life / Looking to immigrate to Europe. How is life in Poland? [116]

The living conditions are great? Many fellow Poles would disagree with you. Prices are high and salaries are lowish.

Capital? It depends on the business but some of the set-up capital required might prohibit some.

Constant progress? One economist says one thing and the next one says another. There's too many shades of grey for you to say that.

Roads and railways, LOL. Tusk has put many major projects off until 2014 as he said he couldn't find the required capital. Another inaccuracy, polmed.

Housing market fairly affordable? Are you kidding me? It is way beyond the means of quite a few families here. It's NOT cheap here at all.

Economic stability? Is that why the PLN is struggling now? Is that why Poland would have a heck of a problem if 900,000 Poles came home?

PiS could have used you in their election campaign, polonthemeds. Full of half truths and leaflet style PR.

News / Poland Elections oct 2011/your feed back about RP Janusz Palikot? Poland is changing! [106]

Ah, so you spent it on a new cloak? ;)

Palikot, despite being a political clown in ways, had some good things to say in the interview I posted. I just question his commitment to his ideals but you can say the same about many politicians. A modernist is what is needed here. One with the savvy to resist the huge influence of the church. Give people their religious tools but don't let money play a major part in it.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

I think many of my students came up with better policies and plans for the future than the main political parties did. PO seemed to play down the roads situation rather well. Foreigners will be using Polish roads for EURO 2012 and Tusk would have down everyone a favour by expediting the repairwork.

Let's see Tusk mingle with the people outwith election time. Otherwise he will just be taken as false. He should play some footie in amongst some locals.

JK needs to move along. Last chance saloon was an early 'sympathy election' after his twin brother died. He is a smart man but just not so widely trusted amongst the Polish electorate.

So why all this talk of money money money regarding the RCC? I look around, I see churches. I have freedom of belief. What else is there? The RCC is super wealthy and you have to ask yourself why. Earning off of belief is not the way and they should be made to dip as deep into their coffers as they can.

Let's see if people really know what they were voting for.

My question to resident Poles is:

Please name the 5 core values of each major party, i.e PO, PiS and SLD. Oh, has Kommie died? I never hear of the man. The Silent President

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

I'm not a fan of Tusk either. Maybe they are informed in US Polonia but how many of them really 'lived it' under PiS? PiS value accountability in key areas and I like that about them.

I meant that they are not wholly familiar with PiS due to being based in pre-crisis America. My point was that they received only slogans and soundbites but didn't live under the regime, good or bad.

I think you are right, My Mom. Besides, politicians should only serve as a minor watchdog on the church. They should ensure that the law is upheld but not much beyond that. Gay rights are dealt with by EU Law which automatically supercedes Polish domestic law, see Costa VS ENEL 1964. It's not even strictly Palikot's job to ensure their observance, the police should be doing that. He's an idiot seeking out a role which he'll probably never have. PO are in power and that's the end of story for now.

He is a populist who represents the face of a change that he'd like to see, not one that is actually happening to any significant extent. The idiocy of saying that Poland is changing because 'one man and his dildo' champions certain causes is staggering. Without his wealth, he'd be an absolute nobody. Opinions are like arses in that everyone has one. His view is no better or worse than the average Pole's.

Celebrities such as Palikot cheapen the whole process. Like Polish women who hibernate in winter and come out to play in summer, this circus clown would be well advised to push his head into the sand and shove his dildo where the sun don't shine. Just like Pudzianowski brings shame to MMA through not working hard enough, Palikot does the same.

I guess US Polonia were bombarded by PiS slogans and didn't live here when they were in power.

Genealogy / Why Polish aren't white?? [272]

People skin's colour is what it is because God or some other force made it that way. Can't we just leave it at that? It's not like we choose it.

I have seen them too but they are very much in the minority and I wouldn't say there are "many".

The thread is an obvious provocation.

News / Tusk wants to privatize PKP Cargo. [38]

Well, he has had 4 years to sink Poland and he hasn't done so. My suspicion a couple of years back was that he was going to sell Poland out to the highest bidder but he hasn't done that so far.

Some healthy advice, Anandi. Don't form too many preconceptions. Yes, many Poles are really helpful as I have experienced on multiple occasions. However, don't count on it. Some old folk will act like you are not even there. Try making friends first.

There are scammers for sure but I've been lucky so far. I had a guy fit up 4 doors recently and he had the chance of getting an extra 20% out of me in the event of complications met while trying to do his job. Arguably, he had a case as some moron didn't study how to get evenness on the walls throughout the flat. They had to use their know-how to get round the problem but he didn't ask for any extra money. He was clearly competent and we might hire him to do the windows when the right time comes round.

I'm sure WB would back me up on the following, Anandi. Do yourself a huge favour and get a Polish person to help you enter into big contracts. Otherwise you may get fleeced. My Polish, in a functional sense, is pretty fluent but some technical terms are beyond my grasp. My wife has been invaluable. Poles also know how to haggle. I know through having been in some market cultures, e.g Thailand, but it's a different ballgame when it comes to contractual negotiations.
