USA, Canada / Can Polish citizens with US greencard travel to Canada? [63]

the problem with the original AZ law was that it allowed the police to stop people for "looking" illegal. how does an illegal person look like? that is why the AZ governess signed the augmented law rather quickly where status ID could only be asked if there was some other violation first..

USA, Canada / Can Polish citizens with US greencard travel to Canada? [63]

i would argue that we do.

yeah but it's not the same thing as it is in the usa.. here it's like another ID

...or the equivalent.

just an ID (dokument obywatelski or something)

Correct, however an actual green card (or is it pink card :) never expires [providing you follow the INS guidelines]. It's simply the document that expires just like your driver's license or your passport.

Not so with the conditional green card. Unless you've had your interview and passed it your conditional green card will expire (unless extended due to the INS's inefficiencies, etc.). So that's what I meant.

never.. well, that could probably be argued as one has to reapply and INS (or Homeland Security now) could deny it, if they felt like it.. it's not like a DL where you just pay a fee and get another copy...

Passport is for entering back into the US. Canadians simply want to know who you are and to make sure you'll be able to get back into the US.

yeah i know but technically then you really don't need a visa to Canada.

Life / Is grumbling a Polish attribute? [24]

you might also need a birth certificate

we don't have such document in PL..

but it has an expiration date.

all green cards have expiration dates now..

If you live in the US I'd imagine you should be able to renew at the Polish Consulate.

correct

Also - based on reply #22 I guess you might need a visa too.

"...Poland (holders of non-biometric passports only)..."

this is a bit puzzling to me as you can just show them your green card when entering Canada and that is all you need.. however, these days, they may ask you for the passport.. not sure.. last time i crossed the border was before the passport requirement and i just used my DL both ways.

Those titles are earned where I come from and I'm not into being nice to those that don't merit it.

this may be one of the biggest differences between the east and the west.. and maybe one of my biggest pet peeves... respect is always forwarded not earned.. this is probably why the westerners so often come across as rude... one ought to have basic respect for their fellows from the start.. earning it makes no sense and is illogical.

Genealogy / Travel and migration in late 19th - early 20th centuries [9]

Did people move around that much?

that is strange indeed.. if anything, people moved in the other direction but then you never know as anything is possible.. maybe they had some family over there and his folks died or something so he had to move that far away...

Was this migration encouraged by the government?

i don't know about encouraged but the russians forced a lot of people to move as they were russifying a lot of the areas under their control thus maybe you grandpa's people said "the hell with this" and moved on to usa.

Life / Good place to live in Poland (if you want to move on)? [66]

In general, Central and Eastern Europe is very nice; you won't notice this being in the US or Canada...

rubbish.. both USA and CAN have more natural beauty then Poland and of course they have way more room.

please where is the best place to live in the Poland

surely depends on what you like.. the seaside is nice so are the mountains but if you don't like either, the middle has a lot of nice places to offer.

Grumbling, complaining, low self-esteem

grumbling or complaining surely doesn't mean low self esteem.. not at all.. however, poles do love to moan and groan for some reason.. more then others, i might add.

<Grumble>

lol

we like melancholy songs

did Chopin even write one happy tune?

a concern for self esteem ... in US educational system.

i don't really see it in education so much but definitely in sports for the little tikes where everyone is a winner.. give me a break

The Power of Positive Thinking

there is definitely truth to that one.

Genealogy / ARE THERE ANY RECORDS SHOWING IMMIGRANTS LEAVING USA BEGINNING 20THC [9]

(thinks the percentage of ppl who went back to Europe is amazingly small)

correct.. ship manifests may be the only thing unless they gave up their us citizenship then there would be records but i have no idea where one could find that info.

they left the shythole that was Europe back in the day for a better life in the US.

btw. usa was a pretty bad shythole back then too.

Language / Ski Or Ska? - Polish surname endings [44]

Why don't you get it Americanized to -sky

Do last names ending in sky denote jewish heritage , or are there Polish last names ending in sky?

not jewish but russian or possibly slovak or czech.

Incidentally - I can't say for certain, but aren't Polish ID cards containing proper letters?

polish ones, for sure..

Language / Ski Or Ska? - Polish surname endings [44]

If I marry a man with the -ski ending in his name, do I follow in the -ski name or do I become a -ska? Is there a difference in what happens depending on whether I live here in the states or in Poland?!

it is completely up to you and your hubby.. both my mom and my sis are -ska here in the usa.

News / Jarosław Kaczyński sharing his words with Russians! [57]

I am British, and prepared to have ill will against my own (war time) government for ridicule, as to Dresden, or for sinking the General Belgrano in the Falklands conflict, so it's not as if I'm biased as to which act was the most horrific. We now know what happened at Katyn - What do you and the Poles who cant move on want? Photographs?

i'm going to quote your whole post so you can reread it and see why that is still in the poor taste as well as you not making much sense.. you contradict yourself and thus seem clueless.. read what you posted one more time, then maybe think about it some.. then maybe you will figure out why you come across as out to lunch.

History / "Europa" - An article about recent history of Poland [15]

I could get into the article and start dismembering it but its not worth it,

of course it should be` worth it if you find it all to be hogwash.. otherwise you're just farting in the wind.

News / Jarosław Kaczyński sharing his words with Russians! [57]

The Germans let sleeping dogs lie in general terms, an admirable quality that some Poles would do well to copy.

completely different circumstance.. i find it extremely in poor taste that you'd even make that comparison.
