Study / What do Poles think of a foreign person who tries to learn Polish [47]

....at worst, at best, admirably ambitious:-)

All the Poles whom I met who wanted to correspond in English rather than Polish, came out with stuff like "Thank from mountain!" instead of "Thank you in advance!", etc

Often their "intermediate" English was as bad as my beginning Polish, only because they're Europeans with "British-style" teachers, their flatulence had no odor, so to speakLOL

Poles typically appreciate any non-Slav willing to take the mighty plunge and learn their language!

In comparison with the Germans or the French, the Poles are far less likely in my experience to laugh at or tease
a foreigner who speaks Polish, albeit with a decided foreign accent:-) One reason is because most Poles know they themselves
often speak with an awful accent when pronouncing English and so are thankful for someone who speaks Polish about as
badly as the Poles usually speak English.

Germans speakers can frequently hide behind a fake-sounding British English pronunciation to mask their legion inadequacies LOL

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

Auschwitz-Birkenau, Dachau, Priebke's massacre of over two-hundred innocent Roman civilians, the barbarities perpetrated on local citizenry, above all Jews, by the Einsatzgruppen throughout Eastern Europe were lies??

Those and similar atrocities were not committed by Russians or by Poles, but by Germans ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!!!
Furthermore, the American Jewish Congress could by no stretch of the imagination be termed "liberal left:-)

Law / Obtaining residence permit in Poland by setting up a company or via permit from another EU country [13]

It takes much more than merely correctly stamped paperwork to "become" a German citizen! Becoming any nationality other than one's own, means thinking, indeed, feeling, as in that culture. If not, then one's merely a duck out of water and the neighbors won't let you forget it either:-)

A person begins to take on those charactaristics of the country of which they are becoming naturalized...or else.

Work / Work in academia in Poland? [3]

Check out the electronic message board of any ranking German university and perhaps it will list what you're looking for.

Life / Poles against gay marriages. Really? [120]

"Is homosexuality a congenital disease", as some have suggested?

No more or no less than Nazism, Communism as well as nearly a dozen or so other "-isms" out there!
All depends on whom you ask:-)

@Intermarium.

Many Poles here undoubtedly have a little help from GoogleTranslate, lest we credit many (perhaps not all, like Ziemowit) with praise not entirely deserved:-)

By the way, one wonders how a changing of the guard in the good ol' FRG come 2020 will change that country's views on the entire gay issue. I understand from the German press that a possible run by Annagret Kram Karrenbauer for chancellor would simply be "Merkel Lite" aka SPD on steroids.

Care to comment?

They are creatures of the same G-d as you or I, like it or not.
Even "sinners" are human:-)

@Rich,
Send me a snapshot of her and I'll take it under advisement!

Gays don't demand "special" treatment, Ironside, at least as far as I've observed; they simply want EQUAL treatment and that's a big difference from what you said:-)

I agree in principle, pawian!

The problem is of course that all people are mired in their ideologies which sometimes prevent them from thinking outside the box or seeing beyong their petty prejudices.

My issue with gayness is scarcely religious, after all, G-d loves each of us, as much as it is social.

By that definition, marriage between humans and animals isn't possible either, as there's obviously zero legal or historical precedent for sameLOL

Let's avoid trying to instruct other nations on what they "should" or "shouldn't" do! It's a losing battle. Easy to be ethnocentric, tough to understand certain attitudes based on the lessons of the past.

Thus far, Poland has never tried to impose her views on her neighbors, and it's not likely she's going to either,
having learned the lessons of history:-)

Poland remains an arch-conservative society, a culture in which the Catholic Church alone pulled that country through the worst of times, it was the glue which held the nation together, similar in a way to the German language for Germany.

Homosexuality threatens to "unglue" Poland, and people simply aren't going to stand for it!
Open-minded as I try to be here at home, I for one can't really blame them.

News / Ultra nationalist protest at death camp in Poland - serious mistake? [146]

In a recent SPIEGEL, there was an interview with the current "hot" star of AfD, Bjoern Hoecke, entitled appropriately "The Lone Wolf" ("Waldgaenger"), in which he goes chuntering on about the usual pet beefs of his party, the declining birthrate of white Germans vs. Turks, Syrians, Arabs, Nigerians etc..., in his view "over"-emphasis on the Holocaust in school, a tendency he sees to "deifying" all Jews as nearly living saints, allegedly looking to garner sympathy and contiuously demonize the German people on into eternity etc..

As I kept reading, I realized that there must be a reason why all the stops of decency, forbearance, empathy have been pulled out, now reaching true fever pitch in such raw viciousness. And I came to the conclusion that post-War Germany in particular, from the '50's on well into the Adenauer Era, had things too soft, too easy, and, as throughout much of the world, the younger generation of Germans rather expected things to be handed them and considered themselves forever grateful NOT to have gone through the Truemmerjahre as their parents or grandparent had to, drastic food shortages, folks feeding themselves from rubbish bins, constant uncertaintly, never any time "off" from the horrors of their daily grind and so forth. They've grown tired of history lessons, "good things come to those who wait"- type thinking, and an onslaught of the liberal Pollyanna.

Unless we stop to reflect on certain earlier values, we're all doomed to self-destruct!

Monopoly on Jewish victimhood.

Hmmm, sure doesn't sound too coherent to me. Are you somehow intimating that the Jews CHOSE to become victims??
Guess all my older posts on the history of Catholicism went over you like a wave.

Time ya fell off yer surfboard and had some sense knocked into yer head, dirk!!

If the truth isn't in the eye of the beholder, by that definition, anyone who denies the uniqueness of the Holocaust is incapable of seeing the truth, am I right so far?

Good. Then there's no reason for anybody, to marginalize the Holocaust as a singular watershed in history.

Glad we finally agree on something.
