History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

Just as Germany accepts the Oder-Neisse line as its present western border, the people of Poland should accept its present Bug border with the eastern neighbours.

That was my point, Ziemowit. Neither Poland nor Germany should come up with territorial claims that are based on some historic borders from a hundred or a thousand years ago (doesn't matter). Both countries and their people should accept the status quo and move on, and they have come a long way already. Why risk that achievement?

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

Germany actually stole the land

Especially the "Recovered Territories", right? Any dubious Polish claim to some historic areas from a thousand years ago is legit, while any German claim is not? How about the current borders are accepted by both sides and any discussion about moving them again is dangerous BS?

Technically accurate

Nope. If you go back long enough, there was no concept of "stealing" someone's territory. You got invaded, annihilated, crushed ... and that was that. Invade first, don't ask questions later, so to say.

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

But Hispanics constitute the No. 1 non-English-speaking minority in the USA

Soon to be majority. Then it's "Press 1 for Spanish, press 2 for English". Who knows, maybe it will be "Press 1 for Polish, press 2 for English" in the UK one day... :)

Life / Immigration Free Poland is Not Being Racist [194]

Poland sees the Black disaster in America and wants no part of it.

Who are you kidding? Most Poles and other Europeans have no clue about what is really going on in black neighborhoods in the USA (you have to live here to understand), just as you have no idea of what is going on in Poland or Europe in general.

UK, Ireland / Polish Integration in Irish Society [4]

What I find quite significant is the ones who moved back to Poland, found that they had changed

Why are you surprised? Travelling and/or living in another country for an extended period of time almost always changes people. At some point you have to open your mind and adapt; otherwise you will be very lonely abroad or end up in a ghetto.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

The bigger problem is integration. For example the term African-American.

Well, why are whites called "Caucasian" here?

eternal imprisonment may be the only "punishment" for both the former perpetrators as well as, regrettably, their offspring

Careful! That would imply that there is someone out there who has a keen interest in punishing the offspring of the perpetrators even generations after the crime. You can't hold a young white American responsible for slavery, and you also cannot blame a young German or Austrian for something that happened 70+ years ago. There is no collective guilt.

News / An article: NATO is the American occupation of Poland and Europe, by Mateusz Piskorski [233]

Putin can`t have Poland and so he won`t even try, in normal circumstances.

What makes you so sure? Putin is old school KGB and as such he's busy reestablishing the USSR (under a different name) and its sphere of influence. Give him the opportunity to get Poland back under his control, and he will seize it.

News / An article: NATO is the American occupation of Poland and Europe, by Mateusz Piskorski [233]

NATO to go out of Poland. As soon as possible.

...and hand over Poland to Putin. That's what you want?

you're still saying "Oh no no no the Nazi Germans didn't start "Polish jokes"

Prove to me that the Nazis were the first ones who ever cracked a joke about Polish people. I know that you can't, and neither can nationalistic rags like the Polish American Journal. Ethnic jokes are not limited to Poles; all ethnicities are/were a target at some point in time. So why all this whinging from the PolAms?

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

However when it comes to xenophobia Poland is one of these places that scores very low in that regard. That is a fact.

Then show us your "facts", Iron. Compared to other European nations, Poland has a very low number of foreigners living in the country (only Romania has less). Hence, the number of hate crimes related to xenophobia or raciscm is also comparatively low. Does that mean that Poles are less xenophobic than the rest? No, of course not. Import a few million Muslims from the Levante and the Middle East who do not integrate, and then we'll see how friendly the Poles really are...

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Racists sentiments exist in every society and continent in the world.

I totally agree.

Whereas some nations are prone to be naturally more xenophobic, tribal and misogynic due to their history. Its ain't Poland.

Xenophobia is unfortunately very common and Poland is no exception.

Like you feel that because in German and France such and such is happening, it must be so in Poland.

Quick search on Google:

nytimes.com/1991/09/14/world/6-polish-youths-attack-a-warsaw-synagogue.html
articles.latimes.com/1997-02-27/news/mn-33021_1_jewish-community

So explain to me why there wasn't any attacks on refugee centers when there was 86 000 refuges from Chechnya?

That's the total number of Chechen refugees that Poland granted asylum between 1991 and 2015! Nothing compared to what's going on in western Europe at the moment. Most Chechens didn't stay long enough to upset the Polish locals and moved on to greener pastures anyway.

Poland has about eleven refugee centers. In the 90' Poland accepted 86 000 of refugees from Chechnya

I was under the impression that we are talking about the current refugee crisis.

There are about 27 active synagogues in Poland.

Berlin alone has 13 ( jewish-berlin.com/synagogues.php ), Paris and London a lot more. No wonder they are targeted more often.

You are being obnoxious, as usual when it comes to Poland.

Don't be silly, Iron. Do you really believe that Poland is an innocent little paradise where nothing bad will ever happen? There's only one reason why Poland hasn't seen any attacks on refugee centers: there aren't any of the particular kind that had been popping up in the West lately. If you guys would have centers like the Germans or Swedish, I guarantee you they would be attacked as well.

Why is it that synagogues and refugee centres are attacked mainly in the West?

Because Poland does not have any refugee centers and only a few synagogues?

Genealogy / Looking for Albert Sondej born about 1860 in Mazury, Poland sons Jakob and Jan came to America [10]

For Rzeszów and surrounding areas, this was under Austrian rule and you may well see Galicia instead.

This is actually a big advantage as there might still be civil registration records available for the time period starting in 1867. The Russian Empire/USSR only introduced civil registration after the 1918 revolution. Many birth, marriage and death records (independent of religious affiliation) have survived the war and are now available at the relevant state archives in Poland and Austria. Sometimes even online and for free - just google a bit.

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

I don't believe that the Poles were a problem in the first place. The Brits who voted for BREXIT are afraid of uncontrolled immigration of muslims, but Farage and Johnson forgot to mention that most of these are Commonwealth citizens who can enter the U.K. quite easily. The perceived immigration problem won't be solved by leaving the EU. It just hasn't dawned on the Brits yet ...

Hopefully Brexit means that Pakis won't come to Poland.

Why would they? They will all end up in the land of their former colonial master, but Farage and JOhnson forgot to mention that, of course.

History / Poland in WWI [38]

You actually you do see them in Lower Silesia.

You are right, there seem to be a lot more WW1 war memorials left than I thought. I just came across this web site, which lists war memorials in the former "Neumark":

neumark.pl/main.php?kat=pomnikiwojenne&lang=pl

Wonder why the author of that article made such claims.

History / Poland in WWI [38]

Is there any evidence of the Polish communist authorities deliberately destroying WWI monuments and cemeteries?

Somewhere I read about the deliberate destruction of German cemeteries in the "Recovered Territories" right after the war, and also that German inscriptions in churches were removed, but I never heard about the destruction of war memorials. There must be something to it though, because WW1 was a big deal for the Germans of the Weimar Republic as well as Nazi Germany, and I'm very sure that they erected thousands of memorials throughout the country. I remember seeing a ton of them in Bavaria for example, so it seems to be a legit question why you don't see them in what was once Pomeriania, Silesia and East Prussia (or even further back in time: the former provinces of West Prussia and Posen).

Indeed World War I was largely repudiated by postwar Russian and Austrian societies as an imperialist war foisted upon them by the upper classes.

In the end, WW1 was all about global domination and getting rid of competitors. The Treaty of Versailles and ultimately WW2 were the culmination of that school of thought.

History / Poland in WWI [38]

Paulina, I just read the article again. The author is arguing that "Poland's de-Germanization policy following World War II impacted battlefield commemoration". The de-Germanization after WW2 was responsible for the fact that there are hardly any WW1 war memorials left in the area that was called the "Recovered Territories" by the commies. That's at least how I understand the article.

History / Poland in WWI [38]

I don't see what WWI has to do with de-Germanization

Treaty of Versailles rings a bell? Only a fraction of the Germans that had lived there before remained in independent Poland. Read up on the so-called Optantenlisten. Interesting chapter in Polish-German history right after WW1. They even tried to go separate ways on amicable terms.

the EU runs a surplus with the UK, so it has more to lose tradewise, its that simple.

Let's see what happens when British companies and multinational corporations start to shift their production/ services/ headquarters from the U.K. to another EU country.
