Language / Writing time of day and currency amounts - in Poland and in the UK [5]

Already Mickiewicz wrote: "Co Francuz wymyśli, to Polak polubi".

Bo Paryż częstą mody odmianą sie chlubi, a co Francuz wymyśli to Polak polubi.

because 10.15 is still the norm in Poland although the colon (:) is creeping in.

I've just checked the WKD (Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa) brochure with their timetables and it is... the colon (:) which is used as a separator between the hour and the minute. I will check some pre-war railways timetables later on and tell you what it was like before 1939.

Work / Warsaw Poland - stock market investment? [8]

Please share your experiences id love to hear more

The trading platform on the WSE (GPW) has been very modern from its very beginning in the 1990s. Electronic trade was introduced all at once, so the WSE hadn't known any paper trade before that. The trading technology was bought from the stock exchange in Lyon (France).

I have been on the market from the very beginning and witnessed its first greatest bubble burst. The speed at which the giełda was moving upwards before that was more than breath-taking and I experienced it myself when the shares I bought (in major part on leverage) had gone up fourfold (they were probably the best performing stock on the exchange then) in just three months. If you have ever experienced such a raid, you will never forget it and in particular how difficult it is to decide when to quit the market.

Now the Warsaw Stock Exchange is totally different form what it was at that time of its childhood. There are much more companies listed on it, but the bussiness is as uncertain as usual. Are you planning to start investing on the WSE?

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

erman man who tied a noose around his wife's neck and dragged her through the streets tied to the back of their car as their two-year-old son watched

I could hardly call him German. He is Kurdish/Turkish bringing the culture of beating the wife with him into Germany. It is irrelevant he has a German citizenship.

really can't see what Delph has been doing this last week ????

Maybe Delph will come up with a similar story about a Pole dragging his wife through the streets.

Australia / Drug smuggling by Poles into Australia [4]

Does anyone else know of incidents involving Polish men smuggling drugs such as MDMA into Australia?

I haven't heard of any other except for the one you have just described.

So how many drug problems does Australia have altogether? Is it serious for Australia or are their drug problems just on the avarage level. How does Australia cope with their drug problems?

News / Poland Interior Minister awards himself a medal, then refuses to accept it [4]

That is really amusing. The truth behind it that a minister usually approves by signing any documents containing (rather) long lists of people being awarded. This is interesting from the point of view of those who made this list since they should definitely consult the minister before placing his name on it which I expect they did not.

UK, Ireland / Polish smugglers caught and jailed [10]

One can only wonder how many cigarettes were smuggled from Poland to the UK in the last 13 years.

Not many as

CRIME DOES NOT PAY IN THE UK

Most of your comments are insightful and helpful.

Wow, does that mean my comment was not helpful? Maybe it wasn't, but it was undoubtedly insightful.

History / Which countries are Polands friends, which are Polands enemies? [75]

This would be a golden opportunity for a peaceful protest at Chopin

Should that be a peaceful protest against the United States?

asking Trump to lift the visa requirements for the Polish citizens to visit the United States.

You think we should start begging him on our knees for lifting the visa requirements?

UK, Ireland / Polish slave trader in the UK has sentence increased [56]

perhaps you can give us a source to support your claim?

Perhaps they can first give us a source to support the claim of 180,100. The most possible source is their ceiling where the painter painted this number when re-decorating the room. But perhaps it was an amount claimed for the work he had done on the building?

The latest coordinated posts this week by a certain serially-suspended malcontent

Yes, I seem to know whom you may have in mind.

and his obsequious band of Polonophobic provocateurs

There has only been only one (so far!) of this band in this thread.

want to bait and troll by attempting to portray criminality as a Polish trait. It won't work.

This is very well said. May the Christian cross be put on you and may the Sarmatian-Slavic gods guide you for ever!

The key figure used to accuse Poland in this thread is 180,100. How have they arrived at it is a great mystery. It very much looks as if it was taken from the ceiling of that institution which published this statistics. Possibly Harry is the co-author of that figure and that other one of the band helps him diffuse it on the internet saying that the figure is terribly shocking rather than trying to reveal some of the methodology used to work out that mysterious figure.

UK, Ireland / Polish slave trader in the UK has sentence increased [56]

a few months ago there was a case in Ireland of a Polish guy convicted of human trafficking

How would those be counted in the statistics? As people enslaved in Ireland (country of their destination) or as people enslaved in Poland (country of where they came from to Ireland)?

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

Don't get so upset, Crow. The science of genetics hasn't uttered its last word yet. Btw, some time ago I read a dissertation on how some Polish words are strangely related to some old-Iranian words. And it wasn't at all about the common PIE heritage.

UK, Ireland / Polish slave trader in the UK has sentence increased [56]

Coming up with a figure of 180,000 "enslaved" people on these numbers is not very credible....

They came up with a figure of 180,100 "enslaved" people and this is something which makes it far more credible than a mere 180,000..

a difficult situation to analyse because of the hidden nature of it and the fact that so many cases go undetected.

Thus my question remains: how could they estimate or count this figure down to a hundred bearing in mind that the total is nearly 200,000.which is an awful lot? The estimation has been done rather precisely ...

By comparison the UK has only 11,700 people living in modern slavery

The 2016 Global Slavery Index estimates 181,100 people or 0.48% percent of the total population live in conditions of modern slavery in Poland

I wonder what the methodology of it is. In other words, what was the method of counting them. The numbers are rounded off to hundreds and not thousands, so fairly accurate methods should have been employed.

News / Mysterious death of Magdalena Żuk on holiday in Egypt [144]

Unimpressed with that story which had a definite agenda (egypt is safe and poles are racist!)

Agreed. Probably trying to take the attention off the British being racist themselves.

Not a good word, even if the Independent's version is taken at face value it sounds more like accidental death

Agreed. But 'suicide' was it called in this clown's report.

News / Mysterious death of Magdalena Żuk on holiday in Egypt [144]

This article of The Independent seems to provide a fair account of the story. The fake detective Rutkowski has long been known as a clown rather than a detective here, but even he admitted it was a suicide. The fact that he proposed to his girlfriend during a live TV discussion on the Zuk case must have been the climax of the story and a major blow to all the conspiration theorists which may partly explain why the case has suddenly evaporated from the Polish social media. The more surprising is that the PF has picked up on it, but this was a sort of hmm, latency, I should think.

News / Mysterious death of Magdalena Żuk on holiday in Egypt [144]

the official story doesn't make sense on a number of grounds

What's the official story? I haven't come across it yet. The whole affair was abundantly discussed on the internet and then everything has suddently gone quiet. This is amazing that all those internet detectives went quiet on the Polish websites and shortly after that the story has re-emerged on the PolishForums.

travelling to a strange hot country could indeed be just the thing to bring it [mental health problems in young people] on

Tha's an interesting observation, Roz. Although I have never had any mental problems, my body temperature typically increases to about 41 Celsius after I move to Italy or elsewhere in the South of Europe for a holiday and remains such for about a day. The climate may exert a serious impact on the body or on the mind.

Middle aged women who go for sex tourism are probably safer

And there are plenty of middle-aged Polish women who go for that to Egypt. But the resort of Marsa Alam has the reputation of being very calm and of being chosen by retired couples who come there for rest and not for sex tourism.

News / Opole townsfolk outraged by mayor's destruction of their song festival [137]

Ziemuś - are you going to feel ok with that choice? should I remind you how many broken promises PO made?

But that's no excuse, Gumisiuś. It is precisly what PiS was voted for by the electorate - for eliminating the practice of making false promises to the electorate just as this mischievous PO had done before!

At the same time when
Opole townsfolk is outraged by mayor's destruction of their song festival

I shall say I am outraged by the government decision of setting the TV licence fee for 2018 on the same level as before!

This has been a major fraud against the faithful public who were naive enough to believe in what PiS said on the TV licence before.

They said on numerous occasions the TV licence would go down to 10 or 12 ZL per month as soon as they introduce new rules obliging everyone who has a TV set to pay the TV licence.

A great number of people in Poland have not been doing it so far, so those who were paying, paid the licence fee for them.

Now the new rules have been adopted by the government, but the licence fee has remained the same at 22,70 ZL per month

Down with PiS ! We no longer believe in anything they say!

Genealogy / Kupraszewicz - Please help on my last name. [9]

Well, I know the dates now. They came in the times after the battle of Kosovo Pole in 1389 and took part in the battle of Kleck in 1506 and in the battle of Orsza in 1514 (both in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania).

It is quite likely that the Serbian name may have been transformed over ages into its Ruthenian/Polish version of Kupraszewicz. Białystok was right on the border between the Kingdom (of Poland) and the Grand Duchy (of Lithuania). If that is the case, I would suspect more people bearing such a name in modern Balarus, too.

For your info, there are currently two books available in Poland on the battle of Kosovo Pole:

KOD human traffickers, involved in forced prostitution business and sex slavery.

I always thought KOD was heading for a failure from the very beginning, even before the thruth about their leader being a crook emerged. And I still think KOD has no future before them. Whether they were involved in prostitution or sex slavery business I am completely unaware of.

Kukiz

Yes, they were a very possible candidate for a coalition. I've forgotten them, maybe beacuse PSL was said to have been repeating before the election: it doesn't matter which party wins, it is always PSL which comes out victorious.
