Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

They probably said it in the interests of cultural relations. Carp, for me, is about as bad as it gets and I love fish. All that sofy jelly stuff too, hmm...

Life / Beggers namely Kurwa boys in Poland [70]

That's true, those gippos are nasty bits of work but I think they are worse in the Balkans. I was so close to nailing one in Skopje, Macedonia. He was so persistent. I didn't fancy meeting his family of 20 bare-knuckle boxers in one go, though.

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

They didn't tell you that they switched the dish to lemon sole at the last minute, did they? ;) Now that's a real fish.

It's oily and tastes bland does carp.

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

I wouldn't even feed carp to a horse. I saw many of them in Carrefour, all with nowhere to swim and stuck in a vat of water, waiting to be chopped up. It's such a strange choice. Does this fish have any religious significance? Obviously, a fish generally is a symbol of Christianity but the carp surely didn't pip the others to the post.

That's the other side, Harry. If anyone gave me hassle, I'm sure the two beggar brothers would have sth to say about it and jump in. You don't need to give them much and they'll be on your side.

I hate the ones that hover around in shops, waiting for an opportune moment to scrounge. There was one today who came my way but I just scowled at him. I might have given him a mighty skelp round the lug had he come any closer.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Yeah, those Nobel Prizes are a joke. They are sth that kids see as good but enquiring adults see as a sham for the most part.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

Katowice is fine for a first time option. It is quite a big city and has a sizeable expat population. The city centre is a bit ugly but you can get round that.

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

It's also more a language of context. Sometimes a bit of guesswork is needed with Polish as to what the speaker is saying.

Using Polish is a must to learn more effectively. When learning a language, one must be humble and be prepared to accept corrections and advice. There is no room for the overly proud learner.

'No one is sure if Paul Nipkow actually built a working prototype of his television system. It would take the development of the amplification tube in 1907 before the Nipkow Disk could become practical. All mechanical television systems were outmoded in 1934 by electronic television systems',

from inventors.about.com/od/germaninventors/a/Nipkow.htm

Not even a prototype? Almost all inventors I know had a prototype. Just think of what prototype means, M-G. Some lyrics from Pink Floyd's song 'Time' spring to mind ;) ;)

Between 1/5 and 1/4 were won by Jews. Israelis Jews? I don't know.

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, LOL. Joke of the century I think.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Well, you could just as easily say it was Philo Taylor Farnsworth or Vladimir Kosma Zworykin. They were both conducting experiments at the time. As they say, history is written by the winners or those with sway. Some would say that Baird pipped him to the post as he had completed his invention by 1926. Farnsworth did in 1927.

Ta, dupa! ;) Nipkov? Geez, what next, Sukmakokov or Bugarov? What did they invent, smartass? ;) ;) I think you've been watching too much Flash Gordon, M-G. Dr Flexi Jerkov ;) ;)

Let's stay on track. As a Scot, I can say that many Jews are creative people. They put themselves in the right places and can carve out niches for themselves.

I've noticed that it comes down to modesty and non-defensiveness to say that. I'm proud of what I and my countrymen have created. I have no reason to compare myself with the Jews, just to acknowledge their contribution to the world.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

It's a hard call, ET. I dare say you are right if you put the right apparatus in place and create the right conditions. However, we should remind ourselves that real credit should go to those with real original thought and not any country. Scotland, for example, gets credited with creating Dolly but 2 Englishmen actually did the work. We can take some credit for giving them the means but it was their minds that did the hard work. A harder issue is pinpointing an inventor when others do the dogsbody work. Look at the lightbulb. Edison gets the praise for that but a Scotsman and many others laid the foundations for it. Pick an invention, rarely does it truly emanate from one distinctive source. WWW? All the work of Tim Berners-Lee? Hardly!

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Well, I was having a discussion on Jewish people and I was singing the praises of some of their Noble prize winners and contribution to entertainment. There are some truly smart cookies within their ranks. I was asked to place them on a scale, sth I don't like doing, and was asked if they were above your average Pole in intelligence terms. If I was pushed to say, I'd say yes. This seemed to rile the Poles but I have no qualms in saying it.

Some are smart and some aren't. I don't like comparing and certainly dislike talking of better. Just different simply. It got a response though, lol.

We must acknowledge the great contribution of Jewish people across a range of disciplines.

Life / The Poles - do they "bumble" through life? [29]

I must say, I do see a lot of bumbling types on the streets. They walk without direction and without any urgency or purpose. Not a lot of work going on half the time, just complaining in shops.

You can't closely follow people these days without due cause and precious few are intel officers. However, just watch people and think to yourself, 'what work are they really doing?'. I, for one, can't see anything remotely resembling work amongst quite a few here. Some are just too begrudging to work in teams so I applaud those that can. If complaining is work then they are at the top of the pile ;) ;)

News / New Polish gambling law - outlawing gambling except in casinos [34]

Poland could be entering the murky waters of politicians getting in on the act and setting up secret accounts for their own private gain. An expert in the field, Mike Ruppert, gave a presentation about accrued profits from money laundering by the CIA. They set up accounts in NYC to dump the profits from dealings in South America.

As lesser said, the problem will merely be driven underground but still under the watchful eye of those that like to operate 'na lewo'. They will find ways to keep the profits rolling in, they always do.

News / What Poland can't do right [113]

It can't keep a highly effective transport option alive. Getting rid of the trams was a farce. Buses are better as an intercity option and trams as an intracity option.

Life / Food deliveries in Poland [18]

I get some good Chinese food from a place called Fantastico. 14zł plus the second dish for 9zł. Some really good food which gets delivered quite quickly.

Poland is quite effective for delivering food. They operate cheap vehicles or even bicycles to get their food to you.

What defence have the Polish government got for making that change? Social evolution? New-found morality? Curbing gross profits by proprietors? The way I see it, the principle has remained the same through time and are they facing up to the mafia by outlawing it?

"Politicians should legislate to get rid of themselves". One of the best quotes on PF for a long time. Nice one, lesser! That should be framed somewhere.

Again, true about the black market. Many Poles are hard-headed and wouldn't accept such a decision. They would go head-to-head with the police and refuse to go along with the intrusive decision.

History / Pole, Hungarian, two good friends [58]

The Carpathian Basin cannot extend very far as I saw a large mix of skin colour there. They had some guys playing on flutes and they looked more like Native Americans. A very interesting people, those Magyars.

That goes against the thrill of the gamble though, delph. I'm not seeking to defend gambling here but it's a legal way of life for some people. Look at the lottery, could you imagine the jackpot being lowered to 1000PLN? Nobody would play.

Business is one big risk too, more so in some industries. Should we always perform the rescue function at the expense of personal choice and entertainment? It is damaging for families but it is for them to work it out.

A new place has just popped up here and I know of others that will not react kindly to such meddling in their private lives. It comes down to social responsibility and managing your free time effectively. Lesser is right, they don't need to extend their tentacles into every aspect of our private lives. Just look at Japan, they have such allegiance to their companies and still they manage to 'slot in' some time for pachinko (pinball). Go to Nagoya, pinball central, and you'll see salarymen aplenty. I think some poorer people here spend more time cashing in bottles to get the extra groszy they need, rather than playing pinball and puggies. In Scotland, we let the people decide. We don't see it as a major vice to be stamped out.
