News / Priest from Poland claims Lego is "a tool of Satan" [35]

This guy's the wrong side of fifty, so he's had plenty of time to grow into an oak. But he's still an nut. And no, he's not an expert on what toys are good or not for children.

At least his calls for a ban on Lego will go the way of his calls for a ban on Hello Kitty.

News / Priest from Poland claims Lego is "a tool of Satan" [35]

A few years ago the toy shops were all full of tanks and guns for boys and anorexic-looking dolls for girls. Did they do harm? Who knows?

Banning Harry Potter and Halloween (as some would like to) is unlikely to make the world a better place.

News / Germany returns WW2 loot to Poland [14]

Germany has returned an 18th Century painting that was looted from Poland's National Museum by the Nazis in 1939.
The piece by Venetian artist Francesco Guardi, entitled "Palace Stairs", was taken shortly after Germany invaded.
The small painting depicts noblemen talking at the grand stairs of Venice's Doge Palace. Berlin hopes the move will revive talks over some 300,000 documents, including manuscripts by Mozart and Beethoven, that it wants to recover from Poland.

bbc/news/world-europe-26829148

There's plenty in Germany that belongs to Poland, in Poland that belongs to Germany and in Russia that belongs to both. Russia will not negotiate in the foreseeable future, but good that Germany and Poland are sorting things out. The fascinating but mostly sealed esoteric, masonic and occult collection held in the Palace at Ciążeń was seized by the pre-war German state from organisations that in many cases still exist. No German museum has any interest in it, and nor does Poland. It's all catalogued and wrapped up carefully, with a small part of the collection available to view during pre-arranged visits. But there are people who would treasure some of the artefacts.

There's also huge amounts of art round Germany and the famous Berlinka collection. Now the two countries are friendly, perhaps it's time to do some housekeeping.

Even a quarter of what you hear in some pulpits in PL is quite scary. Fortunately not everywhere.

In this case, the reported statements are his actual words. Almost as silly as the politician who wanted to ban teletubbies.

News / Krakow, Poland considers co-hosting the Winter Olympic in 2022 with Slovakia (UPDATE) [30]

if you are talking about Sochi

About London 2012.

Hosting the Olymics is a vanity project

That's the phrase I was looking for.

Almaty can afford it easily but is in the middle of nowhere, Oslo has the best infrastructure (plus the cash), Lviv can't afford it and doesn't have the infrastructure and Beijing held the main games although their human rights record has come under much more scrutiny since then.

Perhaps Oslo's the best bet.

they certainly behave as if they don't care in the slightest.

Anyone with half a brain is just freaked out by all that stuff. Clowns like this make things much harder for the clergy who have dedicated their lives to actually doing some good. And the hierarchy don't seem to care because frankly some of them are just as weird.

News / Priest from Poland claims Lego is "a tool of Satan" [35]

A Polish priest has warned parents to be on their guard against Lego, warning the plastic blocks are a tool of Satan and can "destroy" children's souls...
...Father Kostrzewa's attack on Lego is not the first time he has accused toys of harbouring evil. Hello Kitty and My Little Pony have also come under his scrutiny, with the latter being described as a "carrier of death".

Not an April Fool's joke. And they wonder why Sunday attendances are evaporating.

News / Krakow, Poland considers co-hosting the Winter Olympic in 2022 with Slovakia (UPDATE) [30]

I'd say that a lot more than 10% of Poles would love to see the Olympics in Poland,

Hoteliers, taxi drivers and prostitutes, same as anywhere. The sick, the unemployed, the elderly and those in run down social housing (or people desperately trying to get on the waiting list) would very much prefer to watch it on TV from somewhere else.

Being the only country in Europe that didn't bother to show the Paralympics on state TV certainly doesn't help their bid much either.

Food / Where can I buy Swedka Swedish vodka in Warsaw? [12]

The next bottle I buy will be Nemiroff.

We tend to get that (plus Obolon beer) for certain reasons. There's a nice brand of particularly fiery chilli vodka too that the market at Stadion Dziesieciolecia used to sell ;-)

Food / Where can I buy Swedka Swedish vodka in Warsaw? [12]

Good vodka is good vodka, full stop

Spot on! Sometimes people say the best comes from Belarus. In Poland though, there's so much vodka (good, bad and middling) that there's no need to buy imported stuff.

"Yes, alright, Russian vodka is ok if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish."Hugh Laurie, 17-Jan-2014

I don't buy anything Russian if I can avoid it for several reasons.

Law / Do some teaching business in Poland, Can invoice customers from UK business? [11]

It's not long become legal and smaller companies have no experience of this - added to which there are very good reasons for them playing it safe as far as invoices and tax in Poland are concerned.

Just register in PL or do it on an umowa o dzielo.

By the way, if you only stay for 6 months, you'll have barely made the contacts you need to start selling lessons.

Law / Do some teaching business in Poland, Can invoice customers from UK business? [11]

I have a unlimited company in UK ('soletrader').

Aside from the fact that a sole trader isn't a company, the answer to your question is yes, in theory; no, in practice. There are various sound reasons that firms are reluctant to pay overseas invoices if they can avoid it.

Travel / Has anyone ever stayed at the Guest House Wytchnienie in Lublin? [6]

The place I stayed at last seems to have gone, but there are plenty of cheap options in Lublin. The Królewska seems very central and the Huzar looks ok. Most of the online booking services have plenty of places in Lublin.

Beware of some of these 'guest rooms' like the one you mention - they aren't always good.

Work / NO JOBS IN POLAND FOR ENGLISH PEOPLE EXCEPT TEACHING? [44]

pretend native speakers

When I used to advertise for native speakers, I got plenty of CVs from Poles who'd spent 5 years or so abroad and considered themselves to be native speakers. Yeah, right!

Law / Dying in Poland - Inheritance tax ? [62]

I am a British citizen living and working in Poland and therefore resident here for tax purposes

If you're in PL for 183 days per year, yes.

Am I obliged to declare this inheritance to the Polish tax authorities, and if so, will I be taxed on the money?

If you did so, you'd be almost unique in your honesty.

Work / NO JOBS IN POLAND FOR ENGLISH PEOPLE EXCEPT TEACHING? [44]

All I know is that teachers here are having a lean time.

This is very true. One thing that has affected it is people moving to Poland with spouses - not teachers, not training, no idea how to get people to learn, but they speak English, need a job and are fodder for the worst kind of private language school.

Here you'll find quite a few native speakers working for 40 and sometimes 30 per hr.

Exactly. In Warsaw until about 5 years ago, it started at 60zl per hour and went much higher. Unfortunately the dross who are chasing work have forced the price down.

Travel / Suggestions for what i should do or see in Lodz? [16]

although it is run down it has a certain charm all of it's own.Thumbs up from me, I liked £ódź :)

Exactly how I feel.

For restaurants etc, if the OP wants a real treat (and doesn't mind paying for it) L'ecru (at Manufaktura) is one of the best restaurants in Poland. Reservations and smart clothes are necessary. For a cheaper treat, that Uighur (North East Chinese Muslim) place is/was on ul. Sienkiewicza. There's also a few nice places at the bottom of the pedestrianized bit of Piotrakowska.

There's also the Cinematography Museum which is worth going to for the building alone.

Law / Registration of right hand drive cars in Poland - possible? [82]

I still don't think, unfortunately, that the stubborn Polish government will listen to sense on this subject :(

If it's a court decision, it'll have to go to the next stage with appeals etc and even if it's ratified, it'll still take a while to filter down to the registration office.

Lodz has excellent options for cusine.

There's also (assuming it's still there) Poland's only Uighur restaurant. The place is nothing special to look at but has delicious food.

Life / Is it common for Polish people to speak English in Poland? [122]

The same can't be said for Polish men though who tend to be lazy, inconsiderate, prejudice, and very ignorant.

Now that's a sweeping generalisation. Some Polish men speak English very well and some women are lazy and all the other things you say.

History / Ordinary Polish people who collaborated with the Communist authorities? [28]

Is there anything I can read which will shed light on this period of Polish history?

Three and a half million members, some of whom were very keen and optimistic about a brave new world, some who were cynical opportunists and most on a continuum somewhere in between.

I know people who had senior positions working for Poland overseas who were not in the party.

You're right. There were even other political parties, albeit affiliated to the PZPR

There was also a substantial presence of organised workers in Poland long before the formation of the PZPR.

Travel / Suggestions for what i should do or see in Lodz? [16]

You're hearing right. It's run down, dirty and depressing

Or in the centre, in the grid of streets, some might say it has unity of architecture due to being a C19th planned town, faded elegance from its time as the westernmost city of the Russian Empire and a melancholy feel.

The ubiquitous antisemitic graffiti is a major downer.

Very true

However, with the opening of two large shopping malls at either end of the main drag, the city center has lost a lot of its vitality, and a lot of my old favorite haunts no longer exist.

Very true
