News / Poles, Polonians and aliens on Pussy Riot? [182]

you seem to be forgetting that we believers are the Church. I

You also forget that many Church-goers are Gazeta Wyborcza reading and are completely against the Church interference in State affairs. I know several people who have walked out of churches after hearing rubbish about politics - can't you see the harm that's done by aligning themselves with one faction or another?

I also know many people who will not go to a church that openly supports Radio Maryja. These people are Catholics, yet they're completely disgusted with what elements of the Church are doing. Are they any less Catholic than you? Of course not.

History / Interactive map of Poland 960-2004 [43]

It might have been much longer in Polish hands, but the East was already a significant burden in the II RP - even if WW2 didn't happen, it's likely that it would still be a very poor and undeveloped region. Don't forget that the "Recovered Territories" were Polonised quickly and effectively - whereas Poles were very much minorities in some areas and not even a significant majority in the cities.

Let's also not forget that with the border going West, Poland is much more "central" than it was then.

And at least from a military point of view, the current borders are much easier to deal with.

History / Interactive map of Poland 960-2004 [43]

I believe, you guys would be better of with previous borders from 1939.

What, stuck to the East, with shockingly bad infrastructure in the former Russian (and to a certain extent, Austrian) areas?

Now, would you please post your desired maps for 2020, 2030, 2050?

Same as it is now. Borders are largely irrelevant in today's Europe anyway.

Law / 1 euro = 4,46637049 złotego polskiego [21]

Well, you have to have money to speculate, unlike a certain poster.

(PS : that certain poster appears to have moved back to the US)

Law / 1 euro = 4,46637049 złotego polskiego [21]

read last week a piece by some esteemed genius in one of the profiteers (ML or such like) that the PLN is irrationally high versus the euro.

It is absolutely high - there's no justification for it to sit at the level that it is. Anything between 3.5-4 is good - lower than 3.5 and the exporters will suffer, but more than 4 is just artificially weak. With the constitutional limit on debt and a Government that is hell-bent on not exceeding that limit, the Zloty just isn't that weak.

Then again, it's worth what people think it's worth. It wouldn't take much speculation to move it 50gr one way or another.

UK, Ireland / Hyperthetical question about publicising information about a Polish citizen in the UK [8]

But does something published in the UK come under Polish Law. For example if the good old "Sun" printed a photo of him would they incur the wrath of the Polish legal system? It's interesting.

They could do, but the UK lawyers for The Sun would laugh in the face of the Polish legal system.

it seems that the Polish rules do not always apply.

As is usual here, it probably depends on how deep the relevant pockets are.

I do think though that Poland doesn't interpret libel the way that England does, with the insane provision that if someone can access the libel in England, then they can be sued in England.

Law / 1 euro = 4,46637049 złotego polskiego [21]

that still quite high.

Not really. Anyone with a grasp of forex rates knows that the ideal rate is around 3.7 or so. For it to sit at 4:1 is not that bad.

Law / Maintenance & Rights: Polish mother & child in Poland, Irish father in the UK [57]

Also, child support and "access" as you call it, are completely seperate.

In my view - the two are totally linked. There are too many cases when a parent is denied access (it's a British term) to the child despite courts ordering so - so in my view, by accepting cash, the PWC has the obligation to provide access to the child.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

Drove the car for a month until my turbo blew up (that was my fault).

How come it was your fault, out of curiosity? (don't like cars with them, don't like driving them, so I'm clueless about them)

No, you really need real winter tires in Poland and in Europe cause uh... people drive when it snows. In the US, everyone stays home. And in some EU countries its the law punishable by a really hefty fine.

As far as I know, in Poland - if you have an accident and don't have the appropriate tyres, you'll get the blame regardless if it was your fault or not.

Work / Companies within Poznan (positions available for native English speakers) [18]

Well, the advice is simple : Poznan is a hell of a tough place without language skills, education and relevant experience. Oh, and basic competence.

If he's interested in a job so much, he'd ask me for more information. Can't be many sales jobs out there in Poznan that don't require Polish skills...

Work / Companies within Poznan (positions available for native English speakers) [18]

It might not completely exclude you, but with no second language, no relevant (or even vaguely relevant) degree and no real work history, it's always going to be a struggle - especially when you're up against well educated Poles with two/three languages. What makes you different to them? There's no difference to the average employer if their staff are "fluent" or "native".

If Arvato are going out of business, then it's going to be an even bigger struggle for you because you'll be up against everyone from there.

As I said, I know someone that might hire you on a commission-only basis for a sales job. Interested?

Travel / Warsaw airport to Bus Station Wilanowska stand number 14 [22]

Get the train instead; it is less uncomfortable and there will be fewer riff-raff.

Actually... to be fair, I've always encountered far more riff-raff on the average TLK train than on PolskiBus.

(works in your favour too if you want to avoid paying for a ticket...)

Work / Companies within Poznan (positions available for native English speakers) [18]

So if the contract hasn't expired, how come you lost your job before then?

If you want advice, then consider this - you're struggling to find work in Poznan, you don't speak any other languages, you don't speak Polish, and you don't have any skills that are in demand from companies that work in English. Do you really think Poznan is a good idea?

I know Poznan fairly well - and one thing that I can tell you is that there's immense competition from young Polish graduates. But with no Polish skills and no even halfway relevant degree, what makes you stand out over them?

Work / Companies within Poznan (positions available for native English speakers) [18]

There are very few companies that will hire native English speakers who aren't competent in the Polish language. The ones that do hire are the ones that are either (as you've already found out) call centres, or they're looking for people with skills that far exceed what you have.

Put it this way - what do you offer that the average Polish graduate doesn't have? I've just posted a job advert yesterday for a PA - with fluent English being required. So far, I've got over 50 CV's to look through - in less than 24 hours. You're immediately at a disadvantage compared to them - and they all have degrees. There's even more and more non-EU citizens with reasonable skills in Polish looking for work, too.

I know someone that might be interested in hiring you on a commission-only basis, but that's about it. Could be good money, could be crap - hard to say. It's still a job, I suppose. If you're interested, let me know.

If you couldn't hack it in the airlines call centre and couldn't get enough work as a teacher - have you thought about calling it a day? There really aren't many more businesses willing to hire someone who only speaks English.

News / Polish WikiLeaks (PolandLeaks.org) [6]

A commenator on Poland's TVP Info found it strange that Assange is so bent on revealing classified and top sercret US infoomation and sees himself as a champion of civil rights and free speech, but had a programme on Russia Today totally ignoring Russian censoirshiop and secretiveness.

ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4196367,00.html

Totally ignoring? I think not.

This means nothing to me. Go bomb some more innocent people. Maybe you'll sqeeze some democracy up their ass.

You say this, while living in a country which actively supports US wars.

Law / How can I qualify for an EU/ Polish/ German citizenship as a US citizen? [8]

Doesn't matter unless he served in the military from what I have read.

Wrong. Anyone obtaining foreign citizenship prior to the 1962 date would immediately be stripped of Polish citizenship.

At least for the OP, there's also a chance that they were never Polish citizens - being born in a displaced persons camp sounds very much like they were refugees from the Recovered Territories - which would suggest that they were quite possibly German citizens all along.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

There are, but I'm not fond of them - my car grips far better with the right tyres for the right conditions. All-weather ones aren't really suitable for when the snow/ice comes, and although they'll "do" - I'd rather have specific winter ones. In summer, you really notice the difference too with tyres specifically for the summer conditions. Driving all-year ones when it's 36c outside (like today) is just horrible.

The variation in conditions is extreme enough to warrant using both - although I did hang on with summer tyres until November or so last year...

UK, Ireland / First proper "Polish" School in the UK - The Next Stage of Ghettoisation [283]

What are you waiting for then? Come on in, the water's lovely! ;-)

I could never do it, how you manage to replicate documents precisely is...well, a work of art :)

b) they were both sworn under the old system (the new exam is frankly simply too difficult).

Does the exam test people both ways, or just into Polish?

It would seem that a "fair" exam would require examination by native speakers of both languages.

Putin is perhaps the best leader from all European nations.
The more north and west you go the more currupt they get.

Oh, you are such a laugh, aren't you?

Go and learn about en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siloviki before you speak further, child.

Everyone I know has gotten ripped off at the mechanics.

Define "ripped off".

I'm quite happy to pay good money for a good service. For instance, I could get the tyres changed in winter for as little as 60PLN. But I don't like the guys that do it for that price - so I take it to another place and pay 80PLN for the same thing, because I like their attitude. Same job, same quality - but they're nice to me there.

I have not yet heard of a British worker who would be keen to embark on the career of Polish sworn translator.

I wouldn't mind!

(I wonder if there are any? I know there are some Ukrainian/Slovaks who have the title, but...English natives?)

Law / How to get a private NIP number in Poland (for a foreigner) ? [28]

PS. Most people don't seem to be aware that NIP is no longer being issued!

That's because it's now your PESEL number that doubles up as your NIP.

I'm not able to pay ZUS via my bank account since I don't have a NIP.

Sure you can - just register yourself legally in Poland and use the PESEL. Sorted.
