UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

1/ Better weather
2/ More emphasis on good food
3/ Diverse and rich natural scenery in Poland
4/ A more comprehensive tourism infrastructure
5/ More culturally engaged than in the UK i.e. free city centre concerts, kaberets etc

1. Better weather in summer in Poland. Much worse weather in winter.
2. Better food in the UK
3. More diverse and rich scenery in the UK than anywhere else in Europe
4. A much more developed tourist infrastructure in the UK as reflected by the comparative visitor numbers. Having said that, the fewer tourist destinations and smaller tourist infrastructure in Poland means that there are far fewer crowds.

5. There are far more free concerts, theatre, opera, cabaret, galleries etc in the UK

Language / Correct way of saying "Again please"? [7]

Youre exactly right - the tone of voice has a lot to do with it. As in "Co Ty gadasz?", just "co Ty?" or even "pojebało Cię?"

News / Is this the first clear and open signal that Poland makes preparations for war with Russia? [163]

That said, a politician in the USSR I mean Russia has called for all 400 to be closed down. We can but speculate on why, but it may be that he's taking the supposed myth too seriously and sees McD's in his country as an obstacle to starting a war?

Hehe.

Joking aside, they'll do all they can to avoid war. If it happened, a few of the oligarchs that control the place would double their fortunes - but even more would lose it. And that's something Putin is unlikely to risk.

He does however need to see that the west mean business.

Life / Wild dogs in Poland, are they a problem for any one but me? [14]

That however is their choice - however hard it is, we can all stop smoking. In Europe I suspect there are more ex-smokers than current smokers.. Abused animals though, have absolutely no choice.

Anyway the point im making is the insidious nature of the monetary system.

Better to try to change the legislation about animal import in the UK and give the Polish authorities the support they need to enforce their own laws.

Well dah, cigarettes kill people but theyre highly addictive so theres a market for them.

Except cigarettes don't feel pain or emotion. Dogs do.

Buy a Yorkshire Terrier in the UK from an official breeder for what about £600

Better still, buy it from someone you trust - or adopt one of the thousands of rescue dogs that are looking for a loving home.

The moral of the story is that if you buy a pet, make sure you see it at the breeder's home with the rest of the litter and the mother. Not imported from somewhere the authorities aren't so good at monitoring standards. These people only do this because there's a market for it.

Love / Why are Polish girls so attracted to German boys? [52]

The Anglo-Saxons are of partial German descent

I think you mean 'were' not 'are'. The Anglo-Saxons started to die out centuries ago.

It's true though that most inventions and technical innovations come from the UK (with a disproportionate number from the North of England and Scotland) but that doesn't have much to do with sexual attraction - unless you have a geek fetish.

You might be right. But a decent-looking woman with a Ph.D in neuroscience is sexier than one with no Ph.D.

Earning power is a powerful aphrodisiac for some.

McDonald's Restaurants confirms it is "temporarily" mothballing its outlets there

Apparently no 2 countries with McDonalds have ever made war against each other. Though I'm told that's a myth. Probably they've stopped due to logistics and territorial franchising.

On a sadder note, Russia has stopped Methadone treatment and needle exchange services in the Crimea. So in the Crimea (which already has scarily high HIV rates) drug users will be back to scoring smack and sharing needles.

He is clearly trying to get a rise out of you. He might as well start a topic that says 'Why are Polish people such *****

That's all these threads are about and yes, some people do start topics like that.

Life / Amazon stops super saver delivery on orders to Poland [40]

£6.40 per delivery plus £1.10 per kilogram. That is pretty steep.

The last time I bought something with (normal delivery) from Amazon (in Jan, a steam cleaner) it didn't seem expensive to get delivered (I used the normal - 3-10 day service) and the last time I bought something with express delivery (Valentine's) it wasn't that much more. I suppose I'm used to courier prices. Parcels within/from the UK are pretty expensive by Royal Mail nowadays too.

I think Amazon dispatch a lot of their stuff from a warehouse in Germany.

News / Germany returns WW2 loot to Poland [14]

In the case of post-war Germany, much of the looted art was in fact looted from both German-born Jews living in Germany at the time

Indeed. Also distress sales (sold for a fraction of the value when people had to leave for the ghetto - an unfortunate amount of Polish families' real estate came like that) which was legal if not moral as well as from so-called abandoned homes, where people had fled or been taken away.

In Herr Gurlitt's inherited collection, a small amount was like that (especially from 'abandoned' homes in France) but most was bought legally on the semi-open market when public galleries sold off their modern art and anything else the regime disliked to private collectors.

The worst offender by far was Russia though who over several years was sending trainloads of booty back from Germany (and some from Poland) every day.

Know rather than knew, I suspect. Regardless of his character, only a small part of the collection is illegal - and the son (who as far as I know is blameless) has no problem returning anything that wasn't bought and paid for.

The issue of looted art is more about older paintings and other artefacts in public rather than private hands. Russia is the worst offender - they still consider them spoils of war. Even Poland has art that was stolen from German citizens.

News / Germany returns WW2 loot to Poland [14]

all

Read the post carefully before replying. Especially the phrase "a lot", which you seem to have read as "all".

Hildebrand Gurlitt (along with other family members who started collecting in the Nineteenth Century) was an art collector long before that regime came to power and afterwards too. Some of the works had even been seized by the post war authorities and returned to him because they were legitimately his. Only a small part of the collection was stolen and his son Cornelius has agreed to return those works.

Also, A lot of the stuff in his flat wasn't stolen. His father bought stuff legitimately as well as dodgily.

Law / Will opening an online company in Poland help with obtaining a visa? [11]

Thanks Jon. Not sure it was yourself on the other thread, but I seem to recall people do on occasion get turned back.

It wasn't. This was pre-EU accession. But it happens still. I recall a Canadian I used to work with who had problems at the border too.

Worth mentioning that the are easier countries than Poland for a Brazilian to get a Schengen visa in, and 1 visa is good for the whole Schengen zone.

News / Priest from Poland claims Lego is "a tool of Satan" [35]

Or a cynicism based on crap like this. Anyone who makes a statement to the media that My Little Pony is evil, deserves all the ridicule (and there is plenty in this case) that is naturally drawn to them.

You don't have to help someone if they're being mugged either. Intelligent people dismiss this clown (and many more of their profession) for the fools they are. Some less educated people might actually take him seriously - and they next thing he says might not just be amusingly stupid like this statement, but downright dangerous.

Sounds quite an interesting installation. A little dark, but then so is Goya and mid-period Picasso. Not to mention Beksinski.

Doesn't make this Hello Kitty-hating clergyman any less of a fool though.

His intention was to reflect on rationalism and education.

Fair enough. The world needs more artists. Even (perhaps especially) ones who challenge people to see things another way.

you never know of course he may have a point

Perhaps, except the Masons strictly and rigorously hold no organisational opinion on anything political (and their members hold such diverse opinions that they'd never agree on anything like that anyway) and Satanist groups (such as they are) have no especial point of view on anything except their internal affairs.
