History / What British unit liberated Poland in 1945?? [445]

With power comes influence, right? ;) ;)

Don't be so sure, Sarkozy has ways and means of getting what he wants :(

If you don't create such 'pockets' then the big guns will always hold the cards and legislate accordingly. Don't you remember the gherkins/pickles case where the EU tried to regulate the length and straightness of ogórki konserwowy? What a joke that was!

I agree, Torq, but you cannot deny that France is a major power in the EU, as is GB. Like it or not, Sarkozy sticks his filthy beak into many pies and gets around. Maybe you should opt for a Slavic Alliance as Crow proposes? Simply put, GB and France wield powerful forceps.

Ignorant about the region? Upon what do you base that assessment? There are specialists in both countries who are paid to keep tabs on key developments so I don't get your point at all.

Take Germany's place and do what exactly? What meaningful actions?

Some dreamers here :) Germany will not implode provided that it takes the right steps to remove certain perceived threats. If Germany's status dwindles in any way, France and the UK are still major powers (both nuclear).

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Such talk is foolish, vetala. Even within one family, there are variations. I know one family member to be very wary of Jews due to his past dealings but his wife to be very open and accomodating.

However, one thing I do believe is that, like virtually all others, Poles blow with the wind. I was discussing this with a colleague and he said that they will paint themselves as tolerant when the cameras are on but, amongst themselves, will say sth different. Please don't take this as a slight, it's just what many natives here have said and noticed.

Bottom line: Some are tolerant and some aren't. Full stop/period!!!!!!

I got 7, Scottie. 9? Are you sure? Do you remember them? The schwa is awkward for them too, a comfortable vegetable.

Vincent, no problem. Please don't take my words as gospel, they are just based on listening to Poles as is much of my Polish.

Poliż dywan, LOL. Lick the carpet :) The ż rolls beautifully into the d

It should but I have heard many Poles say it more like ż. If it is followed by a word like sobie then it will be more like SH in that case. Poliż sobie like poleeshsobie, like one word almost and thus ellision.

Imagine a ż followed by a d, poliż dupę, would it sound more like SH or Ż, I'd say Ż.

Well, if you have any knowledge of linguistic and phonetics at all, you will know why. Does English behave perfectly rationally?

Let me ask you this. Off the top of your head, how many different sounds does 'OUGH' have? How would you teach the 'ough sound' to students of English?

Natural speech evolves. It should be PSHEPRASHAM but many Poles say it more as PSHIPRASHAM. All the way? Nah, you are wrong, trust me!

Poliż is not SH but distinctly ż

Well, let me correct you if I may. Ó and u are pronounced in the same way through linguistic evolution, e.g bułki and gówno. Although I haven't considered all the words with such combinations, I would conjecture that ó is followed by a solid consonant whereas u by a weak sound like ł, e.g kułka, bułka and pierdułka.

£ is a different sound, like the English W.

As for SH, it can be SZ or Ś, not the others. Ż and RZ can be complicated but it comes through practising it, e.g może to morze

Kraków is not read Krakuv at all, Krakoov if anything.

Turku is toorku

Śie doesn't exist, się does

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

I agree with your first point, rock. Maybe that will surprise you but it stands to reason that that should be the case.

You think an agreement brokered by Americans should hold more weight than the history of the region and the passing of hands?

Serbia was the majority before WWII and even for some time afterwards. It was the major power for so long and is still the second largest group there. I think it is a little unfair that they control so much but, rightly or wrongly, they have been in Bosnia for a long time with homes and past generations.

What nonsense! Zionists are and many Rabbis oppose them. Even then, it is a certain type of Zionist that causes problems. Some Zionists want to see Jewish people united and there's nothing wrong with that at all, it's just that they trespassed :(

There is nothing wrong with this voluntary passing to Islam and I even said that above. There is earlier history in Bosnia and you are ignoring it.

At what point can you say that Bosnia belongs to such and such a group, rock? It's VERY relevant. If you can't answer it, you can't really lay claim to the land as there will always be competing claims in such a multi-ethnic country.

Well Rock, you still haven't got my point. Quote me some history and I'll quote you some earlier history. Where does the ultimate claim to land rest? Can you show me?

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

My plan? None. I walked in amongst them in Sarajevo and thought nothing of it. Why should I?

I have no problems with them being an Islamic country if history showed that they wanted to be of their own will and volition.

Why? Because of the influences around them and foreign meddling too.

You didn't answer the other questions, rock. I don't think that everywhere should be Christian at all. Fear can cause conversions too.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

I love the music, rock :) The earliest history was neolithic. Then the Romans. As I said, 1971 was the turning point. Is it a question of right to the land, from whatever source/base, or is it more that the demographic changed and that the Serbs have to accept that? Bosnia was Islamised by the Ottoman Empire as you know but does that mean that it is for all time to be Islamic? It was Christianised first.

What I'm asking is, should crusaders alone be allowed to change the history of the land? What if America went into Nigeria and claimed control of the vast oil fields near there? Would Nigeria become an American colony? What if America decided to fully take it over? What of Nigerian history and evolution then?

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Many Bosniaks moved in due to the crushing effect of WWII on Serbia and Yugoslavia generally. It was only in 1971 that Bosniaks became the majority group. After that, it was Western help and the allowance of Saudi aid that helped preserve the new status quo.

Many were offered substantial tex relief to convert to Islam. What kind of nonsense is that, rock?

After the normal Roman/Celtic occupation, Bosnia saw a Christianising process around 890AD. The Ottoman Empire came after.

Tell me, do you think Bosnia is and should be a Muslim country, rock?

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Feel free to correct me, rock. It's just my understanding based on my reading but my reading has often misled me in the past. It just depends on the sources you choose. It is my understanding that Izetbegovic wanted a Caliphate imposed on Bosnia and for Bosnia to become a predominantely Muslim country. This didn't sit well with Tudjman and Milosevic who, at Kakardevo, wanted to divide Bosnia between themselves, maintaining the Christian element. With Western intervention, Izetbegovic got onside with them and Bosnia started to change more and more. Is it true that 1970 marked the turning point, that Bosnia became more Muslim than Christian, rock? It was certainly the case around WWII that Bosnia was a more Christian country.

I'm not an authority on Bosniaks, no, but I have read and watched a lot so can have some input.

As I said, feel free to correct me. I like you as a poster so we can discuss without going to war as those uncompromising people did ;) ;) ;) Agreed? :)
