USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

To me it's clear. They are a socialist party with traditional values. The two are not mutually irreconciliable as many seem to think.

That's patriotic, Penn. Nationalistic is a dislike of other nations. I'm sure the priest who heard the case drinks. Heck, some of the most moral people I know drink. I wonder why :)

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

It's natural when you are learning English to mix and experiment. It's all good provided that they don't speak to old people that way as many will frown ;)

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

So what is so good about PiS? Values are values but how would they manifest themselves in reality? Fine, be Catholic but what does that really mean in politics? The church windows are glossier? Nationalistic? That can't be good. Traditional? What, Poles cease/have ceased being traditional under PO? So much gutrot spoken!

I can't think how PO would detrimentally affect them so there must be sth alluring to PiS. To me, money transfers are money transfers ;)

Why is nationalistic desirable in the EU, Penn? Or is it desirable?

I don't think the highlanders here care much for Catholicism. They value tradition and drinking more :)

Life / Are Polish people so chaotic and disorganized like Germans say? [89]

Conveying one side of things but quite accurate nonetheless. As I said in another thread, many Poles are fed up of one another and it shows in bureaucratic establishments. They treat one another with contempt. I can't go into the tax office without laughing at how serious some people are.

However, that doesn't speak to the degree of organisation that can be found. They seem to know their jobs well and I've had positive experiences. They expedited my wedding when not duty bound to do so. You can't blame those that are merely following protocol, roca. There are too many layers sometimes, yes, but they are contracted to do things in a certain way. Besides, it's hard to break out of the mould and be yourself in such a place. There is a certain atmosphere there and it's hard to get away from that.

Chaotic implies 'monkey mind' to me. The Poles tend to be pretty calm as clerks in administrative centres. They are not scatty and tend to be meticulous, overly so sometimes. However, they can be snappy but hey, we are only human, right?

UK, Ireland / Poles in Ireland by Peadar de Burca. They "turned their backs on a country that gave them" [195]

It is the Irish that have to build Ireland the most, not the Poles. The Poles covered many bases and thus left the way open for Irish folk to expand the Irish Celtic Tiger. However, the bubble burst and it was largely through overspending, not anything that Poles did. Poles gave to the country and took sth back. See it as a souvenir in paper form ;) ;)

Life / Looking to immigrate to Europe. How is life in Poland? [116]

I would extol the virtues of the Polish economy, why not? Check the wikipedia page (not so official, I know) on the topic and you'll see. Cross-reference various sources and you will see a rosy picture. However, my point is this. Who really sees that money? PO are not really focussing on those on the breadline. Maybe it's the socialist part in me but too many are being left to fall by the wayside and into oblivion. Yeah, some people have to learn to help themselves but that only goes so far.

One thing that cannot be denied is that Poland has come a long way in 21 years. They had a great minister in Sławomir Skrzypek RIP and are holding the ship together well. However, Tusk has squandered an astronomical figure in the war in Afghanistan. That money could have been used for roads, hospitals and education. So NATO would only have had 41 members instead of 42 in operation? So what?? Obama hasn't even waivered the visa requirement so what has Poland got back other than body bags??

Life / Looking to immigrate to Europe. How is life in Poland? [116]

Hague, you make fair points in your comparisons to GB. GB has traditionally been a boom&bust economy and Poland is much more stable in comparison. My advice to the OP would be, steer clear of legal pitfalls and brush up on any business law applicable to your situation. Poland's economy is thriving in many areas and is one of the beacons of Europe. However, the OECD urge caution as you may end up embroiled in a protracted legal case in which Poland doesn't fare too well. Avoid that, make the right contacts and you are off to a flier.

Yes, you have more knowledge of Poland collectively, that goes without saying. However, I know for a fact that what I have said above is correct. You were not wrong in some of what you said but, just like a politician, you just see what you want to see. I prefer to give the SA lady the bigger picture.

Conservative is not an insult. It's just a position sb takes, good or bad. Why so defensive, polmed? I am just putting the other side out there. You know that I made some valid points. This is a forum so let's talk. You are the self-confessed 'expert' after all so what are you afraid of?

Take my arguments to shreds. Go on, I dare you to try ;)

Polmed, I am one of the most optimistic, yet realistic, people around. You sound like a well-off, conservative type that turns a blind eye to certain harsh realities.

The progress regarding stadiums is somewhat better, yes. However, the Mod 'Wrocław' also wrote a post sometime back regarding the lack of progress in Wrocław.

Hythorn, thanks Sir :) There is no sense getting worked up here. I'm safe in the knowledge of what I know to be an accurate assessment of the position. Yes, I like to see the glass as half-full but I don't want to distort the picture unnecessarily.

Polmed, Hague likely lives in a richer part of the country, somewhere in the affluent west. That's how he might only see half of the picture.

Hague, I know differently, you have to trust me on this. Delph is right, some have it good of course but the majority don't. Just sit down for a moment, take the average salary as 3300PLN gross and tally up the costs. Count 1 child or 2 if you want to. Count all the costs of a car. Shopping, bills and many many other costs. I can tell you that you are being insincere to Poles on salaries between 1500-2000PLN. My wife, for example. She is as good as out of money 1 week after her paycheck. Without me, she'd be up sh*t creek without a paddle. Plenty of Poles take out a lot of credit as, well, money doesn't grow on trees. The FACT is that Poland has become much more expensive over the last few years and salaries have only incrementally risen but wholly disproportionately. Painting a rosy picture against this backdrop is just not fair and almost tantamount to lying.

Which part of Poland do you live in anyway? Here in Upper Silesia, many don't enjoy too much comfort.

News / POLAND TO BECOME THE NEXT GREECE? [28]

I see Greece has been crippled by demanding Polki ;) ;) Am I right, southern? ;)

Funny that Poland hasn't been similarly crippled, isn't it? Care to shed any light on that?

News / POLAND TO BECOME THE NEXT GREECE? [28]

Polmed, I think you are being called into action on this thread. Greece = austerity measures to avoid bankruptcy. Do you really feel Poland is headed down that road? I don't.

I also believe that it's unfair to compare Poland with countries that have never been under communism. Negatives? Far from it. That's just reality! We all know the positives of Polish life. There are many many but perspectives should be balanced.

These people are best left avoided. They are some of the lowest forms of life I have ever encountered. They seem to find themselves funny but they are tragically mistaken. Pure losers! Drop them like a hot potato.

However, I can safely say that my dismissal of her fables can stand up to scrutiny. A rounded perspective doesn't really occupy much of a place here. And no, this is not a hating thing as I really have many positive things to say. I just won't allow 'promotional brochures' types distort the fuller picture.

Poland is a lovely country in so many ways but let's not lose perspective.

KA, you are embarrassing yourself again. She is from SA and names can be selected for all manner of reasons anyway.
