USA, Canada / Do any other Polish Americans feel that our culture needs to be more well preserved? [38]

@time1865
Oh, come on.
We already know it by heart:
You're Polish American.
Your ancestors left Poland about 150 years ago but you think you know everything about Poland even though you've never been here.
You won't bother to come here because Poland is the size of Nevada ( in fact, all European countries are like that and you don't care about Europe).

You think you know Polish but Poles don't understand you. But it's their fault and they speak terrible English. And they live in poverty and you're better than them. And why do they keep coming to the US?

And why do people keep complaining about America on this forum? How dare they? It doesn't matter most are not even Polish you'll take an offence anyway.

And you don't want anything from the state 'cause you're so great.
And why do people get so overqualified?
And why would you keep your Polish American traditions after reading so many 'terrible' things on this forum.
And you embrace Polish jokes, ha ha ha.
Did I miss something.?

And no, I doubt your Christmas will be like Christmas in Poland. What makes you think so?
Are you the best of both nations? I doubt. Having read your posts, I'm pretty sure I have met better people from both nations. I'm sorry.

As for Polish Americans, if you feel any sort of connection with Poland and mostly your Polish family and your own family traditions, keep them. They're part of you.

If you have enough money, come and visit Poland to find out more.

News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

It seems to me too many of you guys here focus too much on this British-American/left-right war. It's like nothing really matters. The same arguments are repeated over and over again and it doesn't matter what politicians can or should do for the citizens but who wins the silly argument.

PiS won the elections. Two years ago. As any other government they should respect the constitution and the citizens. It doesn't matter what the surveys say. There's still a lot of time left till the next elections.

They're the government of both those who voted for them and those who didn't. Both of these groups have a right to criticise them if that's how they feel.

The previous can't be totally uncritical mainly because they trusted them. The latter because they still have a free will and hopefully all Poles understand how terrible it was to live in a totalitarian country.

The media can't be influenced by the government. We had it, too. Mind you, even the US criticised fining TVN for broadcasting anti-government demonstrations.

Just a post by me -a woman. I do apologise for voicing my opinion. In my defense I'll say a baked a cake today.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

If you really want to know what Poland is like, come and visit. But come with an open mind.
After all it's just the size of Nevada - unlike your wonderful country ;) Surprisingly enough, most European countries are small compared to the US.

You can't blame people for not wanting to talk about their country to a random man in the street. How about making Polish friends?

The question is whether you want to as they live in the poorest areas of New Jersey as you say. ;)

As for Polish jokes, the problem is that you believe they're true. Reread your post to find out how many generalisations you make.

If you were really into learning Polish you would have done it years ago. But it's never too late, I guess. Don't blame your grandparents for that and start learning. It will take years.

As for people answering your previous posts, why do you assume they're all Polish immigrants to the states? I'm Polish living in Poland with no intention of moving to the US. As for others, you got replies from an American Jew, an American living in Europe or a Brit living in Poland. One is a Pole in the US, not sure about others.

To sum up, change attitude, decide who you are and stop blaming others for how you feel.

Language / How to properly ask for girlfriend's hand in marriage to Polish speaking parents? [6]

@duke104
The phrase you quoted is fine. No need to add 'in marriage'. It's kind of obvious you don't want to chop her hand off ;)

If you want to do it in the traditional way, bring flowers for her mum and something for her dad. It's usually some good alcohol - but check if he drinks. Or ask your girlfriend for advice.

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

@gumishu
I know Biskupin was a Lusatian settlement.
But as far as I know there's no solid evidence the people were either proto- Germanic or proto-Slavic.
What, in fact, do we know about the ethnicity of the people who lived thousands of years ago? So I've been wondering if anyone could direct me to any confirmed data.

As for migration of different peoples, it's kind of obvious.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

AOC might be 15 but there are fortunately other restrictions regarding sex with people under 18. Offering money for sex with the underage as well as forcing them to have sex is illegal. So stop claiming it's ok to call teenagers sluts just because of your sick imagination.

Hopefully, the perv will get locked up soon.
Too many men here seem to know absolutely nothing about women.
You don't learn about women watching porn. Just like you don't jump off a building and fly just because you have seen 'Superman'.

Identified by whom?
Would you care to provide a source for your claim and briefly summarise the evidence on which the theory in question is based?

News / Eggs in Poland paying for the 550+ [8]

The price of eggs in Poland also almost doubled - depending on the shop. The same applies to butter.
I don't know if that's connected with 500+ but it's annoying as wages aren't going up - unlike the prices.
It has happened before and eventually they had to lower the prices as people cut down on shopping certain items.

Life / Should Poland Introduce a Thanksgiving Day? [24]

@mafketis
I don't really mind American Santa Claus but I still remember St Nicholas from my kindergarten days - with a tall hat and a crosier. Kids nowadays probably wouldn't know it's Mikołaj.

We were told we would get a rozga (not sure how to translate that but it's a sort of twig for beating naughty kids ;)) if we weren't good.

As for Thanksgiving, isn't it related to the American history and tradition? What's the point of introducing it in Poland?

Life / Should Poland Introduce a Thanksgiving Day? [24]

@rozumiemnic
Kids just get some gifts here but św. Mikołaj these days looks more like Coca Cola Santa Claus than the traditional image of St Nicholas.

Dads, uncles etc dressed as św. Mikołaj looked scary, too ;)

Life / Should Poland Introduce a Thanksgiving Day? [24]

@rozumiemnic
It's actually Dziady but hardly anyone remembers or celebrates it.
As for other typically Polish celebrations, it's Andrzejki this week, Barbórka on December 4th- a big deal for miners (and mostly them unless you have a Barbara in your family or among your friends) and Mikołajki on 6th - kids love it.

All Saints' Day is November 1st and All Souls' Day is November 2nd.

Language / How do I make my Polish sound more 'natural?' [14]

@BumSkillet
Actually, as far as I know, not necessarilly 'polskie'. ;)
They meant no harm, I bet.
Listen to native speakers, watch films, listen to music in Polish. You may actually try recording yourself to compare your speech to native speakers' and practice.

It takes time, though.

Study / Study in Poland without English IELTS? [28]

But how does it work in your opinion?
Do they focus so much on speaking correct English that they lose their charisma?
I mean, after all their knowledge is the same, so is the body language. The only thing that changes is the language. How do they suddenly become boring by changing the language?

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

No, you can't.
A teacher employed by a state school needs to fulfill the Ministry of Education's official requirements. They need a degree. If they have a degree (even if it's no esl) and a certificate recognised by the Ministry - fine. But not without proper qualifications and a degree.

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

A degree is a degree - a university degree - bachelor's at least. Most have a master's degree - bachelor's is a relatively new idea in Poland. Plus obviously if you have a degree in maths, you can't teach English.

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

All teachers at Polish state schools need to have a degree. It's been like this for years. Even when I went to school. Even kindergarten teachers ...

So does any native speaker of English who wants to work in a state school. And proper qualifications ...

Law / Holiday entitlement in Poland (conditions for receiving holiday)? [5]

prawo.money.pl/kodeks/pracy/dzial-siodmy-urlopy-pracownicze/rozdzial-i-urlopy-wypoczynkowe/art-167

They can actually according to 167/1.
You'd be paid ekwiwalent za niewykorzystany urlop if there was no possibility for you to takę holiday. But obviously the employer gives you the possibility even if you' d rather get more money.

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

I didn't say you'd said they were losers :)

My point is that everyone doing their job right and contributing to the country's budget should be respected both by the society and their employers. No matter how much they're paid.

There are far too many people who choose to live on benefits because they wouldn't work for little money. And they don't work for years. It's frustrating to realise one's taxes are spent on those who choose not to work at all.

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

Oh, come on. Why would anyone doing their job right be considered a loser?
The thing is that most native esl teachers are not employed by state schools but language schools that offer junk contracts and little social security. Teaching in-company courses is usually done by language schools that get most of the money paid by the company in question. The teacher gets just a fraction ...

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

@Ray20607
There's another thread here about Profi-lingua - it should help you to find out what to expect from a language school.
@mafketis@Atch
Yes, I meant Standard English. But as much as I love listening to Brits, I have no intention to sound like one.
English is a medium of communication. That's why so many people learn it. Only few will be interested in learning about its phonetics. I guess it applies to other languages, too.

As for native and non-native esl teachers, most of the people who taught me were Poles. Some were good at their job, others weren't. I also had two American teachers of English. One was really good, flexible and committed while the other wasn't. He taught our group for one semester. Most of the classes were peer teaching ... we were supposed to prepare classes. Not a bad idea but not in every class while the teacher is sitting with his legs on the desk just observing the class ...
