What on earth is the fascination of Indians, Pakistanis and Nepalese with Poland?
I think it is pork, available in big quantity and high quality, in addition to good beef.
It reminds me of two guys I met. One was an Israeli, eating ham at a hotel in Gliwice and saying that although he could buy pork "at a butcher behind the corner" in his country, nothing could match genuine Polish ham. The other one was an Indonesian, telling me Malesians having the luck to visit Indonesia, usually returned home with terrible hangover and were explaining their Muslim authorities they had to had eaten something very unhealthy in that "pagan country" ;-)

Oh, I remember a puzzled look of an American guy in Warsaw when he studied a restaurant menu and thought the figure "30" was about US dollars ;-)
Marynka, equal surprise to me was to learn quite recently that the Romanian Leu (ROL) has been denominated lately and it is now New Romanian Leu (RON), worth slightly less than 1 PLN now.

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]
I used the Tunnel and it was very convenient. If I'm not wrong the whole route including Katowice is toll-free. You'll only have to pay twice on the A4 segment towards Kraków. The price depends on size of your vehicle. I do not think more than PLN50 (about 10 quids) will be charged, with a normal car it is half of it, paid in two parts. You can exchange some British pounds after entry to Poland, there are Exchange kiosks.

shale shifter, the route to Kraków given by Wroclaw Boy is perfect. Then you -- after (SIGH!) passing Kraków -- should continue eastwards on E40 via Bochnia to Tarnów. The road directions show also Rzeszów as next destination and Medyka - the border crossing to Ukraine. The E40 is not particularly impressive, be careful there and avoid overtaking. As far as I can remember, the traffic is heavy and the road is full of trucks.
Tarnów is not a big city by Polish standards. There is wonderful (but small) Old Town uphill, large chemical works and nothing else really exciting. I've been to Tarnów many times, so I know.

Ranrod, I'm more and more inclined to connect my PC to my recording studio and say couple of sounds for you.
Same as English requires writing "qu", same Polish forbids some letter combinations. "ći" or "ćś" are non-existent, unless you say:
"Zięćśpi" but these are two separate words.
"ć' is followed by a consonant.
"cz" and "ć" are two different sounds. Say "Bydgoszcz", no-one would say "Bydgość" even if this is possible to pronounce. Note: Never "ćś" but there are many words with "ść" such as kość, miłość, dość.
I was talking about the mutiny for one reason. The phrase was: 'Soczewica, koło, miele, młyn". If you said "Soćiewica" then you would be killed because cz is a very distinct sound not to be confused with "ć"...

Truly. In 1986 I met a Polish-English couple in Masuria. She was British and could speak very good Polish, she only could not grab some idioms. Her husband told her:
"Suzi, zrób mi proszę herbatę, ale mocną jak siekiera".
After couple of minutes, Suzi appeared holding a cup of tea in her right hand and an axe in her left hand:
"Marek, proszę, oto herbata. Ale po co ci siekiera?!"

I'm sorry, ranrod but I and my wife are laughing at you now. My wife has asked: "Does he say wieczność as wiećnoszcz?"
I tested it by putting together nonsensical combinations of these characters and the Poles could not tell the difference between ś and sz or ć and cz, nor could they tell the difference between ci and czi nor si and szi. I concluded Poles 'think' they can tell the difference, but they really can't, they just know the vocabulary so the know what word is being said. They deduce which one is being used from context.
The Polish people were just merciful to you...

Just recently, I translated the chorus of our new song to English, and not thinking English I made a grave mistake:
"Najlepsza baba to własna graba" <-- correct Polish sentence
"The best maid is your own hand" <-- What are you getting out of it?
"Your own hand is the best maid" <-- this is the correct meaning.
I just made a mistake in the position, making the sentence completely wrong.
And you complain on Polish? ;-)

I can understand your frustration. In one of the examples above, you have over-analyzed, I think:
-- To jest mój samochód. A to (jest) samochód mojej siostry.
-- To (jest) moja książka. Okładka mojej książki jest czarna.
The old primer of Polish by Falski begins with:
-- To Ala.
-- To As.
-- To As Ali.
-- A to Ola.
-- To kot.
-- To Oli kot.
As you may notice, the primer begins with possessives.
You say that misspelling of one letter in Polish is devastating. This is so in English, and these examples are authentic, I made those mistakes (and many more), in spoken English, causing puzzled looks of English speakers:
-- I was learning coast engineering. (It should have been "cost").
-- The name of our former president was Mr. Sore. (It should have been "Sour").
These mistakes were done by my German colleagues:
-- Teddy beer (bear); do you like bear (ale)?
-- There is no soup (soap) in my room!
After 4 years of learning English at liceum, the level of my English was still desperately low and I was not able to make a conversation with native English speaker. My knowledge of English has been developing for many years, mostly by practical use; still, I'm not satisfied with my English, 34 years since I started learning it. You have been learning Polish for one and half years only. Have you been living in Poland? If you had and just tried speaking with the Polish, they would automatically correct your mistakes, and you would stop thinking about the grammar problems soon. The matter is using the language, not to learn it passively.

I'm so sorry to join this thread so late, perhaps too late for the OP. OP was completely wrong. Here are the faculties in Politechnika Warszawska with mechanical engineering degrees:
1. Wydział Samochodów i Maszyn Roboczych (SiMR) = Automotive Design <-- leading in Poland
2. Wydział Mechaniczny Energetyki i Lotnictwa (MEiL) = Mechanical Engineering for Power & Aviation <-- leading in Poland in its disciplines such as piping design and of course aviation technology
3. Wydział Mechatroniki - Mechatronics (formerly Precision Mechanical Faculty) <-- leading in Poland
4. Wydział Inżynierii Produkcji - Production Engineering (formerly Mechanical Technology Faculty)
It's a pity nobody answered that at the right time.
Polytechnika Warszawska has every engineering degree besides mechanical from what I can see..
