Agreed! But I don't feel bitterness towards the Wessis for their success....I feel grateful and blessed that I can live here in freedom now....and in a way I'm glad I could be a beneficiary of their former success too. Or otherwise East Germany would still look more like Ukraine today...

It's a grudge that Germans didn't pay enough for their past crimes. They can't stomach that Germany today is such a wealthy, successful and respected country. Hence the denigration, the denial of it's success, this revelling in fantasies of it's destruction, even a dirty toilet becomes some club to try to beat Germany with...some feel Germany still has to pay, it has no right to be what it is. Believe it or not, as an East German pupil I never once was told to be ashamed of my Wehrmacht grand parents...visits in Buchenwald and personal class room talks with survivors of Ravensbrück not withstanding.
We were the anti-fascists, the good ones. We had the baddies beaten and would go on on the bright way of victory for socialism. The baddies of course sat all in West Germany! :)

I disagree, these ideologies are old news...people concentrating on these old battlefields forget to watch the future...the partitioning of the resources of this planet is already happening...in tiny steps...the future power blocs are being build as we speak...in less than 50 years from now on most of it will already done, and who hasn't has staked this claims then will be left out to look for crumbs from the big ones tables...
In Europe the EU is our best and only chance! Even Germany can't do it alone, to think that any other european country will have a vote alone is ridiculous...

But I would ask you one other thing....if so many bad things happened to Poland over the centuries, does that mean that the Poles made the wrong decisions over and over again? That at least their diplomacy and strategic planning sucks? To dumb to keep their country on the map???
And what means "resilience" to you? Being able to clean up the rubble and to avoid the errors next time which led that rubble in the first place? Or are you being proud of so much suffering and plan to repeat the same errors, eagerly awaiting the next coming destruction to show the world your "resilience"?

Yes, it is! Join the modern times...the wars of the future won't happen of some military battlefield...your famous winged husars are useless there.
In the future it won't be Poland against Germany or Russia...the lines are drawn between economical blocs, fighting over the raw resources, and the power in space, the next unknown territory waiting to be conquered and partitioned.
If you think Germany will lose but their neighbor Poland will somehow still standing as a winner...tell that the Chinese or any other of the future rivals of Europe...the blocs are already being build as we speak. They don't care about our messed up past and sensitivities one bit!!!

Those are two different things. And that's what happens in Germany. "Happiness" won't help you to win the cultural war that has started in your country. Only a strong patriotism would.

The faces frozen in a position to convey empathy and interest whereas the thoughts wander elsewhere. Nearly 70 years of these rituals do that to people. It will be worse as now the last of the true eye witnesses leave us and the whole events will now truly something for the history books only.
I don't know how to change it for the better though....
