USA, Canada / Canada Increasingly a Gateway for Undocumented Polish Immigrants Entering the U.S. [150]

For a couple of months out of the year I do.

It's obvious your opinion about this topic will be different than most of Americans who live and work here. You live and work in Poland and like you once said on PF, "what do I care" (when talking about the states) and that's why I basically I said what I said. The meaning of what you once said is not really different than what I replied to you so no need to jump up like that convex.

I disagree with "giving people land" but people coming over to find work and a life, I have no problem with that. It's the American way! We cannot forgo our tradition of letting people move here. It's the way of life here. We are a nation of immigrants, like it or not. That will never change.

Your opinion is pretty typical for the first generation Americans. You still feel like one of those immigrants so obviously you want to grant them the same rights as the ones that were granted to you not that long ago and you can't be blamed for this way of thinking but it's not how the "earlier" generations of Americans think about it.

I wouldn't mind opening up the borders.

of course you wouldn't, you don't live here.

Life / POLISH TEENAGERS TURN TO PROSTITUTION... [77]

Same reason why drug dealers wont, because working just a couple hours a day you can make hundreds of dollars, and its much less work

yep, this is the only reason. Anything else they say is nothing but a lie.

Which is why we should just let them in.

I disagree with you here. We actually have to strictly limit the immigration numbers. We can't be constantly held responsible for the welfare of the whole world. I don't mind helping others after we help each other first. 234 years should be enough to quit seeing our country as a huge "welcome everyone land" and finally see it as "our" country, one unit, united people within the United States just like it is in so many other countries (just about all of them) out there.

I know PP, but still the law will never see those people as "honest" citizens. I tend to agree with you to the point that if one lived here for a long time and proved to be a good person and never got in trouble, the person deserves a chance to stay here but it would have to be worked on a criteria of the legalization in this kind of cases.

The other's the honest people who come here to work and buy a nice house.

I understand your point but still I'm not sure about calling someone "honest" if the person lives here illegally. Somehow, the words "illegal" and "honest" don't sound right when used in the same context. (to me anyway)

As far as our system needing improvement, the US has never been that strict about immigration. In fact, this is as strict as we've been...the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. It's not in the USA's nature to punish severely people who just want to come here. That's never been part of our national character. Should we make it a part of our heritage or foster the dreams of people looking for a better life?

Don't get me wrong now, it's just a question. Your name PlasticPole is a little bit confusing because the name itself makes me understand that you're a green card holder ( association) and then you keep saying "our", "we" etc. Are you actually an American citizen already?

I only mention the word "improvement" because either we fight the illegal immigration and then we do it right or we just make everyone legal here. That's how I see it.

When I read the local paper the opinions of the journalists and their biases are the most irritating thing about it.

I don't know where you live but our local paper is doing just fine and almost every household gets it everyday. Not much about politics in it, more about current events in our community, ads etc. No one is brainwashing anyone here.

Why not just report and generate public opinion

See and here's the problem PP, you take 1000 people in your area and everyone will probably have his own opinion about things and this is why you will never be happy with what they're writing because the chance it will hit your taste is very slim. It looks different where I live because vast majority of our ancestors came to America about 400 years ago and we had more time to build a community of citizens who feel the same way in many ways. Yes, America is unfortunitely still a very divided country.

Newspapers often confuse their readers and are convoluted by the views of their employees, editors and owners. Papers should strive to be unbiased and shouldn't offer much opinion about anything.

It just depends who they represent but even if they don't represent anyone, they still have their own opinions of course. It's a same allover the world PP.

So many of them are full of opinion without much fact to back it up. I cast a jaundiced eye it's way.

yes, different people have different opinions, we do too.

The Polish translation of this article was horrible, made it sound fairly negative. They should have translated the entire article instead of plucking bits and pieces.

All this grumbling by americans here how Poles are breaking tourist visa are based on the past and is not supported by current numbers.

Just because you can't google it out, it doesn't mean that it's not supported by current numbers.

want to go to the US if he can legally work in UK etc. Another question is, why not just legally stay in Canada instead to choose to be illegal here?

I know the "technical part" of it PP. My question was more about taking the risk of being caught here and deported while in Canada or UK, they wouldn't have to worry about anything at all.

There’s nothing to argue about, what makes you think she is a bad interpreter? Did she make a blunder somewhere in her interpretation?

Of course she did. Her accent is so bad that it takes a lot of good will and great ears from an American to understand her.

How could you judge her skills or her knowledge?

It's my language.

Do you know enough Polish to even make that call?

Mysle ze tak.

Best you can hope for is to be taken as opinionated fool.

Well, if I was you, I'd probably come back with something like "it's funny but I thought the same about you" but I'll just let it go as you're unable to determine the level of my intelligence or my knowledge.

Really no need to continue our "exchange" as you already started with insults due to the lack of reasonable options.

What’s the matter? Recesion hit you so hard that you can’t afford your own interpreter?

What's the matter? Are you admitting that you can't provide any qualified interpreter? :-)

At least he would have been honest; something he’s obviously not comfortable with if that’s the case that is.

You say it now but if he did, I'm sure you'd be talking about an insult anyway.

At a press conference? Seriously listen to yourself, you’re the host!! Have you forgotten what it means to be a host?

Well, she was clearly Polish. Most likely one from Chicago and applied for that job. I bet there are much better English speaking Poles in Chicago. Whoever gave his OK for her to interpret at this meeting is to be blamed for her miserable performance and if she was a little bit more realistic about her English skills, she wouldn't be there to begin with and we wouldn't have to argue over this mishap right now.

'we are not currently in the process of having this discussion nor do not see it being revisited in the near future' would do.

Well, I don't like Obama but still, your' interpreter sucks big time and I wouldn't be surprised if Obama simply didn't understand her or most of what she said and if he didn't, his behavior was actually more than friendly because he could have just as well said that he didn't understand her and this would be probably really taken as an insult by you guys as it would point out the lack of ability to present a qualified interpreter at an important meeting like that.

Not everything that is baned by a law is a crime and you should know that!

I posted somewhere in this thread already that it is a federal crime in the US. I provided a link too.
