Life / Thinking of a move to Wroclaw, Poland [13]

5 bedroom or larger house to rent for a few years, what are the going rental rates, I haven't found much online,

five bedrooms is asking for a lot. they simply don't build 'em like that.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

has anyone noticed more posters, poster thingys stuck to railings and lamp posts.

well, in wroclaw a lot of them have been ripped/pulled down/smashed.

maybe i'll provide evidence in the form of a photo a little later.

Life / Do Polish parents let/encourage their kids to **** outdoors? [40]

if there is now a war of words the quoted post will be seen as causing it. and that equals suspension.

just in case anyone thinks of joining in they will also be suspended.

keep in mind that it will be measured in days not hours.

Work / Krakow Salaries Getting Lower? Only Kids Want Lessons?? [6]

What is going on?!

those of us who were here twenty years ago have already taught the older folk.

english language teaching in Polish schools is much better than it was. because some of us taught the teachers.

there are far too many 'native speakers' or chancers.

celta means next to nothing when it comes to private lessons.

reputation means everything.

far too many private schools all trying to undercut. and possibly using the financial situation as an excuse.

however, i do seem to have had more calls to teach youngsters. so something is changing in the sector.

The fact is that Polish english language teachers are now up to task and in some cases are able to control the market. much as Poles do the same in the uk in the building trade.

History / 1920 Battle of Warsaw - English trailer and film [55]

My class is going to the cinema in October. Other schools are planning the trip too.

when schools do that it usually means pay attention as it will somehow feature in the upcoming matura examinations.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Maybe at least someone can point me to some articles in British democratic press from years 1945-1946, which focus on the fate of Poland and the role British government played in it?

History / Resettlement after ww2 (old German houses and buildings still in Poland) [28]

Wow, so you turn up, start living in a vacant house, then register that it's yours?

not quite.

based on what i've heard: here in wroclaw germans were given minutes to leave their homes. in the case of a family home... one family from the east got downstairs, another got upstairs. these homes were still furnished... furniture back in those days was heavier and more difficult or impossible to move. some folks, if not all, were told where to live.

later, in recent years, we find examples whereby one family tried to buy out the other. as these home were entered by one entrance there are/were examples of some folk, especially on the ground floor, making it difficult for those on the floor above.

i know this to be true of some homes in the biskupin area of wroclaw.

after a couple of generations there are now some folk living in rather big houses, which to my knowledge were never paid for.

News / Has there been an influx of Polish people into Germany? [21]

I was wondering if Poles have starting moving to Germany since they lifted immigration restrictions this year?

i doubt that many have gone since restrictions were lifted... because they were there beforehand.

UK, Ireland / Grateful Polish photographer stitches up his Welsh hosts [96]

I am no expert but I stand by my assertion and would like someone to maybe indicate just 2 or 3 of those photos that are "great".

they are not great. but i do think that if the selection were narrowed down then the few would have more impact.

one or two i've looked at a couple of times, which means the photographer has my attention.

i find some of them interesting because i don't do people shots as a rule.

Law / How deep is the Gloom in the Poland's Economy [84]

I was flat-hunting a while ago, and had quite a few people saying that they simply weren't interested in negotiation. And this was in a place with a rather poor market for sellers.

i understood there was a 10% mark up by the seller, which could then be argued down by the buyer.

a bit of a pointless act, but that's how it's/was usually done.

USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

Can one get a cab near the Rynek after midnight in Wroclaw?

the answer is yes. but be careful and check the price before u get in the cab. i don't trust the cabs in plac solny.

u will have the same problem at wroclaw mainline railway station. on the side of the station that faces the bus station u should be ok. on the other side u will get scammed.

UK, Ireland / Grateful Polish photographer stitches up his Welsh hosts [96]

One could take similar photos in any developed world city if one spent five years doing it.

indeed they could.

Given the frequency I see them doing it, in five years I could have enough photos of men (and the occasional woman) pissing outside a primary school to have an exhibition.

with a sponsor, theme and audience, you have my blessing. go for it.

the occasional person using a tree for cover when relieving themselves is hardly the same as young women being found in an unconscious state in what i assume is the town centre. at least not in my book.

UK, Ireland / Grateful Polish photographer stitches up his Welsh hosts [96]

The problem comes when a person attempts to use carefully selected images to mock other people, which rather appears what the photographer is doing here.

the photographer found a theme and used it to his advantage. that's what some, if not most, photographers do.

as for the flickr selection. one realizes that the photos are not really that different from one another. half way down page two i gave up.

some well framed shots among them, good colour, sharp... and in some cases, with willing participants.

it's not the photographer who should be ashamed, it's cardiff.

Life / Could anyone tell me about any Polish bands that are/were popular. [17]

Coma is a puke

their albums are only ok, but they are a great live band. as individual musicians they are good, especially the drummer and bass player. the vocalist is above average, but also has plenty of charisma, which helps to carry the band. a lot of young women like this band or at least the vocalist. their last hit was in english and they have a new song out this week, i think.
