News / New constitution In Poland? [57]

The head of state should be above politics. States need a person who can always think on a higher level than the political one and be relied on to do what is best for the state.

Klaus in the Czech Republic was probably the best example - he held off with Lisbon until the last possible moment, but yielded to the democratic will of the people and signed the treaty. He managed to negotiate a couple of opt-outs, so he did what was best for the country.

Kaczynski was a great example of a President who did what was best for him and not the people.

That would balance the fact that the electoral system is tilted in favour of people who live in smaller towns/villages (as they are far more likely to be registered to vote than people who live in cities).

True, the hassle in Poland of voting outside your 'home' address does favour those in small towns/villages.

News / Rest in Peace Anna Walentynowicz or is it...?! [63]

Don't know about you lot, but if my mother was killed in a plane crash and then buried for a couple of years, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't recognise the end result either.

Especially a plane crash which happened at over 200km/h and upside down. If I recall rightly, they identified Maria Kaczynska by her wedding ring - which tells you how terrible the crash was.

There was absolutely no reason to kill that dreadful one-term president.

His approval ratings were down as low as 20% at the time of the crash - there was absolutely no way that he was going to win reelection. He was hated at home and abroad, he had no real influence in Poland anyway.

Life / Typical for the Poloniandists [171]

Delphiandomine, how much interaction have you had with American Polonia, other than on here?

A bit - I had an interesting interaction with one chap who was as racist as it gets. He came to Poland to "escape the blacks", constantly talked about how much money he had and how stupid Poland was for making him get a residence permit, and generally moaned and complained about absolutely everything here. He was, unsurprisingly, a medical student.

Generally speaking, they don't do too well here.

now there is a statement worthy of those "nothing but descendants of racist village peasants"! Don't you see the irony??

Yes, I fully accept being racist towards backwards village American peasants who abuse the good name of Poland for their own personal agenda. :)

Travel / Lublin ruined by arrival of Ryanair [33]

Not really, those days are more or less over. The "ruined" comment refers to Western tourists full stop - some of us like the charm of Lublin for not having them around.

Then again, if you weren't such high and mighty Polonia, you'd know that Lublin needs all the tourists it can get.

News / New constitution In Poland? [57]

-- Cut back the Sejm to 150 deputies (huge savingns of time and money)

Perhaps, but the electoral districts would be huge and would cause the disenfranchisement of smaller towns/villages as they would be incorporated into a large area.

-- Limit the Senate to 50 members for (huge savings of time and money)

PO suggested getting rid of the Senate alltogether - it doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose and acts pretty much as a rubber stamp - so removing it would make sense.

-- Slightly incresase the powers of the president, more legislative initiative, slightly mroe than now but far less than France or US

They already have the right to propose legislation, so it's hard to see what else they could do without interfering with the Sejm.

-- Synchronise state and local elections and have identical terms of office for all -- 4 or 5 years (huge savings of time and money).

There is a good argument against this - it would result in the domination of all State infrastructures if the elections were all synchronised. The current system means that parties cannot dominate.

Eliminate the second round of voting - the top vote-getter wins. An exception might be when 2 candidates are only 2 points apart, then a playoff is scheduled a fortnight later (huge savings of time and money).

No argument there, though it would be better to introduce proportional representation in a one-round vote to make sure that the winning candidate enjoys the most support. I would certainly abolish the 2nd round in mayoral elections!

Law / Child Alimony in Poland - 1700 PLN? [74]

because a child of 2.5 is not spending 1700 pln a month

Really?

Let's see - a good nursery (you only want the best for your child, right?) will cost at least 600-800zl a month in a major city in Poland.

Accommodation - you're looking at around 500zl for a room as a bare minimum in a major Polish city.
Food - another 200zl minimum.

So we're up to 1300-1500zl a month before we even start talking about buying things such as toys and clothes.

I couldn't care less if you're black, white, yellow, whatever - but 1700zl isn't unrealistic if you can buy a car for 50k PLN.

Apart from that, I think that Radio Maryja or Niezalezna.pl are one of the most reliable sources of information,

Of course, you don't actually live in Poland, nor do you have any plans to return - so really, I think we know better than you.

"I don't read/listen Radio Maryja, Niezalezna.pl because they are not reliable... why? because only the opposition voters and old people read/listen to them!!

No, we don't listen/read to such 'sources' because they've been repeatedly proven to fabricate most of what they say.

Hence why - if you want to talk about the subject, please give us some reliable sources.

Life / Typical for the Poloniandists [171]

It's just a sad fact of life that many of the so-called Polonia in America are nothing but descendants of racist village peasants from lands which we don't speak of in civilised circles. They carry on the proud traditions 100 years later, such as Jew-hating.

No doubt we can look forward to yet another Polish city being ruined by the presence of drunken fools.

Law / Child Alimony in Poland - 1700 PLN? [74]

Am I correct in assuming that this is only circa 5 grand euro per annum?

Pretty much. Not much, is it, especially when nurseries can easily be in the region of 800-1000 a month for a good one in a big city.

I knew you'd say something like that haha so predictable that it is just sad...
you have got the most reliable source on the internet right here, but "nasz klient, Nasz pan!":

Radio Maryja, reliable? Can I have some of what you're drinking?

Again - we'll discuss it when you produce an even halfway credible source.

News / Children licking cream off a Polish priest's legs "inappropriate" says NGO [116]

Yes, delph, I can agree with you. :):):):) If it depended on me, I would eradicate those customs from places. But they hold strong somehow. Tradition?

Many vile things are often done in the name of "tradition" - and there's just no excuse for it. Look at the huge problems the Russian Army has with the bullying of conscripts, or how those American fraternity organisations often do really horrible things as part of an "imitation" ceremony.

"Otrzęsiny" is normal tradition in some parts of Poland

The backwards parts, yes.

when I used to go to the Polish School in the UK we had it as well, and nobody was complaining.

You licked cream from the knees of a grown man?

News / Children licking cream off a Polish priest's legs "inappropriate" says NGO [116]

Funny how none of the people involved, or their parents see anything wrong but on PF it's a perverted act, we simply do not know enough to draw such conclusions.

I think the photo says it all - the children were involved in a degrading, humiliating act. It may not be technically illegal, but it is a severe lapse of judgement.

PS. Which I have never really approved of because I suppose not all kids like such acts. I would prefer not to see such pranks.

I don't approve of such things full stop - they can be humiliating and often are used as an excuse to bully weaker members of a group.

Law / Child Alimony in Poland - 1700 PLN? [74]

To be fair, we have no idea as to his financial situation. If he's talking about buying a 50K PLN car in cash, then 1700zl a month doesn't seem unreasonable.

Law / Child Alimony in Poland - 1700 PLN? [74]

could somebody advise what the average alimony is in Poland, and how to protest against it.

You were talking about a 50k PLN car, so you can perfectly well afford to pay 1700PLN a month for your child.

You're not going to get any sympathy on here - the child guarantees you EU residence in Poland, and some would say that 1700PLN a month is cheap for that.

Now, man up and pay, or get a DNA test done.

News / Children licking cream off a Polish priest's legs "inappropriate" says NGO [116]

It doesn't need to be banned, it just needs to be dealt with using common sense - he should be fired for showing exceptionally poor judgement.

The fact that he felt the need to submit kids to such degrading and humiliating treatment is enough. How many of those kids are going to grow up with the impression that all priests are just sick perverts?

They are - frankly - a tiny minority. They aren't Polonia, they can be called Polish.

The people we routinely ridicule on this forum don't speak Polish, they don't visit Poland, they think they know what's best for Poland and they use their "Polishness" as an excuse for some vicious racism. Your father, I assume, is none of these things.

Harry, you're taking the ****, aren't you? There's no way that this story is real...

... I'm speechless. Absolutely so.

the letter from the students, the teachers and the parents were issued, all stating that they don't see a problem.

How on earth could any educational professional not see a problem with this? For that matter, what on earth was the priest thinking?

Life / Poland and every aspect..... Please help me learn and understand the realities? [108]

Timothy Garton-Ash is very credible - he wrote a fantastic book on Solidarity that's well worth reading if you're interested in modern history.

but in Poland some resistance groups saw it as their duty to hunt down and murder Jews.

Which makes the amount of crying over the UPA so strange - if they had defended their own in modern day Ukraine rather than spending their time hunting down Jews, perhaps they would've saved some lives.

Davies is a something of a 'pop-histo' type and plays to the crowd a bit.

His book on Wroclaw is very much that, unfortunately.

Who would now pay to tarnish the image of Poland (especially when there are so many failures living in their parents basements who can't help doing it for free)?

Exactly. All they'd have to do is get in touch with some prominent Polonia types and ask them to keep going.

That old chap PolskiMoc was a fantastic example of Polonia who were hell bent on destroying the image of Poland on the internet.

Life / Poland and every aspect..... Please help me learn and understand the realities? [108]

Jan Tomasz Gross earned the deserved name of an untiring enemy of Poland and Poles (he'd feel right at home on PF!),

In your twisted, racist, disturbed mind perhaps. Most rational people see that he told a story that needed telling, no matter how unsavory the truth.

a swindler and cheat.

Strong words, especially coming from someone who routinely posts false and misleading information about many people on PF.

Few people know that many years ago the anti-Polish falsifications made by Gross began provoking strong ripostes of eminent Poles, especially those meritorious for building bridges between Poles and Jews.

Is this another one of your amazing truths that you point blank refuse to reference?

Korbonski focused his polemic on Gross's accusation of the whole Polish nation of anti-Semitism and indifference

Gross was entirely right if we talk about the II RP. Most Poles were absolutely indifferent to the laws in place at the time, such as the ones that forced Jewish children to attend compulsory Catholic religion classes.

Why would anybody want to pay somebody to tarnish the image of Poland? Who can gain from that?! And anyway, as some of the Polonia who post here show, there are so many morons who tarnish the image of Poland for free that there is no need to pay for more of them.

Exactly. Why would Russia (or anyone else) waste good money when these guys do an excellent job of portraying Poland as a backwater racist hellhole that no-one would want to work with?

UK, Ireland / Unemployed Poles in Ireland : a crash course in milking the system [323]

an education system that is not fit for purpose, a health service that is being run into the ground

Now - both of these are doing just fine in Scotland.

Probably Indian.
