Travel / Anyone here use/used Ryanair? Flying from/to Poland [31]

Thanks for your interest, however it's important to keep on the topic about the ghastly Ryanair. As for 'freedom' and 'jobs' we certainly "both enjoy the freedom to be ourselves" n Poland and have nice jobs as it is. Nice enough to be able to have a bit of flexibility about airlines. One thing about Ryainair, is that it isn't always a pleasant journey, and the flight times (same with WizzAir) aren't always great.

It's a false economy to pay 60 quid for a flight, when you've to pay another 25 quid for the luggage, a tenner for the seat and 50 quid on the train from the airport. It often works out cheaper to use a better airline that includes luggage and goes to an airport nearer your destination.

Plus the departure gates at Modlin can be a bit of a zoo, jammed full of people, some of them getting stressed and pushing.

I would put him and his business on a major tax inspection with immediate effect,

This does happen, and if you're interested, the tax authorities in Poland are wise to the tax-saving practices of airlines, especially some of the ones concerning airline food and other services.

I would also pressure the Irish authorities to do the same,

Ireland likes to be a bit of a tax haven for companies.

May is a complete joke.

All Tories are, a bad joke whose every policy has huge human cost.

News / Poland's MPs vote to demote communist-era army officers [13]

If found to be PRL member

Do you mean PZRR members? Polish citizens only.

the local militia

Do you mean policja? Milicja became policja ages ago. Most police and army are by the way not PiS supporters.

but he should not use his monopoly to put the squeeze on ANY government,

He does however have a duty to his shareholders to maximise profits. It isn't in any sense a public service; it is a money-making business, one notorious for exploiting their workers.

I've flown in and out of Poland many times with them and never had a problem.

I've used them too, however slightly prefer Wizz Air. There's also Norwegian Airlines running direct low-cost flights. I don't use them now, due to the particular routes - I tend to use Lufthansa or Germanwings, or occasionally LOT/KLM on a codeshare. It means changing, however it gets me to the right UK airports, at the right time of day, and the difference is just a few quid, especially when you factor in the various extra costs on Ryanair, like baggage, seats, boarding. Comfort is a factor too.

If you want to fly PL to UK, always check out the BA price in Business Class - there's relatively low take-up and there are occasionally real bargains.

I've actually booked a Ryanair flight (Lisbon-Warsaw) soon, due to the particular time/day they fly suiting more than the other options. I'm not looking forward to it.

UK, Ireland / 31 year old Polish man causes accident under influence of alcohol and kills 8 [198]

Poles feel collective guilt

Why would anyone feel 'collective guilt' about something as trivial as nationality? I don't feel guilty about the Ripper, and a Pole shouldn't feel guilty about drunken Polish lorry drivers.

I think there should be some tests both for British drivers entering Europe and the other way round.

For lorry drivers, yes, certainly there should be.

The difference between driving standards in Europe (for example, the low standards in Poland as evidenced by acciudent stats) is certainly a cross-border issue that needs resolving.

the same fraud you highlighted in poland also occurs in Britain

Hopefully far less. I've heard of people turning up with other people's photo ID to do it (in PL and in UK). Perhaps biometric data would help that. A friend was caught over the limit in Warsaw. Whay surprised me is that he wasn't banned - he just had to pay a fine and turn up for a session telling him not to do it.

poland accident stats are bad thats for sure.

Yes it's sad. Not long after I moved there, someone was telling me about a particular part of town (in Poznan as it happens) and said it was "45 minutes away, though a good driver can do it in 30". A better way to say it would be that it was 30 minutes away, however a good driver would do it in 45 ;-)

Too many road deaths in PL, even now - driving standards are very poor.

Love / So I got a call yesterday from those Polish teens who tried blackmailing me [22]

Very little would surprise me, though yes, that might. I'd probably find it more depressing than surprising. With hindsight, I'd rather be surprised.

I did hear of an American website called 4-something (I don't want to promote it here) that has a message board with things like that on - it seems odd that the site isn't closed down. Perhaps the authorities use it as a way to catch them.

And the question is also should UK driving licences be accepted in Poland

Very much so, not least because the UK has one of the lowest number of road deaths per million in the world. Poland has one of the highest in Europe.

I remember when I used to teach in PL, and one of my students was talking about the high number of road accidents there. When I asked him why, he replied "it's the roads". No it bloody well isn't, it's those who drive on them - if the roads are bad, people should drive more carefully.

Why so much drama, sir?

I see quite a bit of histrionics in your post, however the real issue here is the drunken lorry driver who killed an entire family, something sadly mirrored in Poland where the driving standards are very poor. It's quite an issue when poor driving is exported. Not long ago I watched a news programme on Polish TV, where, even though the procedure for driving tests has been computerised to try and reduce corruption, the undercover reporter still managed to get a price from a driving examiner for getting a licence without a test. The question is whether under those circumstances, Polish driving licences should be accepted in the UK.

Good news! All the best for you and your Polish husband.

Thanks Wulky, we do indeed have all the best.

I'm laughing

Feel free - however on an uncensored forum about somewhere, something or someone, people are going to post about issues that are headline news, whether you'd prefer they were censored or not.

Poles-are-terrible

You said that, not me (who is a Polish citizen, happily married to another Polish citizen).

However much you hate free speech, this is a pretty big news story.

Lmao!

Feel free to laugh your arse off, however this is a pretty big news item and the surviving family members of the victims, especially the 4 year old girl who lost her whole family, are probably not laughing as hard as you claim to be. Perhaps you'd prefer it if one of the drunken lorry drivers wasn't Polish.

If anyone gets killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver, the driver should be accused of murder.

Yes, that or manslaughter, and as you say, this should apply regardless of nationality and indeed it does.

UK, Ireland / 31 year old Polish man causes accident under influence of alcohol and kills 8 [198]

The court has reached a verdict:
"Ryszard Masierak, 31, was at twice the drink-drive limit and had stopped in the inside lane when he was involved in the crash with a minibus and another lorry near Newport Pagnell. He was found guilty of eight counts of causing death by dangerous driving. The jury at Reading Crown Court is still deliberating charges against the other lorry driver, David Wagstaff. Masierak was also convicted of four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after the crash last August. Wagstaff, 54, of Derwent Street, Stoke-on-Trent, denies the same charges."

Sentencing hasn't happened yet. presumably it will be a hefty one. The same for the other guy if he is found guilty.

Real Estate / Law and tenancy contracts in Poland [31]

Now Piggsy, the issue is the poster's tenancy - something that he/she has a problem with. Since the contract is unfavourable, the only recourse he may have other than putting up with it is an extra-judicial approach, something that very often rebounds on those who try...

Work / Looking for work in Poland like farming [10]

jobs that are pretty simple like farming and stuff like that :)

There's large rural unemployment in PL, and most farms are smaller than you would be used to, i.e. they can barely support the family who live there.

You can also tutor english if youre a native speaker

Not if:

I am fresh out of highschool ...... 0 college experience ....very little job experience

Perhaps better to travel after college/work, or google 'working holidays' to get a feel for what is possible.

You two are like small children

You'll notice that just one person appeared in order to post odd things.

And no, he hasn't hel;pedeither poster, one of whom (who posted 5 years ago) is in a straightforward situation, and the other (recent) one has simply signed a bad contract and should either just leave and move on (the landlord would only risk suing if his/her tax affairs regarding the property are squeaky clean) or just stay to the end of the contract.

Never, ever, sign a rental contract without a notice clause.

USA, Canada / Bought an item in Poland, shipped to the US. Help to track it. [8]

Facebook

I don't use Facebook myself, and would be very wary about buying from it or any other place with unregulated sellers. When buying online, it's better to either use a company like Amazon, or use an online marketplace who handle the payments.

About tracking, did the seller give any tracking number or proof of posting.

Hard to see how your attempts at posting help either the poster from five years ago or the recent one. Especially since the recent one seems to have signed a bad contract.

Travel / Traveling to Poland with prescription drugs [4]

It's unlikely that you'll have a problem, however to be safe, you should bring a photocopy of your prescription. If the drugs are restricted anywhere you'll be visiting, think about a letter from your doctor.

We have the same issue when we visit Dubai. We've never been asked, however my OH always carries a doctor's letter just in case.

Life / Where do artists like to live in Poland? [21]

Warsaw certainly, especially Stara Praga where there are plenty of artists' studios. Have a look at Kazimierz Dolny too - there's a small artists' community and many more who travel there on summer weekends to sell paintings.

Work / Native English looking for a teaching job in Poland [135]

(and some may even be counted as 'spent')

For work with young and vulnerable, it's generally an enhanced DBS (most people in the UK use DBS Scotland which is cheaper, easier and quicker than the England & Wales service) which includes spent convictions as well as cautions. It can even include matters (specifically formal allegations of certain serious crimes that have been made to the police) that didn't ever lead to charges as well as criminal cases that led to acquittals providing the police think it significant enough to include in the record.

In Poland, it's just the oświadczenie o niekaralności and in my experience this is rarely if ever required in Poland for ELT jobs of any sort.
