Language / What is the Polish word for "friend"? [13]

Have a Very Blessed Christmas!

And to you!

and later when I started to speak Polish heard people

How long did it take you to get to the standard where someone could speak to you at random and you could fully understand and then reply passably? Someone here said you're fluent and that you even sound Polish.

Language / What is the Polish word for "friend"? [13]

Thank you, Jon. I However, I have definitely known Poles to use it meaning friend. In fact, one used it yesterday, causing me to enquire as to who the person was exactly to them and when they explained in English I understood it to mean their friend.

People here seem to use the word colleago or something that sounds like that. Colleague in English means someone you work with. Here it seems to mean a friend or something like that in some contexts.

News / The poor and alone receive free food at Christmas in Krakow (video) [4]

Just a little video to remind as many of us as possible that whatever our religious or non-religious beliefs, not everyone has family and resources during the holiday season -- which can be a very lonely and isolating time for some members of society.

In common with many other cities, Krakow gave away free meals in the city centre/rynek today and I'm guessing will do so tomorrow and Xmas eve too. Similar happens in towns and cities in Britain, where of course foodbank use has risen dramatically across all sections of the community in the past year or two (similar in New York).

huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/11/hungry-jews-in-america-ko_n_2451278.html

One in five of the 1.7 million Jews in the New York area -- the largest Jewish community in the nation -- now live in poverty or near poverty.

huffingtonpost.co.uk/keith-taylor/food-banks-uk-economy_b_4452964.html

The region - the second richest in the UK - has seen a 60% increase in the number of people relying on emergency food handouts this year and the total number of those needing emergency food handouts is likely to hit 70,000 for the year April 2013- April 2014.

News / Poland has the most dangerous roads in Europe [34]

When driving company car, with huge well known logo on side, I'm kind of an angel, careful and kind to pedestrians

Not so of everyone. The car that roared away with a screech of tyres yesterday at Tesco, a display of appallingly bad tailgating and impatience, had some company logo emblazoned on it. If it was you, your right side headlight urgently needs adjustment as it's dazzling everyone and put some air in your tyres too!

Even if you live here, you're in the minority OR there are sufficient nutters around to render your good example much less obvious. Pretty much every time I observe traffic here I want to nick the lot of them.

News / Poland has the most dangerous roads in Europe [34]

I actually loathe driving in Poland, and wouldn't even consider buying a car here for that reason.

Ditto.

When I drive here I occasionally let other drivers who don't have priority out of their road. About a third of the time I get a thanks (about the same rate of thanks as I get when I give up my seat to an elderly person on a tram or bus).

When I walked out yesterday, I was witness to 4 near-misses:
1. A driver nearly slammed into the back of another at a traffic light queue in Bielany W.
2. A driver came across a junction on the wrong side of the road somehow, perhaps he'd left a nearby shop or house. Bus nearly smashed into him.

3. Car mounted pavement to overtake car in urban area roadworks queue that was starting to pick up speed but obviously not fast enough for him in his big new Land Rover or whatever it was. He drove like a bandit.

4. Car screeched away in Tesco car park only to have to slam its brakes on 10 metres away anyway where queues formed.

Barely a trip passes when I don't see 2 cars nearly collide at a crossroads. Tailgating and speeding and being on phones are almost every other car round here.

News / The EU's plans for Poland. [10]

Just cause you use coal doesn't mean you have to pollute. Coal can be liquified or gasified and the carbon dioxide captured. But instead of using its resources Poland chases nuclear energy (go figure).

They are doing that now in Poland, I saw it on BBC news I think.

Study / British Council CELTA in Krakow, how would you rate it? [60]

After the course, I went to Istanbul,

Did you find vacancies in Poland's main cities were few?

Shame you don't say perfect English like what I do, because I'm a native English, innit.

Basha

Basia, surely?

Jenny, you need to improve your English before you commence teaching. I know some tutors have a poor standard of English -- I've seen their ads within a popular online advertising site -- but really a person needs to be a lot more up-to-speed to have a successful career, especially now that work's thin on the ground in a lot of cities.

Love / Polish girls attitudes towards sex. [568]

As for models; have you ever seen a model without mascara and close up

This is quite so but there are some women, models or not, who are naturally good looking and ironically make up can detract from that if used.

I have been perused by the women from all corners of the globe from all races and nationalities

Pursued or merely perused? I think we should know, you unabashed Adonis!

and if we are in a group of foreigners including them, they can leave the conversation or they will just keep quite! Wierd... isnt it?

Who would've thought that women don't want to chat about their masturbation habits with men in a pub, it's incredible how shy some of them are eh!! :D

UK, Ireland / UK properties owned and rented out by by foreign landlords and taxation rises sharply [3]

Our research points out that over the last five years, the tax taken by HMRC from foreign based landlords who have rental properties in the UK has increased by 64% from £230m in 06/07 to £379m last year.

planetpropertyblog.co.uk/2013/12/16/the-number-of-foreign-landlords-with-uk-property-passes-two-million-mark/

I am confused. Anyone explain?
If a landlord is overseas or "foreign based", why is tax on rent being paid to the UK tax office? Or is tax being paid to the UK tax authorities AND the foreign based landlord's own tax authority in the country they are based in? In other words, taxed twice? And still worth doing?

I don't have any property rented out in the UK, but as a Briton in Poland would I pay tax to the UK tax office or the Poland tax office on a UK property I was renting out if I ever become the landlord of a property in the UK?

Food / The best MILK BRAND in Poland? [5]

Sorry about taking so long to post a response, but better late than never...

It's probably this one zimnemleko.com/static/mikrofiltracja_zimnemleko?lang=en

It doesn't have the characteristic smell that most Polish milk has, it has no unpleasant odour and tastes clean and fresh, like British and US milk. It's filtered, like some premium British brands are too (this might extend shelf life).

It's a little bit more expensive than some brands but comes in a glass bottle. It comes in skimmed, semi-skimmed and full fat (which in Poland is denoted by percentages of fat, semi being 2%, full being 3.2%).

Love / Polish girls attitudes towards sex. [568]

Going by what they say on this forum British dudes seems to be sorry and queer lot.

You may not realise, but queer also means homosexual.

Yes, some of us are a sorry bunch, and few of us are Clooney or Robbie lookalikes with women swooning at our feet. And yeah that can mean our knowledge is more narrow than someone who gets sheep's eyes from women at regular intervals in any branch of Biedronka in Psie Pole. But, some of my observations are definitely correct, as are most or all of Smurf's.

a belief that it was his job to meet her sexual needs, whenever they arose. So she would call him up saying she was horny and ask him to come round and sort her out. Even if he didn't feel like it, or had other things he needed to do (such as working or sleeping).

Quite inconvenient in the middle of when he was giving his sermon on a Sunday, I guess.

Polish girls are less likely to be single than say British ones,

I think so, they seem to marry much earlier, become mothers much earlier. I don't think there are many single women around after 22 or so here, not from what I've found. People do get divorced of course, but singles seem few and far between. In my experience, they're almost all married here unless total cows or last in the queue when the looks were given out. Whether they'd steal someone's man I don't know, but I'd think it no more likely than anywhere else, perhaps a little less likely because so many here are Catholic and have family pressure on them more than in some other countries, although this is not true of everybody, of course.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Some Valley Spire was delivered to some Wrocław branches this morning, so far it's selling reasonably quickly in the branch I checked (Powstancow Sl) with 40% gone already. It is odpowiedni dla wegetarian (suitable for vegetarians) thankfully. It's made by Dale of County Tyrone, N.I.

I did not spot the 3 other cheese varieties in the Deluxe range, btw. They probably sold out.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Wroc, I saw this evening in my local Lidl in Młociny once again these 3 kinds of Cheddat - not VS. Maybe some also came your way?

Thanks, yeah I know about those although not sure they have that range in again at the Lidls here (they might tomorrow). I don't really like that range although they're undoubtedly very good for what they are. I just want a normal mature cheddar (preferably vegetarian) and so am hoping for either Hatherwoods (made by Adams, UK) or VS which I think is made in good old Ireland (and probably vegetarian). Biedronkas here (checked about 10) are not selling their cheddar at the moment, but when they do the 10-month is just about OK. I can get a normal mature at Tesco sometimes or Carrefour or Auchan, but they tend to be much more expensive than Lidl, and for regular use that can be quite a difference in cost over a year. In terms of taste, however, Cathedral City mature from Tesco is probably the best if paying that sort of price. Hatherwoods from Lidl is just as good in my opinion and much cheaper, when it's available.

Currently showing a programme about prayer groups at Auschwitz, with lots of very distressing archive photos. Shame it was not on earlier in the evening before the mohair berets went to bed.

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

I want to share my experience with wizz air.I have travelled twice with wizz air to Poland since I posted in this forum.

I have never flown Wizz, but that's simply because they don't go my way at present. That will change in the future and I'm likely to give them a try.

I have flown Ryan Air, however. Staff aboard the plane are usually very pleasant. I have only once encountered someone who was less than A1, and it was probably because her boyfriend was flying as a passenger and they'd had a row or something (I saw her with him, but I am guessing as to their relationship). All Ryan Air cabin crew are seen to take flight safety very seriously, which actually is the real role of cabin crew (serving refreshments and looking friendly is not). On the ground, some Ryan Air staff seem somewhat surly, reasonably often, that's probably because their role can include getting tough with passengers who take the p with hand luggage etc.

I have also found Ryan Air to be pretty punctual. Yes, I have had 2 or 3 hour delays in the past, but it's reasonably unusual. 10-15 mins is more likely, no delay at all is the most common situation in my experience.

Btw. wonder what's with the devilish number ; )

Yeah I wondered that, too, tbh.

The one thread of hope we have is that they will eventually roll this out to Wro -- maybe one day.

OK, some Wro Lidls recently had a smallish stock of Valley Spire. Whether it's a temporary or permanent line I don't know but they are calling it nowosc as if it's a permanent line. 400g 11.99

But before you slam down the lid on your laptop and leg it to a Lidl in Wrocław, please note it's sold out at the branches I checked. There is a rumour, if I understood the lady correctly, that they might have a small box in stock this evening. But, probably that's not what she said.

I don't know if VS is vegetarian or not, as I haven't yet got my hands on a pack. I will update the thread if and when I do.

Real Estate / Housing market in Wroclaw....any info? [4]

I have no idea if it's just the ones I have kept an eye on or whether it's a reliable observation, but I'm reasonably sure the same lets that were available on my list a few months ago are still being advertised. In the case of at least 2, I know they're definitely not let. This is circa 1300/1500PLN a month.

I also note that some unfinished (ie interior not fitted out) properties in some areas have been hanging around unsold for ages (some of them for years). The prices on most have not been dropped while I've been watching them, however. The developers either have a lot of patience or understanding bankers, I guess.
