I will probably have no chance to find other way to renew my VISA!

You could just find a job.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

The Citadel park is often overlooked, but there's a lot of stuff there, not to mention very important in Polish history...and British etc.

It's actually not really that important in Polish history - much more important in Allied/German history than anything. It's the reason why the park is so neglected these days.

News / Poland's supreme administrative court rules against RHD cars [57]

Basically, can I now register my RHD car, which I've owned for over six years, in Poland?

No. It's going to go all the way to the highest European courts, which means that it will still be there for a good while yet.

News / More punch-UPS ON 11th NOV in Poland? [56]

I'll say this, whether there were over 50 000, 100 000, or 500 000, this demo has shown that Polish people are tired of the bull.

Actually - it was a disaster for them. They were claiming 200,000 would show up - for only 50,000 to turn up despite the collective organisation of Radio Maryja, PiS and Solidarity shows that the movement is simply not a viable one in Polish politics. They're trying to put a brave face on it - but it shows how utterly impotent the march actually was.

Bear in mind that the anti-Iraq War protest in London managed 750,000 in a country that doesn't even have double the population.

I just watched TVP info's Bliżej [might be available on the internet in a few days for those who do not have TVP info] and can tell you that there were a lot of people there who were not watchers of TRWAM but still, when asked why they bothered to turn up, said they do not accept the idea that some channels are not given the same privileges as others.

WP - listen. There is no such thing as privileges here - there is one simple, basic issue. TV Trwam were refused a licence, and it is believed that it is due to their financing being dependent on viewer donations. We don't know why, as the decision to release the decision is down to Rydzyk's foundation. They know why they were rejected, but they won't tell us - nor will they open their books to prove that they're financially solid (which is what they claim they are, yet they won't prove it).

It's nothing to do with privileges - you are basically believing what Rydzyk is saying without any proof whatsoever.

Some, not necessarily PiS voters either as they were young people who said they were not Kaczynski fans

There are some people who don't support Kaczynski, especially younger voters who are even more radical and believe that he isn't the answer.

said that if PiS had done 1/5 of what PO has done, the media was kill them, yet PO gets away with it.

PiS did far, far worse during their time in power. For all that PO hasn't been able to do, we remember how PiS abused the State organs (the CBA, TVP, etc) for their own political goals. The whole 4th Republic project failed as they simply didn't use power responsibly.

Many well educated people, professors and also a large amount of young people, so the 'PiS supporters are nothing but a bunch of village idiots and old babcias in mocherowe berety' stereotype is played out.

There might be a handful, but the statistics speak for themselves - the educated vote PO/PSL/RP/SLD, the uneducated - PiS.

If you saw the last march you might note that nothing was smashed up, it was done in a very orderly fashion. In fact it was done so well that even the PiS political opposition praised it [as far as organization goes].

I think the organisers realised, wisely, that if they resorted to violence (although they did - the attack on the Polsat crew was an example) - then they might find themselves under increased scrutiny in the future. But don't forget - this march also had no "patriotic nationalist" involvement too. For all the sins of Radio Maryja, PiS and Solidarity - none of them attract young people who like violence.

Not only that but there were obviously no provokers sent in this time to draw out an aggressive reaction and start a fight. PO forgot?

Sent in? Do you know any anarchist/far left wing groups? I'm friends with a couple - and I assure you that these people will go and fight regardless. They don't need to be 'sent in' - they want to fight far-right extreme nationalists regardless.

(I'm also friends with a couple of hooligans, who openly admit that they like to fight with anarchists)

History / Why did the PRL keep many symbols of Poland's 2nd Republic? [12]

When i found that out, i was surprised that the communists simply didn't change everything.

I'm even more surprised now!

But then again - the cult of Pilsudski was so immense that perhaps they wouldn't wanted to have messed with such a thing anyway.

Second question :

After the end of the PZPR in January 1990 - what happened to the former PZPR members in the Sejm? Did they form new political parties, or just sit as independents in the Sejm until the next election?

News / More punch-UPS ON 11th NOV in Poland? [56]

All will be fine if the Antifa creeps and other troublemakers don't interfere.

So you want to have the right to march, but not to allow the right of others to protest?

How democratic, Polonius.

We expect Delph to be marching up frotn with a flag embazoned with St Andrew's cross.

"We"?

Are you openly affiliating yourself to this march?

News / More punch-UPS ON 11th NOV in Poland? [56]

Great, we can look forward to Independence Day being hijacked yet again by a bunch of far right morons who think that they are true patriots while smashing up Warsaw.

I can't wait.

A PiS, Solidarity and Radio Maryja march in late September attracted an estimated up to 100,000 demonstrators

Lying again, Polonius? Police estimated 50,000 - nowhere near 100,000.

Footies fans and natioanlsit youth groups will most likely spring to their defence.

Ah yes, football hooligans fighting on the streets of Warsaw, and you encourage this?

If it goes ahead, it'll be another embarrassment to the country that allows such dodgy marches to take place on a day that should be a celebration. Meanwhile, ordinary people start associating Nov. 11th with football fans fighting in Warsaw.

In household linked with per-war middle class, not true.

Ironside speaks the truth here - I've heard the same thing from many people of pre-war middle class origins.

For me, I do it because it's more comfortable - but expecting people to do it is absurd.

Well, that's obviously bullshit

Total bullshit, Sundays are days to go to the shopping centre and scream at your children because they don't behave like perfect angels.

Study / Comming to Poland Soon.. interested in medicine studies [6]

The vast majority of Med students in Kato are Canadian & Asian so I presume they just head home after finishing their courses and get job.

It's a lot to do with the quality of the courses - it's an open secret that you can just buy your education in Poland in medical school because the international students contribute so much cash to the university - and the universities don't pay the teachers anything extra.

ZELEMER products are rated quite high in Poland.

They're not bad products at all - I've got some of their products too.

Another company that really could do well if they actually tried to export their stuff.

History / Why did the PRL keep many symbols of Poland's 2nd Republic? [12]

As someone who has a keen interest in Polish history and politics - I have some questions that I can't answer easily.

1. Why did the PRL keep (or alter only slightly) many symbols of the 2nd Republic? I mean - for instance - the eagle (without the crown), the flag, the anthem? Was it to prove legitimacy as the real Polish state?

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

and since 2004 because of Poland's joining the UE, all high officials have to learn it.

Not true. They're expected to know English and one other - and German is far more popular than French at this level.

As to the UE, French is necessary (commission in Brussels, parliament in Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg, court of justice in Strasbourg) and whether you like it or not, I can assure you that high officials in Poland do learn French.

Some might, but by all accounts, French is starting to lose badly in the EU since the expansion east. English and German are winning that particular linguistic war - ask yourself, what languages do the top politicians speak? French is pretty much unheard of.

And this is coming from someone who likes and studied the French language.

French will always be relevant, but it simply isn't as important as it once was.

Life / Fake goods in Poland [42]

I mean, me as a complete amateur would not buy anything on a parking.

Actually - that's the problem. I wouldn't because my technical knowledge is useless when it comes to this sort of thing, but someone who has a clue might easily be swayed.

who couldn't get on the flight because of the load restrictions

This would've raised an eyebrow with me - who would assume that they could turn up at the airport and load a bunch of equipment like that without arranging it in advance?

But - even at the airport - he could just organise with LOT to transport it as cargo to the destination. That's what would've made me suspicious.

Why would you even care? His life, his choices. Outside of Warsaw is not so prosperous either.

I'm curious more than anything - the culture shock of living in a village after coming from the UK would be...well, immense.

Life / Is the 1st of November a work-free holiday in Poland? [12]

Delph, I see nothing wrong in a long weekend...Good that we have them.

Depends really - this one in particular just seems to attract carnage, though at least it means that it's more spread out and the nutters won't be rushing back to work for the 2nd.

But as Delph was writing - there is the usual carnage on the road...A lot of nutcases want to be included in the the next 01-11....

I just don't understand it. Why would anyone want to drive like a lunatic during this time? As for the drinking and driving - there is nothing to say except that these people are really braindead morons. It's even worse when you see people caught with their families in the car - why?!

It's absolutely indefensible - and anyone who lets their relative take the wheel after drinking is equally responsible. I'm forever shocked at the amount of women who condone drinking and driving.

None of them are particularly good - they are known as diploma mills for a good reason.

Jimon - the medical profession in Poland knows that the English language programmes are a total joke. If you graduate one of them, you're not going to find work in Poland - no-one will touch you with a bargepole.

News / PiS-PSL-LPR? [23]

that's why PSL is like a prostitute, the "can" with everyone If the price is ok.

And do you think that coalition with PiS (thereby putting them firmly into 'those nutters' camp) would be worth it for them?

Pawlak's not an idiot - his party is small and can't afford to do an LPR in power - hence why it's better to enter coalitions with inoffensive parties rather than radical ones. Do you even think they could coexist with PiS, really? Their supporters have little to nothing in common with PiS supporters, after all (unlike the 2005-2007 Government).

That's why they were forming the gov with SLD twice and now "do it" with PO, the party they had nothing to do with before 2005.

The benefits of being a centrist party. The difference between PO and the SLD is hardly that big anyway.

But Warsaw Insider is even worse.

The worst of the lot is The Visitor - it's all based upon paid-for content.

Also, they should really update their texts.

Yes - for a long time, the Poznan edition had many pubs/restaurants that simply didn't exist anymore.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Unfortunately, Lech Premium tastes like crap in many bars because they don't know how to store/serve it properly. There used to be a place called Estadio in Poznan that got it bang on every single time - but it closed, unfortunately.

Lech Pils is a good beer though - good out of both bottles and on the tap. I've got the feeling that they're about to go national with it, too.

But really - why bother with big name beers such as Lech (although Lech Pils is grand) when you can drink much better stuff for the same price? Heck - there are plenty of decent regional beers available for the same price as Lech Premium.

If you're in Poznan - Setka, Ministerstwo Browaru and Cooliozum all have a cracking selection of Polish beers.

The problem with IYP seems to be that it can't make up its mind as to who it is really for.

I've heard of "taking the long view" in politics, but well - you're going to be waiting a long long time!

Wouldn't it just be better to accept that PiS needs to change and that using insults like "showcase homosexual" guarantees political wilderness?

News / PiS-PSL-LPR? [23]

But the average Polish farmer is deifnitely right of centre.

But the PSL voters are not small farmers - they are either wealthy farmers or town dwellers. The real rural village peasant vote belongs very much to PiS.

Too bad the PO-PiS project never materialised due to PO pigheadedness.

What, you mean refusing to agree to a situation where all three "power" ministries were in the hands of PiS?

Although PO came second, Kaczyński generously offered them as many ministries as PiS. but they still hummed nad hawed.

Nothing to do with being generous - PiS needed PO far more than PO needed PiS at that time. It was actually always in PO's interest to watch PiS make a mess of things.

Then PO wanted coalition talks broadcast live on TV and they were and naturalłly fell through. Nobody in the world negotiates on camera.

Again - savvy public relations. PO had nothing to lose and PiS had everything to lose.

At any rate, in a PO-PiS government Jarek's lads could have kept a close watch on the Tuskites to make sure they toed the line.

And there you have the exact reason why the coalition couldn't happen. Too much lust for power on behalf of PiS was never going to agree with the liberal conservatives of PO.

Please don't try and distort reality - PiS wanted power to implement their 4th Republic project and PO weren't willing to let them have it. Therefore - no deal.

News / PiS-PSL-LPR? [23]

Perhaps you would like to illustrate why Pawlak would ruin his electoral base for the sake of short term power in an unstable coalition with a leader who had already illustrated how he wanted control of all the relevant "power' ministries?

Then again, it's irrelevant - as I already said, such a coalition would be 17 seats short of a majority and would have to rely on Lepper regardless.
