Life / You are Polish if... [433]

The wink marks show I'm kidding but you are clearly defensive. Impolite? That's absurd as I'm anything but.

I'm not here to seriously point out mistakes as I'm a guest in this country. I have received super hospitality and have good friends here. There is mutual respect with most of my students.

So, please cut the crap and start lightening up. Look at the thread anyway. You can only TRULY say one or 2 answers in response. Most don't do quite a few of the things above.

I rarely have need to comment on those other countries here.

Love / How to seduce Polish girls: Tips and advice [118]

I guess some rubbing and delicate flicking around the neck would work in many cases. Little circular movements of going across the back is nice.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Some have progressed to the 1990's, don't worry ;) ;)

Some hate and some don't.

At least some of us can be polite and modest, Marqoz ;0 ;) The Never Wrong brigade struggle with that.

you sometimes sound like you are singing when you are talking

you sound like you are at a Mickie Mouse audition. (high-pitched women)

We prefer to see it as thrifty. Go to Poznań and Kraków and you'll find stingy people :)

It beats me why people don't comment on useful things like this, instead preferring to focus on absolute guff.

you walk into a shop and ask the shop assistant 3 questions whilst she is already serving sb.

you stand right behind sb in a shop, perhaps to hurry them up

you can't seem to deal with sb not having the right change. This gets my goat as I always try to help them to the exact grosz. On those occasions where I can't, I get a humph as if it was my fault.

Law / "FART" shop in Poland - WHAT DOES THIS SHOP SELL? [55]

I need to cycle out and copy the Manko billboard sign. Manko is a vulgar word for pu*sy in Japanese! It's a building contractor :)

Other ones are Fuk Mi and Willie Shafters :)

In my home city, we have the Flare&Firkin who made 'Firkin good meals'. The motto had to go.

Language / Dzięki temu...... ? [8]

I'd say 'thanks to that' and not 'thanks for that'. Dzięki za coś is thanks for that.

Ah yes, good old editing :)

The old 'never accept blame' idea that runs through the culture :(

Heap it on and make it optional so the ball is in their court

I just shrug in such cases. It's not a race and quality is more important than quantity. I'm sure that my second school expects tests with 1-2-1 student but it ain't gonna happen.

There's nothing worse than ill-defined objectives.

LOL, just tell them it's hunters' stew.

That's a valid point too. Too much homework :( It's optional at the school I teach at so ok.

Yeah, but God help them if the one they copy from is dumb :)

LOL, the first one is funny

Exactly, kluski are more like dumplings

Yeah, talk about being out of touch

if...your life is so boring that all you can talk about is cabbage, Małysz and vodka. Oh yes, and that famed 'Polish spirit' (aka, complaining about the war 70 years ago)

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

Lord Carrington was quite favourable towards the Serbs, Crow. It was Vance-Owen that went wrong at Athens as Mladic got angry.

Anyway, the Poles have woken up lazy Brits and that's a plus for Brits. So many are claiming benefits and are living too leisurely. The Poles took some jobs and I applaud that.

Well, Britain did sth for Serbia today as they arrested Ejup Ganic, that Bosnian who tried to get Izetbegovic back from Sarajevo airport and killer of people. Still waiting for TIT's contribution.

Trotter is TIT. So, TIT, what did you do for us? Sweep the dust neatly back into place? Rearrange some soil in colour-coded fashion? Put M&M's in alphabetical order? Put the price stickers that had fallen off back on? Pick up individual grains of rice from shop floors?

Come on, give us a laugh :)

You couldn't fight your way out of a paper bag, Trotter. What did you do in GB, change lightbulbs? Were you on call for that? How about picking up dog turd which dog owners left behind? How about the dogs? ;) Did you chase paper bags on windy days? Did you take the money for use of public toilets? I'm intrigued now! Go on, what did this Pole do for us? :)

Don't get me wrong, I don't see it everywhere. Many queue correctly and don't firmly brush by you in the streets. I just see many tense people which makes me appreciate the nice, laid-back Polish people that I know.

Ironside, you misinterpreted me. I was clearly trying to say that the insinuation of washing him 'clean' is there for all to see. I don't want to second guess him but you err on the side of caution in such cases. Many people who read that would likely say that he needn't have said sth like that at all. I judge by people, not by skin colour. I've met and liked people who were white, brown, yellow and black. I can just sense racist undertones/overcurrents in writing. It's not like I'm consciously looking for sth that isn't there.

Trevek, I hear ya. In Scotland, quite a few people want their own seats but I've noticed that, in Polish buses, they sit 1 to a chair of 2 throughout the bus and others stand.

News / Should 16-year-olds in Poland vote? [58]

I think we need to narrow the parameters and remind ourselves that we are focussing on Poland where the demographic is different. They leave school when they are 19 and that is different from other countries like the UK. Beelzebub, you lived in Poland and likely experienced Polish teenagers. Were you a teacher? I can safely say that the average 16-year old here could understand if they had it explained to them through schooling and parenting. You talk about/of maturity and experience! OK, pick a professor, doctor or lawyer from any country in the world that speaks poor English. Let's say they are 50. Try and explain in English to sb who doesn't understand high-faluted or jargonistic language and see how far you get. You have to coin language and frame things in a way that they understand and is meaningful to them. It's the same with 16-year olds who haven't been through university but understand what was taught to them in Civic Studies or Modern Studies or whatever other curricula from around the world call it.

Beelzebub, what runs through your mind in the days and maybe weeks before casting your vote? Do you really labour on the issues so much? What do you do when you can't reconcile different positions on different issues? (PO is good on one point, PiS on another and SLD on yet another) What if, like me, you can see the merits in different policies in different areas, as with religion? Do you rigidly cling to your chosen label or do you attempt to see the sheer variety of options and make a decision thereof? 16-year olds don't play adult games like tactical voting. They go with what is good for them and perhaps with the party that doesn't spell danger like Bush did.
