News / What do PO voters expect from the new Polish government ? [32]

What do PO voters expect? More of the same, I'd say. Surely expediting the building of roads. A modification of toll charges for using motorways for those that have to use the roads often. That has emerged from some discussions I've had with PO voters.

Study / The worst of Polish education. No wonder Polish universities are bottom of the list. [142]

Referring directly to the OP, I can confirm that it happens. Most of my private students have told me as much. As for polonthemeds, feast your eyes on this

4icu.org/topEurope/, the top 100 universities in Europe. 4 of the top 10 are in the UK (1,2, 4 and 6). Poland's entries? 78 and 100. Any comment?

History / Why have Poles contributed so little to Academics? (Particularly Science) [180]

Polonthemeds, Copernicus was NOT fully Polish and that's just a fact. Neither was he fully German for those that claim he was.

Nobody has mentioned the great Jan Miodek. He has really raised the profile of Polish philology and linguistics. A deep thinker with an analytical mind.

Language / Kurwa? at end of every sentence [51]

I really don't hear it much these days. It obviously can be heard on the streets and in pubs but it's not sth I pick up on these days.

Language / Kurwa? at end of every sentence [51]

It's all about time and place. For example, I was at a post-baptism meal today and no-one ever got close to saying it. It wouldn't have been fitting. It's more for football stadiums.

News / Poland's 'oburzeni' (indignant)? [41]

There are success stories in many places, delph, but I know many more people who haven't been afforded the opportunities that she has had. It's the same in Scotland.

News / Poland's 'oburzeni' (indignant)? [41]

Good people get good contracts? Hmm....to a point, yes. I'm not entirely convinced of that.

It's not for them to back, delph. It's for people to make a stand and they may well do that in due course.

Point taken about papers. Geez, they really overplay the importance of them here.

News / Poland's 'oburzeni' (indignant)? [41]

Good thread, Pol3. Many young Poles are disillsioned with the lack of opportunities they have. It's the same in Scotland where too many people are chasing too few jobs and it will lead to social unrest. Dishonesty is in many places and is a bit like negotorium gestio in legal affairs.

Travel / Tips/suggestions/do's and don't of going to Poland....? [55]

You should also be very careful with quite a few women. They'll trip you up and catch you out at the first occasion they can get. There's a lot of dissatisfaction here amongst many, even the young ones. So don't get too close.

Another tip would be to share candid observations only with trusted confidantes/friends. Most Poles tend not to take well to criticism one iota (let's call it an underdeveloped sense of constructive criticism) so your negative experience sharing will not go down well with the majority here. There are some who will give you the time of day but many just don't want to know.

That would be a very unnecessary and American government thing to do. I'd like to think that I don't cause that kind of harm ;)

In Poland, you shouldn't be too showy in most places. Many Poles tend not to like it. I mean loud and attention seeking.

Oh, don't carelessly drop bread. It's ok to feed it to the birds on occasion but, even then, expect the odd disapproving look from a mohair beret faithful ;) Bread is like gold for many people here.

Do be sure not to hold doors open for people as it's not appreciated 90% of the time.

Love / Why are Varsovian women so uninteresting? [23]

I've heard the same thing as the OP mentioned but I can't really comment as I've only really once been in Warsaw for any appreciable length of time.

Law / What are chances for Poland to join in Eurasian Economic Community? [100]

The next KGB man should step up? ;)

Tusk likes his own power too much to be pushed around but he has shown himself to be a lapdog. He did emphasise in the pre-election build-up that he wants closer ties with Russia and that's quite a statement considering the wrangles over Smoleńsk etc etc.

Poland will not put itself in a position where it can be bullied by Russia. Timoshenko got caught up in Russian pipeline politics and look where she ended up. She is to serve a 7-year prison sentence. Best keep Russia 'onside' but at arm's length.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

No, jak chcesz :) Sorry, if you wish :)

Languages is evolution and I welcome communication. Out with the puritans. I dislike when some old hags here gape at me when I speak English with my Polish friends (who want me to use it). I just start speaking Polish for a bit and then they hop it. Ah, the presumptions.
