UK, Ireland / 31 year old Polish man causes accident under influence of alcohol and kills 8 [198]

you own yard stick

The law. Sentencing follows the crimes people are guilty of within a very prescribed framework

I mean if that would have happened

If, if, if....
An entire family were killed, the evidence was presented in court, those guilty were sentenced according to the severity of their crimes.

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

If he doesn't get a wall built or stop foreign neocon military meddling or coddling banking interests he will be a one term president

It looks likely there's still plenty of scandal to come about electoral manipulation. The investigation about Russian involvement is still far from finished.

Obama

History will remember him very well.

The orange wh0remonger of mar del lago - he's already their worst in history. He will remain so for centuries hopefully; the only way one could be worse is by pressing the red button.

Travel / Two Older Polish American Sisters to visit Poland 1st Time [29]

Also just discovered Hipmunk.

I'll have a look at this one; thanks for the tip. I find gotogate is ok, as is Kiwi. It's best to be be careful, especially with ones based in Russia. I've usually been lucky; the only ones I've had problems with were budgetair (who sorted it out in the end after I found their real (not helpline) phone number and Expedia (who I will never use again).

Sometimes I think that flight bookings take up too much of my time (due to work matters) although it's sometimes fun to find interesting routes to where you're going. In April, I've actually got 10 flights booked already and may need to make a couple more work journeys. It would be easier if I grew wings ;-)

At least there's airmiles...

Life / Wroclaw - club scene [16]

young

The young (or young-ish) have an advantage if they want to find something in a club; namely they're more or less the same peer group as the rest of the clubbers (do they still have posses?). I have certainly seen outgoing older peoplel ask about stuff in clubs, however they may need to be persistent, especially if they look like a) someone's Dad, b) a College Principal or c) an off-duty Detective Chief Inspector :-D

Wortrh mentioning that the quality isn't usually that great in PL (very much a drinking culture), though very occasionally people can strike lucky.

Oh,and into drugs........

Plenty of posts admitting that, however being a young suburban stoner is one thing, actually knowing what you're talking about is another.

Life / Wroclaw - club scene [16]

ighting outside of the club is rather common in wroclaw as people are leaving the clubs.

Not especially in the kind of clubs where you find decent chemicals. That's more the lager, shaved head and dancing round the handbag places.

Law / Payment of ZUS/ Income Tax - 'sole trading' business in Poland [27]

Even if your accountant does the maths, you need to pay it

This is true. And accountants (księgowi are bookkeepers really, not usually accountants) don't always get it right. I have experience of this.

And no, KRUS is not superior to ZUS ...

You are right, it is definitely not superior. ZUS is better. And KRUS are cracking down at the moment on people who pretend to be farmers. This happened to my friend who had been paying KRUS for years on the basis of owning a few hectares that he rented out. One slip on his part and they investigated all his relatives who were doung the same thing too.

Life / Wroclaw - club scene [16]

Thanks Jon I will have a look. Cheers

Just a tip. Consume it in the club, don't take any home; the police do stop people, do search, and the legal environment in PL is not a good one.

Every big city in PL has at least one club that's got a bit of a reputation, however the economy means that most young people can't afford to buy stuff.

Life / Wroclaw - club scene [16]

Basically studenty clubs, the more edgy the better. Don't be afraid to ask twice.

Remember, that in Poland they say Dyskoteka for night club. The phrase 'klub nocny' (a direct translation of the words night club) can often mean a clip joint or knocking shop).

History / Jan Potocki On Ancient Slavic History. [6]

Equally, why not? This other film was back in the mid-60s.

Anyway, the latest film (currently showing at the festival in Venice) isn't a direct adaptation, and is very very good.

History / Jan Potocki On Ancient Slavic History. [6]

Merged:

Count Jan Potocki - new film based on Polish novel

There's a new film out, based largely on 'The manuscript found in Saragossa' by the Polish writer Count Jan Potocki (1761-1815). The film's in Italian (available with English subtitles) and is very worth watching. The novel it's based on is good too.

Potocki, incidentally, was the first person in Poland to fly.

Life / Retiring in Poland [39]

Free healthcare in Poland too, TV licence and bus pass - wow, that's not much, and housing benefit doesn't let you live in comfort.

Living on starvation benefits certainly doesn't let you "screw the bejesus out of the UK taxpayers and benefits system."

Buss pass indeed!

Are you also planning a return to the UK when you retire?

No, though we might do part of the year there. Poland is home now. Fortunately I've kept up with UK NI, for what that's worth.

Dolno, you don't get the pension if you haven't paid in. If you are abroad, you can choose to pay in so you can get a pension. Otherwise it's limited (and on a pro-rate basis) according to the years you actually did pay in.

Love / How easy is it to pick up a girl from a club/bar in Warsaw ? [65]

Im not really the chasing type, so I just visited neworleans.pl/ strip club in Warsaw

The word in Polish is onanista

I say it worth checking.

If you fancy throwing away a shocking amount of money for something seedy and unsatisfying.

You can get a real woman for the night for a fraction of the price. There's usually some soliciting round ul.Poznanska.

Travel / Two Older Polish American Sisters to visit Poland 1st Time [29]

Thes are all from 11th May.

The first, for £89 is Prague to Gdansk. It's quite a long layover in Krakow (enough time to go out of the airport for a walk and lunch somewhere). There are other options, with different timings and prices.

The second for £57 has an earlier arrival time but longer layover.

The third one for £34 is just from Prague to Krakow. There are several possibilities to fly on to Gdansk etc directly and cheaply all through that week.

History / Is there a Western/Eastern divide in Poland like the Northern/Southern divide in Italy? [38]

they are not very religious, nor backwoods

Statistics show otherwise. That region has areas with a lower educational attainment, a lower life expectancy , a higher church attendance and a lower average income than other parts of PL.

your commie standard

You mean yours, given your PZPR background.

Kashubians

As Gunther Grass (himself part Kaszub) wrote, they were once considered "too Polish for the Germans and too German for the Polish"

History / Is there a Western/Eastern divide in Poland like the Northern/Southern divide in Italy? [38]

(but it's tricky since Warsaw, the most 'advanced' city in Poland is located on the Eastern side ;)

Quite. As Rome is towards the south.

the biggest differences in Poland are traced to the partitions

Still quite a lot of effects from the partition years, even now.

It isn't black and white though; inhabitants from the easternmost areas of pre-war Poland were moved westward; some parts of North-West Poland where there was a strong presence of PGRs (collective farms) are today still among the most backward, impoverished and religious areas in the country.

You can fly with LOT, the Polish airline, to Gdańsk, but the flights weren't that cheap when I looked at them

It's possible (they'd need to book on something like Momondo.com that searches for flights from multiple airlines and combines them) to fly Czech Airlines (usualy cheap) from Prague to Warsaw, and then Warsaw to Gdansk on LOT (sometimes for under £30 if you book well in advance).

If they don't mind changing planes in Warsaw Okecie (one of the easiest, smallest scale and most comfortable airports I know for transfers) they could do it inexpensively and comfortably. Certainly cheaper and a lot quicker than going by train from Prague to Gdansk, a 12 hour journey involving at least one change.

It could be a good idea if they look on momondo.com (this is the one I usually use - there are other similar ones like kiwi.com and Alternative Airlines - and it's often worth checking several) for that route on those days, just to get an idea of prices.

Travel / Anyone here use/used Ryanair? Flying from/to Poland [31]

Modlin sucks for those unfortunate enough to be in Warsaw

If you're in Bielany or Białołeka it can actually be better, especially in the rush hour.

Re. baggage and travelling light, so,Times you can, sometimes you can't. I usually travel light, however it isn't always possible, depending on your length of trip and reason for flying.

Travel / Anyone here use/used Ryanair? Flying from/to Poland [31]

when I'm on vacation I don't want to be bothered with those little details, better to just pay it once and then not worry about that stupid stuff.

Spot on. Ryanair/Wizzair can somertimes be a false economy.

Modlin is an overcrowded kip

A riot waiting to happen.

The squalor and rapaciousness of Ryanair just adds to that.

I would not be surprised that an accident occurs one day due to their poor staff policies.

I think they're well enough trained, however yes, one day something will happen.

The last time I used Modlin, the gate was absolutely jammed, and a guy started yelling at me for 'jumping the queue' - in fact I had a priority boarding and was making my way to that queue. He did look apologetic when he saw my boarding pass. I noticed other people getting noticably agitated that day as well.

This is a problem, there are travellers there who aree already stressed (often flying as families and not at all frequent flyers who take things in their stride), all jammed in to a tiny space, stressed by all the queues and delays and the temperature rising due to the sheer number of bodies squashed in there. One day something bad will happen there, if it hasn't already.
