Food / Is Polish food still more natural than in the West? [142]

I order the $1.00 side salad, with reduced-fat vinaigrette dressing

Yeah, their salads are good. Their fries used to be great but then they went and changed (under political pressure) the oil they cook them in to something more healthy. Now they aren't nearly as good. Damn healthy... The whole idea behind fast food to to not eat healthy for one night! :p

3 zł for a cheeseburger-----I gues there is no meat in it for that price.

McD has a good double cheeseburgers for a dollar (approx 3zł) over here. They have an entire Dollar Menu. One can feed their entire family for a few bucks.

now that Poland is a free enterprise country, more fast food restaurants are opening up and more Poles are finding it easier to buy ready made food than cook.

An easy trap to fall into. Be careful or else you'll all get fat and unhealthy like us. Just takes a little personal responsibility...

Genealogy / Polish nationality? Which of the following (if any) determine being Polish. [231]

Some people like to pick and choose. Do what you enjoy, no need to stick to your group.

instead of identifying with one or the other

I think it human nature to want to identify with a particular group.
From caveman times for survival, up to today, right here on PF where many insist on self-dividing into national and ethnic camps.

Food / Electric Grilling - I highly recommend it :) [30]

a soda can alcohol stove

That's like an old school survival stove. Survial tips called for always having a tin can with you when in the wilderness, just in case...

Do you guys have regular old commercial charcoal briquettes in P-Land? Kingsford? Matchlight?
I recently found this "natural" charcoal [brand?]. It comes in a big bag like the other but instead of being little preformed bricks it's real pieces of chard wood. You can see the wood grain and growth rings in some of the pieces. It works well, lights easier and makes a good taste on the food.

Off-Topic / Does anyone else find Cygans fascinating? [60]

in france, many towns give gypsies land for their "campgrounds" just outside towns and villages.. that way they don't have to squat just wherever.. i think that's pretty cool

Well, this hardly solves the associated problems of them stealing from locals, etc. And sometimes the land the government permits them on is private land. This is hardly right and has been a source of a lot of the friction.

While maybe that is official policy, what we're seeing is the citizens rising up and declaring they are sick and tired of the gypsy loser criminals infiltrating their communities and the government accommodating them. One can hardly blame towns folks from feeling this way. It sounds much like our illegal alien problems out West where criminal illegals are running rampant and overrunning towns while our government does little more than let them...

Food / Electric Grilling - I highly recommend it :) [30]

The summer is almost over and the two of you are heavy into a grilling discussion.

I grill all year round. Not as much in the cold weather but I've been out there with snow falling. :)

I don't think I know anyone who does not like the BBQ flavor.

It is yummy. Something so outdoorsy and primal about it. Grilling has grown in popularity in the past decade. I think before it was viewed as hick-ish. When I was a kid we'd barbecue but none of my friends parents did. Now everyone does it and grill prices go up into the thousand$.

People do amazing stuff on the grill

My grill came with this cookbook with all kinda crazy ideas. I've never tried anything too serious, though, like a good roast or a whole turkey.

It starts the coal evenly and in about 10 minutes you dump it in the grill and go!

No, I never saw that before. It looks like this survival cooker I knew someone who had one once. It was hollow like that with a grill on top. He claimed he could thoroughly cook a burger in five minutes using nothing more than two pieces of newspaper. We thought he was crazy, but damned if it didn't work like he said. I guess it worked by concentrating all of the newspaper's energy... every bit of heat had to go up and past the meat.

Do you use a charcoal chimney to get them started? I refuse to use lighter fluid all you need is 2 pieces of newspaper with the chimney.

I don't know what this is. I've heard of people using fire starters like you might use in your fireplace, but I wouldn't want to add those chemicals to my food. I just use some newspaper, some small wood scraps and a little charcoal lighter fluid. Once the wood ignites it keeps the charcoals burning.

they look like those aluminum baking pans,,lol

Little hybachis. (sp)

still not a speckle of rust

This is because the Webs have a quality baked enamel finish and not just heat resistant paint.

Are you talking about the Weber "smokey Joe" ? I have one of those also.

That's what I have. The classic Weber grill... round... black...

Maybe there is a little charcoal taste sacrifice, but not enough to deal with the mess!

Not worth the sacrifice! And no mess, really... I just dump the ashes in my garden. It's good for the soil and keeps away garden pests.

I used to have a gas grill and got rid of it. You always run out of gas when the store is closed... and the little gas tubes always got clogged with spider webs. Bah...

I'm talking about the cheap-o $3.99 Wal-Mart specials. Use the grill a few times & out it goes

I've had them too. They work great too, especially for camping or the beach. And when they die you just chuck em.

Makes the best BBQ chicken and corn on the cob, in the world!

Indeed! C on the C is great on the grill. I can cook just about anything on my old grill, from meat and veggies to sides to frozen pizza...

Also adds a nice atmosphere and ambiance to an outdoor gathering.

For this reason too! Nothing beats a good old smoky grill...

Love / Polish girls hard in relationships [156]

Don't laugh, being so self aware is good. It puts you ahead of the game compared to many others.

He almost kinda resented it, I thought it was strange.

Just as many here rip on you for the very same reason. ;)

Life / INVISIBLE MAN in shops and offices in Poland? [70]

I don't think you're being overly sensitive.

Do you suspect this was a case of nationalism; the guy saw you as a foreigner and elected to disregard you while taking care of his fellow Polish peeps?

If this is the case then you should go back to the store night after night and keep throwing chips and leaving without buying until he gets the hint. Or you can alert the store owner that his employee is losing him business.

Life / INVISIBLE MAN in shops and offices in Poland? [70]

I think he might have begun to notice me when the crisps and chocolate went flying over his head and landed on the floor behind him , but it was too late then , i was on my way out of the door....

Good for you. That's one way to handle it.

I still use old fashioned charcoal and wood chips. I prefer the smoky flavor this sort of grilling gives meats. And it's a cheap way to go.

Genealogy / Polish nationality? Which of the following (if any) determine being Polish. [231]

Well in my example there was no Polish blood at all.
And others here have said that merely being born in Poland doesn't automatically come with citizenship the way it does over here.

it's like native Americans. They identify themselves as Americans but have their own sovereign nation within the US. Same with Polish Americans. We are the Polish nation within America.

Seems more an expression of pride in heritage than anything real.

I have been observing gypsies lately here in poland and I have to say I am "fascinated" by their laziness, dirtiness, and ummmm uselessness..

They sound just like our gypsies! Only ours aren't Indian. Maybe our druggie hippie losers are just imitating the real kind...

They are know to afflict with evil eye.

Here's one. Just look at it sitting there, being all evil! -----------------> I

Genealogy / Polish nationality? Which of the following (if any) determine being Polish. [231]

your birthplace could be accidental .... I think it's more important what nationality they were and where you grow up.

Good point.

I think there comes a point where you have to say that you're American and again, in my opinion that is the place where you were born, not the place where your parents or grandparents were born.

Hmm...

I agree with the premise that what you are is determined by whatever nation you were born, but only to a point...
Say for many generations your family was from one place, Korea, let's say, they are unquestionable Korean. But at some point your parents moved to Poland and that is where you were born and raised. I think then it would be a stretch to call this person "Polish" just because that's where they happened to be born when their linage is so thoroughly Korean.

Maybe not "Poles" because that implies we are subjects of Poland, but "Polish" fits us just fine.

Fine. You're just "ish".
