Life / Proper dose of life in Poland... the harsh realities. [64]

Because it's largely anonymous. I have no idea what you look like. I wouldn't rant in a bar as the vibe is different. You have to respect other peoples' personal space. Here, anyone could be anyone.

So, I state once again, your views on the thread are? I've given you food for thought above.

Better ranting on a forum than in real life. Let people fight their own corner, many Poles are good at it. If they live under harsh conditions, they either change or live more modestly.

Really bad in what way? Social unrest? Abject poverty? What changes? Poland has done well with regards to GDP, it is on the way to becoming stronger and offsetting some of the hardships.

Aha, I stand corrected rtz. I broke one of my own rules by making an assumption.

Anyway, what is your connection to Poland and what is your conception of the harshness of life for some here? Rising prices would be a good start.

Rtz, I feel the Polish psyche more and more. My wife is Polish and I live in and amongst Poles very often. All I was saying is that deflection is commonplace and it would be good for you to address specific elements of the thread, especially being a native Pole. It strikes me as odd that Poles speak out against their country on the streets and behind closed doors but choose to deflect on fora.

Please don't be so defensive, I just want you to stay on track and discuss harsh realities for the 'przyciętny Polak'.

This is not a comparative study. This is about the harsh realities of life in Poland, repeat, Poland. What does impressing you and your being alive have to do with the thread?

If you choose not to mention harsh realities then please go to another thread.

Harsh realities:

1) ZUS overcharging

2) A defeatist ethos in many people

3) An ever-increasing credit society

4) Too many workers abroad

5) No basic manners in some places

6) No concept of gratitude

These are just some. Your turn :)

Bingo! I was just waiting for that!! What do other ex-commie countries have to do with it? He lives in Poland and is commenting on Polish issues because this is a Polish forum. Kindly clear out with your deflection tactics and start staying on track, ok?

Read the thread, bucko!

I agree. Dilapidated Mercs are MUCH more an issue of Albania. Go to Tirana and prepared to be shocked. Doggy doo is everywhere.

As long as WB has outlets, he will be ok. Some Brits actually revel in it. They like a good gripe and Poland gives them that option.

It is better to see the glass as half full rather than half empty but WB is just pointing out some areas that need work. To sweep problems under the carpet is to do what China does. WB has commented on the plusses of Poland and he has made us aware of them before.

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

PLAT makes a good point. My wife told me that many Poles see Russians as somewhat inferior. We watched part of the film about the Polish-Russian war and she told me that then. What an absurd generalisation!

Life / Doctors taking bribes in Poland [76]

Faen! What a farce! Fanden! Let's keep bribes under wraps, let's revert to the ways of those commies in China ;) ;)

Fjandinn! Fan! Nothing like insiders getting a clear look-in, though. Ach, Perkele! :)

This is an open forum so let's keep it that way ;)

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

Where did I say that it was closed down due to smoke, Olaf? At most, I implied it but there were other material concerns at play.

thefreedictionary.com/segregate, not so harsh if you read it naturally. Segregation or separation, take your pick.

Also, the logic hasn't changed throughout the years. If it was harmful then, then it is harmful now. Also, many in Poland smoke strong cigs so passive smoking is more of a factor. They even put Scots, the nation with the highest rate of coronary heart disease, to the sword!

I think reality can be harsh when you pursue nuclear family options, i.e 2 kids. You live in fear that you won't be able to sustain your lifestyle. Some in the farming community are happy to accept small change for their produce whilst some more competitive firms can ask for exorbitant amounts. Poland lacks an old boys network like Scotland has. That was one plus of communism, full employment. It's more dog-eat-dog now and that brings out some nasty instincts.

Gotta beat it? That's a bit private for a public forum, wouldn't you say? ;) ;)

A surprisingly sheltered response from Torq. I speak Polish well enough to know what that idiom means but you feel that you can only discuss it with Poles? Isn't that lame? I'm surprised, Torq.

Torq shows heart&soul. He is a well-travelled guy and is right on the money with many of his comments. I can testify to his generosity too. He is Polish in that he defends his own but is more balanced than many.

So, Torq, it is a running joke that Polish doctors accept bribes. Any first-hand experiences as I haven't had any?

Yeah but you are a self-confessed "money-making machine". It shouldn't put you out too much.

Addressing the thread, we are all aware of the emerging nouveau-riche in Poland but still the majority trundle on in relative poverty. I don't know how it is in England but I imagine it to be broadly comparable to Scotland in terms of farmers. They are rich buggers in Scotland but not so here.

Shelley, he has a point. You really need to experience Poland otherwise you only have preconceptions and half-truths to guide you. Defo not enough.

I don't need to bribe doctors as I'm as fit as a fiddle and have an NFZ card anyway.

It all depends on the scale of the treatment you need.

Yeah, I've heard that Kielce has a special vibe about it. Did you encounter any flick-knives? They are renowned for their 'syzorki'.

You are quite an enigmatic guy, WB, it'd be a pleasure to meet you. I was thinking of asking SeanBM about meeting him in Kraków but I'd like to meet you up in Wrocław.

Did you notice any difference between Wrocław and Kielce? I felt that Wrocław folk were happier with their lot than here (but still Poles ;) ;)).

It really beats me how some Poles can hold it all together. You, being a rich guy, must see it more acutely than most.

Amathyst, no offence but he's talking about Poland. GB has many substandard sh*tholes too as we know being British ourselves.

Define the real Poland, WB? In Japan, Izumo was the real Japan without foreign meddling.

Do you mean that the most devout Catholics are in the countryside representing the real Poland? I don't get your drift!
