Law / Online kantory in Poland [14]

Even for a hundred quid, go to them and ask them what rate they'll give. Almost every single small one will move a little bit to get your business.

There's a shocker of a place that was/is in Dworzec Glowny there - the spread was over 1zl. But you can try any other one in the centre - I'm sure you can get it up to 5.02 without any problems.

In Szczecin the situation is a bit different. :(

Well - the rate I'm quoting was for a serious amount of cash (several transactions of well over 25K EUR) - but it shows that it's doable. You should get within 2gr of the interbank rate easily enough in Poland without much negotiation at all.

Obviously normal kantors are a ripoff

Ever tried negotiating with them? They will normally negotiate very very well on amounts over 100 Euro.

For serious amounts (ie, at least 20k) - you can ask the bank to negotiate. Most banks will have specialist units that can offer competitive rates - the best I've seen from BZWBK was a margin of just 0.075gr on the interbank Euro rate.

News / Qatar Airways opens contact centre in Wroclaw! [27]

If the electorate are content, isn't that what wins votes and retains his power? Ipso facto he is doing something right, non? Not that I know him at all, but just sayin'.

The electorate are very content. But he is an incredibly powerful man - powerful to the point where other political parties have a lot to gain by smearing him as much as possible. If he was to start forming coalitions at the local government level, he could easily gain a significant amount of power in Poland. It's no surprise that the mainstream parties are attempting to put him down - there are elections in less than 2 years, and a serious coalition of independent mayors would be a serious threat to the Government.

Politics in Poland has always, always worked on the basis of who can smear the others as much as possible rather than actually being based on reality.

BTW - I strongly believe that anyone who think so hard and who spend so much effort on gays is a crypto-gay itself? are you?

I think so too. It's not normal to spend so much time obsessing about the subject.

Law / Can't get a social security number/PESEL in Poland (I'm from UK) [56]

They stare at my passport a lot when I come in and out at the airport, I can tell you. And I don't think it's because they fancy me.

The most hassle I ever get is from the UK, strangely enough.

Even crossing at an obscure small Montenegrin/Croatian border crossing didn't even raise eyebrows, even when I was driving a car registered in Poland!

Or they can just make sure they leave Poland every 90 days.

Apparently the most ridiculous thing about the requirement to register is that there's no punishment in law for not registering!

Now that would be something I'd like to have.

I'll check mine when I'm at the other place, but I don't think mine says it? My piece of paper isn't even blue though - more like green!

I'll let you know if I have any luck with trying to blag a card - it really would make things much easier to actually have one.

But why would I want a PESEL?!

To not have to deal with the tedious explaining that "no, I don't have one"? ;)

How did you get the residency certificate in the first place without a valid address to register at?

And how do I get that plastic card you mention rather than this blue one which I've had for a while now and it looks like something done on a photocopier.

The local Foreigners Office, but you'll need a registered address for it. No harm in asking, anyway.

That as well - I've definitely seen two cards with my own eyes issued to EU citizens rather than the paper - you need to ask them for it, and they can be stubborn about it - but it's definitely possible to get one.

I'd give them a call and ask - make up some reason (such as needing it to get a loan, or some such nonsense) and see what they say.

The pieces of paper are totally useless - barely anyone understands what they are!

Law / Can't get a social security number/PESEL in Poland (I'm from UK) [56]

First time I hear about this 5-year rule? What is this about?

EU citizens get an automatic five years right to stay, and after that expires, they can either apply for the karta stałego pobytu or go back and re-register for another five years.

Harry - as an aside - I have some information (as Poles say) about the EU residence certificate - I have it on fairly good authority that you *can* get a proper plastic card if you get them to agree. I'm going tomorrow to plead my case - I'll let you know about the result...

I have never (in 17 years) been told that I can't have a maldunek because I have no PESEL number, the staff at the gmina offices have always accepted the form without a PESEL number.

At least here, the practice is to issue the PESEL once you have the five year meldunek - you need to specifically ask them for it, however.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

Perhaps I'm just old-fashioned, but I think that it might have been wiser from a language point of view to choose a reading comprehension text for the matura mock exam that was less controversial than one propagating the view that work is the best thing in life while love and especially kids simply get in the way.

Not a bad idea for a text. It'll make them think.

As any good Irishman can tell you, farmers have access to everything you need to make bombs.

UK, Ireland / Do the poles like British culture [127]

See, you missed the point. It isn't about people applauding you, it's about sticking to your principles when people are deploring you.

As Pam says, it doesn't put food on the table. He also comes across as a bit of an idiot - it's probably one of the few cases where they're actually telling the truth on advertisements.

And making people late because of your principles is hardly Christian behaviour, is it?

He stood up for his principles and didn't back down.

I'm sure those principles will come in useful when applying for new jobs after being fired. I'm sure his family will enjoy going without because his principles were more important than them.

Any real Christian would drive the bus.

Life / Czas honoru (Time of honoru) TV serial [38]

I thought I had explained to you what I was doing on Her Majesty's property during the Cold War (about the the time your mummy was pregnant with you) , but perhaps you missed it since the mods suspended you about that time.

Ah yes, you were sitting there, preparing to serve your foreign masters as required, including dropping bombs on Poles. You really don't need to clarify anything - we know that you were willing to kill Poles for dollars, and that's that.

Oh dear, oh dear. Trying to use insults really doesn't work when you get basic facts wrong.

I suggest you go away and learn about the results of the 2011 election. You'll find Ruch Palikota firmly in 3rd place, with the SLD languishing in 5th place. If you can't even get these facts right, it's impossible to take anything else you say seriously.

As for "Kingmaker" - let's see. PO are likely to see a fall in their vote if they don't start appeasing liberal voters soon - and these voters won't switch to PiS in a million years, nor will they consider the SLD. Where else can they go but Ruch Palikota? 15% of the vote would soon see Palikot in a position of power - particularly if the choice was between Ruch Palikota and a three way coalition between PO/PSL/SLD. Then again - I don't expect you to understand this if you don't even understand that Ruch Palikota are the third biggest party in the Sejm.

Your insults are nothing but typical of PiS voters - arrogant, self righteous and most of all, convinced that they are right even when they signed up to bomb their own people.

And you get upset when I call you a Marxist.

Forgive me, but after the bloodiness of the late 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and beyond - I prefer a future where people can grow up safe and sound. Not all of us sold our soul to a foreign military, after all.

Then again, you'd be first to flee to the US should the **** hit the fan anyway. We all know that "patriots" are normally the first to run.

News / Qatar Airways opens contact centre in Wroclaw! [27]

And where are those allegations coming from? Could it be that the major political parties are perhaps slightly afraid of him?

Surely you're not so naive as to believe that they wouldn't try and smear him at every opportunity?

As for the spending - city mayors really don't have that much executive power.

Life / Czas honoru (Time of honoru) TV serial [38]

Which symbols are important to you besides the hammer and the sickle?

Remind us who signed up again to drop bombs on those symbols that he claims to hold dearly?

Sorry, but it's impossible to take someone seriously who was willing to bomb, maim and kill his countrymen for a few dollars.

As for Palikot. Mind you he is a member of the Parliament and he thinks that the Polish Constitution should be gotten rid of. He sits under the flag and the eagle in that parliament and gets paid for it by Polish taxpayers. He is our biggest clown in politics ever.

Except the "clown" happens to be leader of the 3rd biggest party in the Sejm and could easily find himself playing kingmaker after the next election.

Completely? Or is this just another 1jola crusade rant?

Actually, what Palikot said makes a lot of sense - he was talking about the symbols as being representative of a prior age, an age of suffering and misery. The idea is that in the future, there will be no need for such symbols because the need for them will have gone. It's an interesting alternative viewpoint, and certainly far more sensible than screaming MURDER SMOLENSK repeatedly.

tell this a Frenchman, an Englishman...

I would. Happily. I can only dream about the day when German kids and Polish kids go to the same schools and speak both languages together freely without fingers being pointed and historical grudges remembered.

Palikot: The Constitution, Coat of Arms, and the flag are not necessary for Poland. They are false symbols.

Given the amount of blood spilled in the name of those symbols, perhaps he has a point.

News / March for Poland's democracy organized by PiS 13th Dec [49]

Less than before. What kind of fool organises a march in the middle of December?

They're also losing their effectiveness - regardless of what people say, the first one with Jarek was a PR success. But if they do keep marching, people will get bored, stop attending and the media will get fed up too.

Another march? Are they not getting slightly sick of predicting huge crowds and only getting a tiny percentage of what they predicted?

By the way Bob, we have democracy and free media. If we didn't, you wouldn't get away with writing half the stuff you do about Tusk.

No harm in that - it will undoubtedly mean expansion for Zelmer, and could even see their entry into the German market as a good, reliable, inexpensive product.

News / 2014-2020 EU Cohesion funds for Poland [11]

A good example is the 5.5bn euros earmarked for rail infrastructure investment, of which only 303m was used. This may be due to mismanagement, corruption or downright fecklessness

Or if you want another scenario - it's down to the Government not supporting rail on purpose to finally break the unions and their stranglehold over the railways for good.

News / 2014-2020 EU Cohesion funds for Poland [11]

how much is Poland expected to get for the 2014-20 time period?

Somewhere between 70-80 billion Euro, it seems. Poland wants up to 100 billion, but it's certain that the richer countries will tell Poland to go **** herself.
