Polonia / Ever been to Sweden? [185]

not just on PF but all over the internet

All over the internet? Must be gospel truth then.

Perhaps all those happy folks who live there should just surf the web instead of living their boring reality...

Losing ground quickly though

Far from it; social cohesion is still strong, tehir economy is healthy and it's still a great place to visit.

It still works, and their social system is first class. Sweden has among the EU's lowest levels of national debt, as well as low and stable inflation.

It's also one of the most stable and prosperous countries in the world, one where crime levels are low; certainly lower among migrants than non-migrants to Sweden:

the policies you endorse

Sweden, like all countries, make their own policies.

In the case of Sweden, they're a thriving democracy.

Inyteresting how this thread has been hijacked by people wanting to talk about immigration policies, despite there being many, many threads on this.

ghettos

I doubt many visitors to a country hang around ghettos.

a gang rape that was livestreamed

You do look at some odd things online...

Three dodgy sources there, all of them with an axe to grind.

It is actually a very nice place to visit.

Still, you're still far more likely to be killed or maimed on Polish roads at the hands of a Polish driver than you are to be killed or mamed by a hand grenade in Sweden.

Exactly. If half the stuff in this thread even half reflected reality, it would be like one of Dante's circles of hell. Instead of a country with a high standard of living and quality of life as well as a strong social system and a low crime rate.

Work / Working for the British council in Poland (Warsaw) [9]

You may get some more info on... Dave's ESL Cafe,

Yes-ish. I'd add that you're most likely to find out-of-date or second-hand information, opinion, and speculation.

Nevertheless it's still worth reading, though it's important to take things there with a very large pinch of salt.

@Maltinka, it's actually possible still to apply to the Council centrally, via their London HQ. How effective this is, I don't know It's also worth following them on LinkedIn (where they advertise) and checking out their ads (none for Poland; they don't generally need to advertise much since Warsaw has a surplus of experienced EFL Teachers) on tefl.com

Generally, once you've worked for the Council somewhere (perhaps on a short contract in a 'less-desirable' location, you've a foot in the door and have a good chance of getting more (and better) work with them. have a look at their various LinkedIn groups, especially the one for short-term contracts.

I suspect those making comments about Sweden have never been there.

I think so too. And interesting that a travel thread has turned into people's political preoccupations; there's plenty of that on other threads.

They dont give out details on the

Probably because there are so few. Though even one fascist gathering is one too many. Mind you, there is the famous photograph of the Polish woman handbagging the fascist who was polluting her town in Sweden; there's even a statue of that now.

Sweden is a very nice place to visit.

You didn't address anything I said

There's no need to address ypour preoccupations; you merely brought up things much discussed ad nauseam in other threads.

I wouldn't consider Sweden a lost country on the State Departments travel warning list,

It isn't subject to any travel warnings. In fact it is considered a very safe and pleasant place to visit.

A good social and economic system too, if a little conservative at times.,

all the terrorist hot spots and fascist parades

"All the"?

You would do better to look at your country's official travel websites; they issue travel warnings if there is a particular issue.

Carribbean

(sic)
There are more travel warnings for the Caribbean region than for Europe, and Sweden is considered a safe and attractive place for tourism.

I wonder how many of those posting disingenuous scare stories have spent much time recently in Sweden...

Polonia / Ever been to Sweden? [185]

This is all quite odd. The thread's about people's visits to Sweden, as the title suggests. Suddenly, years after the last post it has suddenly been reinvented as an immigration thing, something discussed to exhaustion in numerous other threads.

Next time someone posts a cake recipe, someone else will appear and say "but Muslims..."

your cousins anecdotal evidence

My own even, and this isn't a debate. I enjoyed my visit there, will certainly go again (as I've been before) and no 'ideology' has any part in that; just a nice stay in a nice city.

Unpleasant demonstrations by ultra-conservative malcontents can occur anywhere. Most people neither watch them nor take any interest.

Malmo also scores quite well. It's a very nice place; I was there in the autumn visiting my cousin who lives just outside the city. I didn't see any fascist parades or grenade attacks, and she didn't feel the need to mention anything like that in the neighbourhood.

This really has absolutely nothing to do with Poland.

Nothing at all. It's posted (using a tacky and long outdated tem in the thread title) simply to offend.

I doubt they even believe that tripe themselves. It is indeed an amazing country, with a very well-functioning social system, a rich culture and a thriving democracy.

Plenty of Poles move to Sweden for a better life; I don't see a horde of Swedes queueing at the port desperate to move to Poland.

I recently met a young Pole at our local Swedish Seamen's Church

Strong links between the two countries; since the Potop Szwedzki, and of course many families have for decades had a foot in both camps.

Now the BC is closing in Russia, they'll have a number of staff to redeploy somewhere. Added to the BC shrinking its operation in Poland, it isn't the best time to look for work there.

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

These people favor predatory capitalism - like Libertarians of the worst kind. Poland would lose big time doing business with these vultures.

One reason that Europe is very careful about doing business with them; food imports are a particular area of concern, due to low quality and poor labelling regulations. Pink foam and corn syrup anyone?

UK, Ireland / 31 year old Polish man causes accident under influence of alcohol and kills 8 [198]

Cider cans were found in the cab of his lorry, suggesting that he had been drinking while at the wheel.

I'm surprised he didn't get much longer since the situation is that bad. Was he charged for driving a lorry without a licence?

What you have tried to do is blame everyone and everybody except yourself.

Certainly not unknown in Poland to blame other everyone other than oneself. I wonder if he voted PiS, (when he was still able to vote).
