Work / Polish attitude towards promotions at work [11]

accused of thinking I am too good to work with them anymore. Is this typical response for gaining a promotion?

No. Typical response is anger (why not me, why I have to sit in this s office on the 1 floor) and jealousy.

Real Estate / Question about Czynsz (Building maintenance fees/utilies) in Poland [129]

and my surprise at the fact that people just pay their czynsz /maintenance fees by receiving a bill without any explanation.

Until my czynsz (290zł pcm) is lower than Kowalski's czynsz (650zł pcm) who is living in the bulding on the other side of my street im not curious about any details. The general rule is: new building - low czynsz.

Work / Why is Polish workmanship so bad? [52]

I'm working as an Electrician at the moment and the most important thing which people check before paying me is the fastening of sockets so I'm paying a lot attention to this part of work :) 1. It is really possible to mount socket in stupid-proof way. 2. Usually it requires buying a new modern socket housing and new socket. I suppose this guy's problem is that labour is cheap but new socket not.

USA, Canada / Moving from United Kingdom to USA. Is it worth it? [136]

The property price is very high too. Anyway I always "loved" USA according to Hollywood films (especially with Clint Eastwood ;)

You should watch these films more carefully again. e.g someone was murdered. The crime tool is pneumatic nail gun. Conclusion: this tool is common there, it was invented because of: they are lazy|they hurry up|they build houses using timber. Beware of termites man ;)

Real Estate / Tips for Renting in Poznań? [8]

1) Do I need to have a bank account before I can rent an apartment?

No, you don't

Do I need to have a permenant address before I an open a bank account?

yup

If so, do you think they will accept my work address?

I don't think so

Is there an equivalent in Poland to the renters insurance we have here in the US?

yes, you can buy it from insurance broker, flat should have at least two certified locks in front door (e.g. Gerda, Wilka).

I am expecting to bring a PC and my camera gear with me, and definitely want to insure them

at the moment in Olsztyn you can find working pc near recycling bins on average once a month ;)
If you choose well housing estate you don't need an insurance (except water leak, it is very important).

Language / Tips on learning the Polish language! [25]

I learned English by using Google search engine (the exact phrase blank). If some phrase I constructed gave me more hits I considered it as correct ;) Next thing is a reading text in which you are really interested in (you are familiar with). eg I was IT guy and majority of manuals are written in English ;) Some of Polish satelite stations like TV Polonia broadcast tv series with en subtitles. Don't focus on grammar. Better learn phrases by heart.

powodzenia :)

Travel / Gdansk - where to go and what's cool to see? [25]

This summer I want to see Gdansk for the first time.

It's a beautiful city and you don't need any advice. Just keep you eyes wide open and you'll be delighted. Funny photo from the trip you can take there ;)

Life / Driving across Poland (zigzag style) [15]

Is it known in other countries?

I think it is verboten in Germany and we shouldn't do it anymore due to increased number of bicyclists and scooters. They are almost still in comparison with the cars running about 130km/h

Travel / Krynica Morska - I'm planning on visiting this place very soon - any suggestions? [5]

Best way to get there from Gdansk airport?

a budget version is to take city bus in airport (service number 210) to get to Gdansk Główny (Railway Station) and then on foot, through tunnel, upstairs to Gdansk Główny (Bus Station) Shelter with the bigest queue will be right one ;) Be prepared for a horrendous traffic jam.

Work / English with a Polish girlfriend. Experience in engineering, machines - working in Poland? [19]

far too pessimistic

yup, it is hidden survey ;)

behind the times

no :)

what about smaller companies like Bujalski in Dywity?

How much they can pay? 5000zł pcm? I will apply tommorow ;)
Would you like to commute from Jaroty to Dywity for less than 3000zł? ;)

Why relocate from country where NMW is about 800 pounds pcm to Poland with about 1000zł?

Law / A father (foreigner) of a Polish child. How to protect my/daughter's rights? [19]

The current monthly amount is 1200 PLN. My ex is not happy with those money and wants more

It is pretty good amount pcm.

Should I try avoid the court?

no, probably alimony will be less than your voluntary support.

Or maybe the court is best option for me as it will give me defined rights towards my daughter?

It will be sign of trust lack. When she deny you a right to visit your child you can take the action.

Work / English with a Polish girlfriend. Experience in engineering, machines - working in Poland? [19]

Its not easy decision, because I want to stay in England

Be aware that Poland especially northern and eastern part is still very poor. Young people earn about 300-400 pounds per month but prices are almost western. They study, live with parents as long as possible and don't know what to do next. There is no jobs around. For example in Olsztyn there is only one big employer Michelin but town has about 180ooo inhabitants.

It doesn't matter if you speak Polish or not. You are still foreigner. We aren't ready for western style of thinking yet. I can't imagine you in my work among us but what's worse especially my bosses can't imagine. They not always play fair.

We notorious think where to escape. UK again (oh no) or Germany (available soon) or Norway (land of milk and honey) and you suddenly appear and consider moving here ;)
