News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

Restore the borders of the Pol-Lithuanian Commonwealth at its height under Warsaw's rule, and I'm sure Poles will agree to grant minorities far-reaching autonomy. That is far less likely in today's truncated mini-Polabd.

Why do you think Poland is too small today to be multi-cultural? What do you mean by "far reaching autonomy"? Doesn't Poland already grant this to the Vietnamese, and other ethnic minorities, living there?

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

Asians tend to spread out among caucasians more.

Where I live, in Southern California, Asian families are to be found in every neighbhorhood, but there are also Asian enclaves too. Chinese congregate in the city of Irvine. Iranians in the city of Laguna Hills. Anaheim has what is known as "Little Baghdad" where many Arabs live. Long Beach has an Indonesian section as well as a Cambodian section. Torrance has many Japanese and there is a Koreatown in LA proper, as well as vast Armenian neighborhoods. The cities of Westminster and Garden Grove share the largest and most distinct Asian neighborhood known as "Little Saigon" in which over 150,000 Vietnamese live together, signage is in Vietnamese, there are thousands of Vietnamese coffeshops, and some of the bus stops even have pagoda style roofs over their benches. I am sure I have missed some other Asian enclaves as well. Regarding the thread's topic in relation to Poland: Wouldn't it be fair to say that the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a multi-cultural society, and that it thrived as one, and so in Poland's case we have already seen that multi-culturalism is not a "roadmap to disaster"?

Life / Are there a lot of goths in Poland? [36]

Many Goths avoid to wear "Goth clothes" in public and only wears them on Goth festivals and so on.

I am all for individual expression and freaking out squares, but the deferenntial sartorial practice explained in the quotation above seems very sensible for the Goths. Where I live, in sunny Southern California, funereally attired, white faced, black lipsticked Goths look positively silly in the bright sunlight amidst the palm trees. At night they don't look so foolish.

UK, Ireland / Is UK the new cradle of antipolonism? [161]

This is NOT about Jews and I would urge the Mods to ban, not suspend, members who keep dragging it back to topics about Jews unless the topic asks for it.

The original post of this thread claims that part of British antipolonism is smearing Poles as synagogue burning anti-Semites.

and thus can be laughed out of this forum.

We Polish-Americans sure are laughing at your performance in this thread Dephiandomine. Your attempt to change the topic to a disparaging critique of the Polish educational system was especially hilarious. You've certainly earned your red rubber nose and floppy shoes if not your B.A.

News / Insulting Catholics in Poland can get you 2 years in jail? [67]

But I have in no way taken revenge, despite a single report to the public prosecutor (with copy to the bar association, apparently) being all it would need.

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

Southern I think this saying confuses the geese sacred to Juno Monetas with ducks. Her temple was where the gold was kept, hence the word "money", and her geese squawked during a clandestine raid by Celts, not Etruscans, and thus alerted the Romans who then repelled the Celts.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Because there are no crocogators in Poland?

Actually according to the the Italian film Maciste nell'inferno di Gengis Khan these animals were to found, and wrestled with, around Krakow in the 13th Century.

History / The Celts in Poland. [71]

Ancient Imperial Rome attacked southern Poland and annexed it to their colony of Pannonia.

Pannonia's territory was further South than Southern Poland consisting of areas that are in today's Hungary, Austria, the Balkans and Slovakia. Celts probably did live in what is today's Poland in ancient times but Imperial Rome never held sway there.

See the fourth book of Herodotus for an affirmation of the Saka's love of marijuana.

News / Wal-Mart coming to Poland? [146]

I have a warning for Poles about this chain of stores known as Wal-Mart. I went to one once to purchase an everyday item which I assumed that they would carry as they are giant stores. The Wal-Mart I visited was in a coastal community in Southern California but despite this location almost all of my fellow shoppers looked like the fat ugly losers that infest the less favored parts of the USA. I wandered the aisles, for what felt like hours, becoming more and more disgusted by the assortment of sweat-pants clad obese diabetics amidst me, and all for naught, because it turned out that Wal-Mart doesn't carry the item I was seeking. What was this item? It was a chess set! Wal-Mart carries numerous other board games, but the noblest board game of all is not stocked by this abomination.

But in regards of Hitler - he had German citizenship, didn't he?

Yes, Hitler did not wish to serve with Slavs in the Austrian military so he left for Germany to fight in World War 1.

UK, Ireland / What do Polish people think about Wales and Welsh people? [191]

"ch" sound, which funnily enough is how us Scots pronounce "Loch" ,ie,as though it was a Polish word

"Loch" was used as the example in a phonetic guide for pronouncing the Polish "ch" within the names of the characters in an English translation of Sienkiewicz's trilogy.

History / Why does the idea of a "Slavic Union" with Poland seem so popular on this site? [96]

I find it interesting that you folks are so keen on building a union around a language group...

I am in favor of an even greater union based on a language group that would be called the Satum Union. It would comprise not only all the Slavic countries but also Iran, Afganistan, Tadjikistan, Ossetia, Armenia, Pakistan, and India.

History / Writing a book: Occupations in the 1st half of the 20th century. [6]

Quote

A watchmaker is better than a welder.

There is a World War Two movie called "The Young Lions" in which a German character utters the famous line "He is a watchmaker and he wants to die." (Substitute v's for w's in the line to approximate the accent used in the film.)

Kiriwina Islands formerly known as Trobriands Islands - the place dear to the hearts of Polish schoolboys. (A hint: "The Sexual Life of Savages in North-Western Melanesia",

Why is it dear to their hearts Boletus? Just because Malinowski described sexual practices in that book or is it because it had illustrations or photographs?

History / Pieces of Real Polish History [60]

Will you continue teaching Poles how they should organize their own country? Show me any thread where I told Americans how they should live, please.

Antek you cannot refute my argument in favor of freedom of speech and so you claim that I am being patronizing towards Poles. I trust that Poles will govern themselves democratically while having total freedom of speech. It is you, not me, that has a patronizing attitude towards Poles, because you see them as being incapable of rejecting totalitarianism if they are allowed to hear some people advocating it.

Did I already say, DE, Poland suffered enough atrocities and calamities due to nationalism, racism, discrimination, totalitarianism to let it happen again?

Yes, and you have utterly failed to prove that restricting freedom of speech will prevent any atrocities or calamities for Poland.

History / Pieces of Real Polish History [60]

The first President of the Second Republic of Poland, Gabriel Narutowicz, was killed by a nationalist assasin.

You write this in response to my assertion that the Poles would never impose totalitarianism upon themselves given unrestricted freedom of speech, because you are lacking rational faculties. The USA has had several of its presidents assasinated, but no one here would be stupid enough to claim that freedom of speech was to blame for these assasinations, nor that totalitarianism naturally follows from such assasinations. If Poland became a sort of dictatorship after Narutowicz's assasination that has absolutely no weight as an argument against unrestricted freedom of speech.

You said implicitly that the Constitution of Poland is anti-liberal.

No, if you had quoted my entire sentence it would be apparent that I have said that you, Antek, are interpreting the constitution of Poland in illiberal restrictive manner that has resulted in your claiming that people on this discussion forum are criminals according to it.

I have never been patronizing towards Poland.
