News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

I would say regardless how well off Poland is today (or not) it is definitely better off than before WWII

Surely you josh, how German of you. No doubt in my mind Poland faired much, much better before WWII, no if or but about it. Back then we just managed to regain our independence our destiny was a blank canvas for us to toy with, unlike the Poland of today where the geopolitics dictates the terms. Free of the today’s restriction we achieved far much more in the short 20 years back then than we did now after 89, even though we had to fight reds for our very existence in the meantime. Perhaps you care to share whatever it is that you smoke maybe then I’ll see the reality as rosy as you do or just be too stoned to really care.

Genealogy / SLONSKI - Looking for my Polish grandfather [17]

If it is indeed Śląski than yes it means from Silesia, although today the term used for Silesian is Ślązak. Here's the map where people with this surname live in Poland today.

Definitely Fawlty Towers – For some reason every time I see the name espana here Manuel comes to mind. ;)
Seriously both British cinema and comedy are great. Nothing wrong with Dr.Who btw, I always did liked that show.

Genealogy / SLONSKI - Looking for my Polish grandfather [17]

Should I go with Slon = Elephant or Slon = Sun???

Neither, since there’s no elephants in Poland except the ones in zoos you can rule it out, "Slon" for "Sun", not plausible either. Most likely explanation is that your surname is misspelled and should have been "Słomski" or "Slomski" – in which case it would have been taken from a place name, meaning (from Słomin) there are two such places in Poland, one is located in Płock County, Mazovia or "Słomin" near Warsaw. There are 1445 with the surname "Słomski" and only 4 going by the name of "Slomski" in Poland, btw there’s none with the surmane of "Slonski" or "Słonski".

Edit: Interesting, there are 490 going by "Słoński", I have no explanation for this one, could it be?

Got it: Słoński or Sloński – dating back to 1386. Topo from the place name Słone, Słońsko (quite a few of those in Poland). Looks like you have some research to do, which was the original spelling.

Language / Are the context of these Polish sentences correct? [101]

Understood, Kali :-)
Whenever you have the conversation with your cousin tell him/her to correct you as much as possible. Not bad overall, close to my last example where I'm able to know what you mean. I assume you’re learning on your own?

Language / Are the context of these Polish sentences correct? [101]

but your word order is the most confusing issue yet.

Basic sentence structure is very important in any language, confusing or not it’s something you’ll have to deal with, the sooner you realize it the easier the learning process. Rationalizing it will not help you. Just because it makes perfect sense to you in English does not mean it’s the same in Polish and vice versa. If I were to make a direct Polish to English translation, word for word , let’s say; (Ja i Mariola jedziemy nad morze na rowerach) I would say something like [I and Mariola we ride over sea on bicycles], or (Chudego porwała wichura) [ Lean swept gale]. Does that make sense to you? Other times i.e. (Chory został wypisany do domu) [Sick was discharged to home] is easy to make the connection and you know I meant [The patient was discharged home].

Of course you’ll be understood some of the time but more often than not you’ll come up with this sort of nonsense. Basic grammar and sentence structure is very important, it’s easy to pick up bad habits, hard to break them, once you get used to it. Other grammatical errors like which case to use or which word ending is proper you’ll be able to correct on the fly so to speak, learn as you go, making your experience of learning any language that much easier. Don’t take it personally when people emphasize grammar. It’s not meant as an insult to you personally or to discourage you from speaking as soon as possible. Keep at it; it will all make perfect sense soon, you’re doing fine.

Food / I have a Polish couple coming over for afew days and would like to cook for them. [93]

I have looked on the internet and have seen that Bigos is the national dish so I might do that was just wanting some helpful feedback

Don’t you think that cooking British dish would be more appropriate? I myself would appreciate it more than bigos. Do what you feel comfortable with, besides with good company, couple of beers, promising game and good host like yourself it will definitely be a hit, so you have nothing to worry about.

Life / 2 months to go - I will be a Polish citizen and try to find a better place to raise my kid. [67]

According to one of his previous posts, this guy is Brazilian

You were saying?

I don`t eat Pork I am Jewish so will take the cheap electronics ....

Perhaps from Brazil but a Jew nonetheless.

EDIT: Amazingly enough whenever one of your own speaks ill about Poland, Polish Jewish community remains silent, shame on YOU.
There’s nothing anti Semitic about calling someone a lire and a bigot. Even if he’s a Jew.

That's just honest and genuine Jewish love for Poland, taking Polish citizenship to have an entrance to EU, repulsive really. I just wonder why he decided to let his son be born in a country he despises so much. One thing for sure, wherever life might take him he won’t cultivate his Polish heritage, he’ll just pass his hatred on to his son. Sad really, perhaps he should have spare him that humiliation.

Genealogy / Polish nationality? Which of the following (if any) determine being Polish. [231]

Sounds like to me the kind of people that mostly emigrated to America - uneducated peasants with little knowledge apart from how to use their hands.

Obviously you never did any kind of research yourself but believe some urban myths, if you care to take a closer look at ships manifest through alice island records you will find that vast majority of Polish people stated they can read and write. Not able to speak English is not the same as being illiterate in your own native language. Most spoke a second language as well or at least being able to communicate like German and Russian.

I was stopped yesterday and managed to barter down to 100zl did I pay too much or get off lightly?

Speeding offence, 50 and over is 500 zł so it’s a bit less in your case but than let’s say not using seat belt 100 zł etc. You got off cheap. LOL I’m just waiting for you to start a thread about corruption, damn foreigners.

Genealogy / Garus last name - from Poland or Russia? [28]

Hello! I am Researching the Garus name and i found a grandmother (Trybiec) came over in 1905 she lived in Lesinowska????? any avice on this place would be apperciated.

That would be Leśniówka near (Krosno) Poland

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le%C5%9Bni%C3%B3wka
mapy.eholiday.pl/mapa-lesniowka-chorkowka-krosno.html

The polish name Garus was to believed to have ski on the end like garuski or maybe garusky not too sure.

Garus is spelled correctly, no need to deceive yourself that it was changed. Ships' manifest states your grandmother was single upon her arrival, perhaps you should start your search with the church records where they were married and go from there.

I would like to be able to translate things to english.

I'm sure that if you post it here whatever needs to be translated some kind soul will help you out.

Law / Investors/Entrepreneurs.. Steer Clear of Poland. [77]

one of the many problems with Polish bureaucracy is that it's structured so that the person dealing with it needs to know the regulations better than the people whose job is enforcing them.

The problem is that Polish bureaucracy is a relic of the communist times when private business was discouraged and the system set up to limit it, it was improved on for 50 years and it won’t change in a decade. Having said that I’ve already sated that reform is badly needed or did you miss that? Whatever the reason we can agree that we need reform.

A normal person finds out enough to get started and then makes adjustments as they find out more.

Agree but how is it any different than any other country whose name you’ll pick out of the hat at random? Now compound it with your own experience the way things are done in your own country and language limitation and you’re in deep sh*t but blaming everyone around you for your business not doing so well is not the way to go. Any reasonable person considers all those things that might hinder his business growth before taking the risk of setting up the business in an alien environment. He moans about every problem he encountered and blames everyone but himself for his own shortfall.

I never said anything comparing PL to another country or culture. You put that in there.

True not in those exact words but the intention is clear enough.

I DID submit all as required. They wanted to see the originals over & over and make copies which they did at time of the original submission. Read it again. My stubbornness?? About what exactly?

You don’t say. Talk to some people that were abroad to your own country and see for yourself if they didn’t experience the very same difficulties you’re experiencing now. It’s not the country to blame but the way you do the business in that country that might be a complete 180 of wherever you’re from. A simple conversation with someone who went through it all would make you realize some points you have never considered yet are the reality and something you have to deal with like it or not, hence I said research not some detailed study of legal system.

What parts of the legal code should I know about?

Perhaps only the one that deals with the way you expend your business. If not you learn as you go so whose fault is it?

Law / Investors/Entrepreneurs.. Steer Clear of Poland. [77]

these turn into things to defend at all costs

I beg to differ, he turned this into one big rant as if was cultural difference. Point is there’s room to improve and government regulation is at the top of the list but all of his sub points are the very same things that plague the small business owners all over the world. Tell me how is it the fault of cultural difference or even government when it comes to dealing with the Banks? Get over it.

So how is it my fault that this last time it took from April 1 to June 9 to be completed?

Who knows but given your statement that they had all the paperwork already you probably submitted it somewhere down the road and now it’s the agencies fault for your own stubbornness. Next time submit all the documents required, problem solved.

bad for the economy as a whole. It shouldn't take that much effort to get something simple done.

Agree it’s up to the small business owners to put some pressure on government to reform some of the way the business is done.

The problem is even paying a premium, you don't get constant quality

Same can be said of the grosser or any other small business in the US, been there seen it. As a costumer you pay a premium price for the product yet the quality is not there. So the problem is either with the grocer who wants to maximize his profit or his supplier. It’s not an exception either it’s a norm. I don’t see any difference.

Are you defending the stupidity of this?

It’s not stupidity, sadly it’s the way things are, reform is in order but if he done his research he would have known that.

EMPLOYEES

You honestly expect someone to chop his butt for minimum wage? Get real. Instead of ******** give them an incentive (a raise) or roll up your own sleeves if you want your business to prosper, what makes you think it would be any easier in Poland? Because the wages are low?

UTILITY COMPANIES

You haven’t done your research properly, instead of blaming the laws and bureaucracy blame yourself for failing to do so.

PRODUCE VENDORS

Four words for you (quality demands premium price).

OTHER COMPANIES

You still haven’t explained how this differs from any other place? Like where you’re from you never encounter any unforeseen complications setting you back.

KRS REGISTRATION

Bureaucracy, the point is that it's you who suppose to have all of the documentation pertaining to your business on hand, not some government agency.

BANKING/CREDIT

Once again business is business and how your Bank deals with your risky venture is something to be sorted out between you and the people extending your credit line.

IMMIGRATION/RESIDENCY OFFICE

I suppose it’s different here than in US? The difference is that now you’re the one who has to deal with immigration status, finally hitting home, so stop bit**ing.

Conclusion – a rant of spoiled Yank who would have avoided some of the complications if he set up his business in his own country like; IMMIGRATION/RESIDENCY and cheap labor force due to overabundance of Mexicans.

Love / Is it possible for Filipino gay like me to have a Polish lover? [13]

so it seems that there are more gay Polish people than ever before

BS; there always was a certain segment of population that swings the other way, they are just more visible these days but the number are not growing, I prefer them in the closet.

I used to have a Chatmate a Polish guy but i lost contact with him.

Let me guess, right at the time when he learned of your sexual preference.
