USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Soon time to rrrrroll up the rrrrrim!

I remember, goo luck:)

If one doesn't wake me up, the other surely will!

too much information:(

During my time that's what they called it. I beg to differ. You can't do it badly-it's fool-proof. :)

you are just sentimental and you memory fails you re: Polish Turkish style coffee - it was and still is like drinking mud;), but when you visit you will have the opportunity to drink all the mud you want;).

being sick in Poland
well, it appears that I have been working too much and I have a cold. It is a good opportunity to get some attention among my friends and my family members.

I send the youngest one to get me some hot and sour chinese soup, it always seemed to work in Canada, but there was Chinatown.

My boss takes me to the drugstore and tells me that I am not suppose to take antibiotics. NO,NO, NO - advices pour through.

Instead she suggests some OMEGA something shark blah, blah which is good for the brain function, well, I only have a cold - is she suggesting something to me? I don't want any shark products.

Regardless, I buy the OMEGA, rutinoscorbin - which pretty much the whole Poland is addicted to, sick or not, in order to get rid of my boss and go home.

I have my own way of dealing with the cold. Do not disturb me. They keep calling from work with some unimportant questions. Leave me alone - I think. Wrrr.........Do I need anything btw?- they ask. Yes!!! Peace would be nice.

Noce to finally be noticed and I am gonna milk it for sure;)

Damn it, you just ruined it for me.

I seem to do it to lots of people;)

This whole time I pictured Szarlotka as this gentle, kind, FEMALE soul!

he might be that too, I concentrate usually on his writing, but I guess legs are your domain;)

This sux, I'm crushed.

figure of speech I hope;). Pilots!!!!!!!

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

Hm.. actually as far as I know one of the few things that actually works in Ukraine quite well is Ukrainian Railway but that could be just a rumour ;-) Which is totally irrelevant for a person living in Szczecin anyway :-)

er, yes. I KNOW that:)

Aphrodisiac, you will not change reality writing on pf.

I know, just venting.

TLK belongs to PKP IC. They have some formal rules of lodging a complaint:

thanks, but NO. I have done my share of complaining in the past:)

Try it and tell as how it went (that could be fun...)

it could be , but I consider doing other things for fun, thanks for the input.
@Dolphi:

I am Ukrainian and I agree it is cool;)

an update:
this yea x-mas service was way better then the one last year. The trains are still dirty, but at least the are not overcrowded and mostly on time.

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

You do have a choice, you can always use Ukrainian Railways. The problem with "Akcja Wisła" is that they deported you Ukies in the wrong direction, they should have move you East not West.

If you knew the history, you would know they were trying. But that is another thread all together, stay on topic and lose your silly attitude. It ain't working on me.

no i co tego? Ukrainian Railway in Poland? - now that is brilliant. I have nothing against it as long as its clean, warm and fast.

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

Perosnally, I go with the theory that if you travel by "Tanie Linie Kolejowy" (or however it's spelt) - then you should expect "cheap railway lines".

I have mentioned that I have no other choice, haven't I?

Work / Do Polish workers get cheated on hours? [15]

For the guy that said i work for the USA factory - you either need a job or a girlfriend - or BOTH - LOL. Did I say - no hateful responses? Can you even read the message?

I can and I am not a guy. I am happy that you get paid for the hours you work.

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

another trip, another problem.

This time it was the heating. It got cold again an by the time I got onto the train I was freezing. Hoping to warm up during the trip, I soon realized that ain't gonna happen!!!!!!!

I asked the PKP or TLK (cannot tell them apart) if I can get some discount due to insufficient heating during my trip. She gave me an evil eye and asked me to test the heating in another compartment - it was THE SAME.!!!!!!!!!

So I joined the club by complaining about the bad service with other people on the train. I was wearing my fur hat and the woman across was buried under her coat. One would think that we boarded a train to Syberia.

PS. did I mentioned that some time ago I was travelling with a couple of Chinese engineers, who were planning to set up a fast train service in Poland - well, good luck to them.

Trying to stay positive, but this is the worst it have ever been on many accounts.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Little Miss Perfect

You might know the type and it is not exclusive to Poland. She is a walking perfection. In her mind of course. Everything she does (you usually don't know what she does, since she is secretive) is perfect on the outside. The inside is another story. Have you ever left tomatoes on a counter and forgot about them? They rot from the inside. Very critical and always right, bossy, characterized by a black and white thinking, mowi milym glosem nieznosacym sprzeciwu. Try to challenge her and she has a fit, or will go into hiding to plot against you, since her fragile ego is hurt. Or she will built a mental minefield and will set a trap every time you are around:(.

Avoid her, she is bad news and has long and scratchy nails:). I have encounter at least 5 of them, not including members of PF.

The sun is out
It is, although it is still below zero- brr......better stay inside as much as I can.

Ciasteczko!!

O Jezusiku!! LOL. I like diminutives!

Amen Sister! Shame the same can't be said for Timmies... :-)

he, he.....still drinking Timmies?

I thought you had one of those italian stove top models, water in the bottom, grinds sitting in a basket just above the water, water boils, filters up through the coffee grinds, further up a tube and into a receptacle? Great for an afternoon quickie.

er, yes. Not sure about the quickie comment though;)

WOW! all this talk about French presses and such. (laughing to myself) Back when I was a student you took your beans(that you bought in the Pewex, ground them up in your "Polish Press", poured your grind into a glass, poured boiling water in and waited. Now that was good, strong coffee. Po turecku.

times have changed in Poland:) although you can always get kawa po turecku, if you fancy one:).

Polish diminutives
I don't know if I failed to notice them in the past, or they just "mushroomed" in the language while I was away.

I go to the store and the lady at the counters asks: ma Pani piec grosikow? No mam.So I pulled out 5 grosikow, they are so small, that no wonder there are called grosiki.

However, some things are not that small at all.

Taksoweczka, szyneczka, karkoweczka, piwko, wodeczka, laseczka, kawusia, curusia, syneczek, rowerek, sweterek lol
Good looking men are called: ciacho (what a piece of cake).

O Jezu!!!!!!!!!

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Well, you are in Szczecin, but in Krakow it is me who probably makes the best coffee in town:).

I have 2 of those:D. Time to dust them off ?

Good coffee beans in the shops!

yep.

Do you mean there is much less of a "coffee culture?"

I mean: not the American style for sure. One can get a better coffee at pretty any cafe since they all have Italian coffee machines. I would say it is a different coffee culture here:).

Work / Some cold, hard facts about teaching in Poland for newbies [101]

While this is normal, as i understand it, they are now not allowed to make you sign an exclusivity clause if you have your own firm.

that is correct:). I was told that that my school does not mind me working at another place, which I will not do since I have more hours then I can handle at the moment:), however, that might not be the case next school year.

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

or is this not standard practice there?

well, it depends. I think you might be better off if you ship a car from the US. It will cost you less then purchasing it in Poland and it will be handy since the parents are old and sometimes you need to drive them around to the docs/bigger shopping and weekend trips. that is if you can. It will give you more freedom.

*
Another tip: take all the good quality stuff such as: dishes and pots and so on, otherwise you will be shopping for that in Poland forever, unless you want to shop at IKEA. I find that all those small things matter and will make you feel more at home, especially at the beginning when you are tryign to settle in. Also, it is time saving and money saving to get as much of the necessary stuff as possible. I find that kitchen stuff lacks quality here and the one which is good is fairly expensive here.

*
I skimmed through the thread, so I am not sure, but bring your computer - lap top, if you have any(they are more expensive here), make sure you buy the electricity adaptors - the proper one for all the electronics you are bringing in.

Make sure you get an internet connection at your new place. This will help you to stay connected at the beginning and useful when settling in.

Aha: IKEA (there is one in Gdansk)is a place to get some inexpensive stuff eg. furniture and so ...

You are moving to a Tri- City and I am sure you will love it. Good luck and ask away:) and relax, you will be fine. I have moved across twice - it is hellish at times, but it is doable:)

Language / spojrzenie, podejmowac - correct word usage [15]

spojrzenie

glance, or look - really depends on the context

ogladać

to watch

obserwować.

to observe

rodaniu, hand is ręka.
podjmować, podjemą ,how does it differ from brać.

it would be good if you quote the rest of the sentence.

zostały, i am reading a book and i am coming across this word where there should be the word for 'was'

not clear on what you are trying to say here. Was/were- były in Polish, but can also be a part of "passive voice" (strona bierna in Polish) eg. on był zmęczony- he was tired. and so on:)

zostały - became (past form) - can also be a part of [passive voice eg. zostały znalezione - were found

I hope this helps:)

Work / Some cold, hard facts about teaching in Poland for newbies [101]

It can be very difficult in terms of Polish clients reliability - frequent cancellations are normal. It's very rare that you'll have a week without any cancellations - looking at this week alone, I had two cancellations and (quite likely) another tomorrow because of the weather.

the only solution to that is to charge ahead and if the student misses the class you still get paid. Lay ahead the rules and they will know not to be late:). 24 hours notice works in most cases. One needs to train them a bit.

However, that is one of the reasons I do private lessons.

However, that is one of the reasons I do private lessons.

correction- that is the reason I don't do private lessons.

Work / Do Polish workers get cheated on hours? [15]

We moved to US 7 years ago - I started workign for one of the offices in Wroclaw a year before I graduated from Wroclaw University - Law & Adminstration. I was working 12 hours a day - getting paid for 8. Did anything change in this area? Are you getting paid for overtime?

so what? That is the way people work in Poland these days and by the look of it, you were not working during the communist times anymore;).

My family never belong to Ocmmunstic party so we have had no connections (if you know what I mean). That's one of the reasons we moved to USA. We wanted to get paid for our work, liem everyone in the civilized world.

so that means that half of Poland's population would have to move out because the only available jobs in Poland are very scarce. Poland is a free market and many people own businesses and they work long hours. I hope you are happy working in the US factory;).

It was the same in the US. It depends on the job.

of course it does. Marzenka's thread does not ad up.
