History / Obituaries with a connection to Poland. [18]

Wing Commander Tadeusz Sawicz. (303 squadron)

When the Germans invaded his homeland, Sawicz was serving in Poland with the 114 Fighter Flight of No 1 Air Wing. On September 1 1939, despite flying an antiquated biplane fighter, he damaged a Messerschmitt Bf 109. On September 5 he was appointed a deputy commander of his squadron, and over the next few days was credited with destroying two enemy bombers and damaging two more.

Life / Lightbulbs in Poland: what was once 1zl now costs... [10]

Enegry-save bulbs need to big energy to start and to get warm enough to operate cost-effective as far as I know.

The Eu have banned inefficent lightbulbs that cost several times as much and last 1/5 the time.

just to clear things a bit. the lightbulbs i saw (and bought) are the regular design, but halogen. they are instant start and seem to give reasonable light.

those curlywurly lightbulbs are different. they give off crap light and cost even more. about 9 to 10zl

To read less (yes I have heard that it gives the same light as regular old ones, I am not that suggestible) ;)

i find that reading is more difficult with the more expensive, slow to get bright type of bulbs.

Life / Lightbulbs in Poland: what was once 1zl now costs... [10]

thanks to the eu lightbulbs have gone down in wattage and up in price.

a 1zl style bulb now costs 5zl (at biedronka). however, the new bulbs are halogen filled.

if u own a hotel it's time to search around and stockpile

UK, Ireland / Websites for Poles to benefit from Britain! [210]

Britain sold Poland down the river so now Poles are getting their own back.

they are not getting their own back. they are simply claiming benefit.

it would be a very sad person who went on the dole in order to gain revenge.

Law / Medical Malpractice in Poland - seeking accountability? [146]

if fact a lot of people have their meal and bed sheets brought in by family or friends...

some folks might have extra meals brought in by family/friends, but Polish hospitals don't starve anyone. sometimes the food is ok.
i've never heard of or seen anyone using their own bedding.

i speak as someone who has been through the system more than once.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

odra tower:

prices from 6,758 to 15,500 brutto zl/sq meter

as of 2011-10-23

completion date is set for next year. i say that's doubtful as there are about another 15 floors to go before topping out.

u say the price will drop to 3,379 - 7,750 brutto zl/sq meter.

being polite as possible: i say you're nuts to think the price will drop 50%

upon final completion we will check the selling price. and then, one year later we'll do the same again. do u agree ?

copy this post for reference.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

here in wroclaw: it might be difficult to say exactly how much building is going on. the reason is that the size of individual projects is never the same.

i would argue that many developments are much bigger than they once were: angel wings would be an example of large. however, the building i posted a photo of (somewhere on the forum) is quite small.

Also, we have sky tower, which is almost complete... and odra tower, which is at about third floor level and climbing. these two examples show that the future looks bright for someone.

Life / Do Poles wear (patriotic) Polish clothing abroad? [6]

I could see British thug football fans wanting to pick a fight with me if I walked about in Britain with that on.

at least they can understand it. it's all in english.

Language / Naming / Nicknames for Aleksandra or Alexandra? [24]

If a kid/person constantly has to say "no it's aleksandra, not alexandra" they may get sick of it.

do children go by their full name these days ? are nicknames a thing of the past ?

even some adults use short forms.

one has no idea how a name will be changed over time.
