Food / Oils and fats in Polish foods [34]

@Bigmagic
Out of curiosity, have you tried it with butter as well?

As for oils, olej rzepakowy /canola oil is quite popular and I've heard it's really good, especially for cooking as some say it's better for your health than heated olive oil. No source here, just what I remember.

And there was this trend that coconut oil was just super healthy. But then again it's full of saturated fats -allegedly better than in butter or lard but still. ..

Genealogy / Piekarski surname - is it Polish? [7]

@johnny reb
You've never been to Europe, have you?

She doesn't look very Polish to me either and actually it's because of her teeth/jaw -I wouldn't call it perfect nor Polish. But then again there's this actress who plays Leonard's mum on tbbt who's also of Polish origin and her features seem so rare here that I can't think of anyone here who looks like her.

Piekarski is probably derived from piekarz (baker).

Life / Is the palace in Warsaw going to be rebuilt? [29]

Actually, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier was there before the destruction of the palace. And it might not have been a coincidence that it was the only part to have survived. Allegedly one of the German soldiers took the dynamite away from that part to honour an unknown soldier.

As for rebuilding of the palace, it will cost a fortune for sure. I'm not sure how certain ceremonies will be held if it turns into a construction site. On the other hand, once I read an interview with a man responsible for rebuilding a castle (in Bobolice I think ) and he said that had he left it in ruins as it had been, it would have been honoring the enemy who'd destroyed it. Perhaps there's some truth to it.

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

@Dougpol1
1. Where did I say children should pick up litter in forests?
2. Where did I say Poland cares for its citizens?

Now as for cutting down personal stuff don't you tell me I think nothing could be done about it as I never said it.

I really don't know if you can't make out who said what or you're so blinded with your own personal żółć ;) that you're making things up.

Now all of us should do something for the climate, change our lifestyle and habits and another thing is what the government should do in terms of legislations etc.

As for the tiny things I can do, I'll just stop here as I'm not going to waste my time and my phone battery on someone who just likes arguing.

Perhaps but it's like he never has anything positive to say - perhaps I can't remember him saying anything positive and that kind of makes me feel he's toxic.

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

@Dougpol1
Where and when did I suggest that? I basically said that during the Clean Up the World event kids in Poland often do that and it's of more use than just a protest, that's active participation.

And stop trying to argue with me. You're dissatisfied with pretty much everything around you and I really don't like toxic people especially if they try to suggest I said something I didn't say.

As for climate change, apart from protests we all need to be aware of how we behave. Now how many kids go to school in their parents' car instead of walking /cycling. How often kids, people in general, change their smartphones and other devices just to get the latest version. Do you drive to supermarkets or to a gym ;) ? Do you bring your own shopping bag? Etc etc

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

@mafketis
I kind of experienced it too. And I lived abroad for a relatively short time.
But still if someone manages to work out how, for example, taxes work abroad, how to open s bank account, get health insurance etc speaking a foreign language, doing it in your mother tongue should be easier - but then it gives you more reasons to complain.

What do supermarkets have to do with kids?
As for climate change, not słodziaki ...
Clean Up the World is organised worldwide really and though I don't know where the protest in your photo took place, if that's a recent photo, it's probably part of the event, too.

Ecology like charity; ) starts at home. Whether or not kids are encouraged to take part in such actions at school (and Lenka actually made a great point about a protest organised at school) if they're not taught the basics at home, a random school protest or cleaning won't change much.

As for legislations and laws, it's the government's role

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

Come on. If someone managed to start a new life in a foreign country, are they really unable to learn how things work here?
Is anyone worried about those who don't know how to start a business, get new skills etc? If you need to do something you do it yourself. As for leaflets, I'm not sure it's such a great idea in the era of the internet. And where do you distribute them? At the airport?

Use the internet, ask clerks for information etc.
As for what to do to bring back people here, I'd say it's a question of social security.

I'm not sure about protests but as far as I remember, mid-September is when Clean Up the World takes places and kids go to parks, forests etc to pick rubbish. A quick google search shows it's this weekend. Perhaps a more active way to show kids what ecology is but that's just my opinion.

Life / Is the palace in Warsaw going to be rebuilt? [29]

As for the Saxon Palace, I believe there have been some plans but we-re talking about an almost complete reconstruction. Right now only the part with the Unknown Soldier's Tomb still exist.

There's something really moving about it. The tomb in the only part of the dynamited palace that remained.

News / Commemoration of 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the WWII in Warsaw. Poland a full-fledged NATO member. [30]

@Lyzko
Are you talking about this image? It's not in Prague and look at the shop windows behind her. And the people next to her. I'm pretty sure these were tears of joy. And no, the war didn't start on September 9, 1939 in Gliwice.

@johnny reb
Whether Poland is important to Americans or not, that is common knowledge. It's one of the biggest conflicts in history. Just like they teach us about Alexander the Great even though hardly anyone is able to point ancient Macedonia on the map.

And the result us that later you read that WW2 started on September 9/17. ..

@Bratwurst Boy
War is never easy for civilians but still ...
Whether or not they were treated as second class citizens, do you remember when I asked you about Karlsbad and I thought it was German Karlsbad? (it was you, wasn't it? :) Well, apparently they didn't mind treating others as second class citizens.

News / Commemoration of 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the WWII in Warsaw. Poland a full-fledged NATO member. [30]

@johnny reb
It's basic history. Don't they really teach that in the US? Germany invades Poland, Poland is the first country to fight back. Britain and France declare war on Germany. Later the USSR invades Poland. Soon the conflict spreads all over Europe and the world. You know the Axis, the Allies etc. Most historians consider the German attack on Poland as the beginning of WW2, some point to earlier events.

I'm afraid you got something wrong. The attack started from the air (bombing of Wieluń with about 75% of the town destroyed without any previous declaration of war), the sea (Schleswig Holstein and Westerplatte) and on land.

Gliwice incident was one of the false flags incidents before the attack.
As for the photo, as far as I know the woman was a Sudetenland German and these were tears of happiness.

Lewandowski is a popular surname - tens of thousands of users. The street must be named after a Lewandowski.
You didn't say what years you're interested in or what religion your ancestors were.
Generally speaking records that are over a hundred years old are kept in diocesan or state archives. Provided they survived all the wars etc
