News / Tusk or Hollande -- a Salomonic dilemma? What will be better for Poland? [180]

Germany are getting far more than Poland has received in structural funds. Germany has acquired a huge consumer market eager to buy its products right next door.

Get real, Polonius. If there is one country which has benefited from the EU and in particular from Schengen, it is Poland. What would have happened to those millions of Poles who went to find work abroad, in particular in the Uk , Germany..? They would have had to stay home unemployed because the previous Polish govts (PO and PiS) were incapable of creating enough jobs for them and Poland would have had a massive problem in its hand. I would even go as far as to argue that this massive benefit to Poland has been the main cause of Brexit and of the current difficulties experienced by the EU

Life / What items is Poland's market missing? [20]

@delphiandomine
won't make you sick but it certainly kills the flavour. And for me, this is the main reason why Americans want their drinks ice cold, they like flavourless stuff (think US beer or US coffee...)

Life / Withdraw Europe money in Poznan [16]

Unfortunately you won't, you're in Poland, we don't use the Euro, are there any ATM's in France that dish out the Zloty?

Nothing to do with this. In Switzerland, where the currency is CHF, you can withdraw euros on many ATMs. And here in Turkey where I currently live, currency is Turkish Liras but you can still withdraw euros or USD from many ATMs.

News / Frau Merkel today in Poland [70]

@Crow

What exactly are you trying to say Crow? That Merkel's husband, J Sauer, is Jewish? That J Kaczinski climbs the ladder to Merkel's room

at night to sing her a lullaby? It is getting more and more difficult to follow you..

News / American GIs troops finally in Poland and, thank God, there's more to come [480]

What kind of message is that to young people, to people in general?

It is a simple message of solidarity, like many people saying after 09/11 "we are all Americans" or many French after last year's massacre in Paris " je suis Charlie". But solidarity with people who are just human, like you and me, and not necessarily caucasian or slavic is probably something difficult to comprehend for you...

I just learned (google that on the net) that Madeline Albright, former USA secretary of state (during Bill Clinton`s administration) wants to become Muslim.

Crow, are you doing this on purpose (aka in your Fsb paid up disinformation role) or are you just gullible? She has only said that in reaction and in solidarity to Trump's plans for a muslim register, she is ready to register herself...

News / What impact will Donald Trump's election have on Poland? [331]

And if Poland allows a huge US military base in Poland it will add Billions of dollars into Poland's economy

Lol. Unless they built a base with several hundred thousand soldiers (10 times the current largest US base in the world), it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the Polish economy

should the media be held accountable by a fact checking body?.

Ideally yes, but if I remember correctly, there were plenty of "fact checkers" online during the US elections debates pointing at the inaccuracies or outright lies aired by either candidates. Despite Trump being the clear winner in terms of "inaccuracies", that did not prevent him from being elected.

the promotion of Polish cultural values and tradition...

That's the key question. Should media at large be focused on the promotion of values, whatever they might be, or should they rather be trying to report facts as accurately as possible? I tend to go for the latter, even though I am aware that even full and accurate reporting does not guarantee unbiased coverage, since choosing or not to report a given story can itself lead to distortions. Having lived for over 3 years in Turkey (and not being Turk), I see this everyday in the selection of stories on Turkey reported by the western press

News / The first PiS led government in 2005 lasted just over 2 years in Poland. [129]

Serfdom was officially abolished much earlier than that and the last vestiges disappeared during the Napoleonic era.

I am not talking about serfdom but about slavery (please reread my post). The French revolution did indeed abolish slavery on 4th Feb 1794 but .. Napoleon reinstated it in 1802 (let's not forget that Joséphine de Beauharnais who was at the time Napoleon's wife was born in la Martinique in a large estate that employed many slaves.). It was definitely abolished on 27th April 1848 under the 2nd Republic

Bear in mind that serfdom wasn't abolished in Poland until the 1860s. A society where there exists the concept of fedual service to an overlord and being tied to the land, does not equate to democracy.

I agree up to a certain point. First of all, slavery, which is akin to serfdom, continued to exist in many democratic countries well within the XIXth century (for example 1865 in the US, 1848 in France..). Second, if you go back to the roots of democracy, ie Athens, democracy did not apply to all. One had to be a male and a "citizen" (ie not a slave) which means that in practice 10-15% of the population of Athens voted.

That's the ticket for becoming an economic power.

Like China for example?

Trump has none of those abilities - changes his mind literally every day.

Indeed, but he always falls back on his four legs. Have you heard how he explains his complete change of tack re Paul Ryan, the Speaker, once viewed as worse than evil and now almost a genius? It is not that DT was wrong, it is that Paul Ryan, like fine wine, improves as every day goes by..

News / The first PiS led government in 2005 lasted just over 2 years in Poland. [129]

For me it's not a question of PIS or PO, it's a fundamental problem that there is no tradition of democracy in this part of the world

Your posts are usually very to the point and interesting , but this one is wide off the mark! Poland had experience of democracy (or at least elections) before many western european countries, plus the second oldest written constitution in the world!

Seams that Trump saving Europeans from western European domination

Trump does not care for Europe, full stop. Today it is Western Europe who is disappointed by him, tomorrow it will be Central and Eastern Europe's turn.

History / Give Poland back it's lost land ! [132]

Europe became militarily insignificant on the world stage with only two powers left: the USA and the USSR

That's quite normal. Let's not forget that both world wars originated in Europe , and that our continent created both evil totalitarisms, nazism and communism. Quite natural that we got punished for this. That might of course change if the USA creates its own totalitarism of "the third kind", ie Trumpism. They might ultimately be punished for this and Europe will have its revenge :)

The pope suggested all Parishes around Europe should take in a Syrian family, this would show compassion

This year, in the church where my family and I went for midnight mass, there were several families of Christian Syrian and Irakis refugees who sung hymns in Syriac language. That was amazing.

I have compassion for MY family first

Like Crnogorac 3 and others, you are just a self serving egoist with no sense of compassion. That you pretend to be Christian just shows how deluded you are..

News / Polish Wigilia on UNESCO's world heritage list? [30]

Once again, you will find this not unique to Poland :

12 dishes: in France/Provence, 13 desserts
no red meat: in my Polish family, it is no meat at all
hay under the sheet: OK (although never seen it practised in my Polish family)
extra seat: same in France/Provence
midnight mass: same in France/Provence

In addition, there are "crèches" laid (birth of Jesus with the animals.;) in most French homes

No. Muslims kill Christians. In Ełk and in Istanbul.

Well, you're just plain wrong. Apart form Turks, most of the foreigners killed in Reina were Arabs

He doesn't. It was just his response to someone saying that kebabs somehow enriches culture.

Nope. My reply was to Bieganski that kebabs should only sold by Turks..

So much for that cultural enrichment we keep being told about it.

You're right. In the eighties I remember how culturally enriched I felt every time I ate a zapiekanki , a prime product of Polish culture
