USA, Canada / PolAms -- do you regard yourselves only as 'white Americans'? [187]

i always have.. he really is clueless.. even about PL.. he said that Poles from kresy and areas beyond Bug R aren't even polish.. those areas have been polish for only a millenium.. he's a joke.. that's all. lol

No, he said that they probably aren't 100% ethnically polish, which is a huge difference. People from kresy ethnically are a very mixed bunch. Part of my wifes family comes from what is now Belarus. They were pretty much polonized belorussians or lithuanians. No polish blood running thorugh their veins.

As for the consensus, it definately serves a purpose, and that is to find out how many hispanics there are in the US of A, so no wonder the government doesn't give a fak wether you are a PolAm or IrishAm. The days of Ellis Island are long time gone.

Life / My own thoughts about life in Poland (have lived here for two years) [133]

I've read this forum for quite a while, but I have not bothered to reply to most things.

It all depends how you voice your criticism, and having been here on PF since 2006 I must admit that your post with no derogatory words was a very refreshing one. Usually those criticisms that you mentioned were just venting by frustrates and lets be frank here, that never helps bringing a consensus. Quite the contrary, it sparks more arguments, witch is also very visible in topics about america and GB. Either way, you did make many valid points. We, as a society, are at the same time family oriented and antisocial. The english have a wonderfu word that lacks in polish language that would come in handy here, namely inconsiderate. We are also generally leery of others outside our circle of friends, outside our family, outside our neighbourhood, our village, city, our profession and of course outside our cultural circle.

Yes, the wages are low. This was the main idea to bring foreign investment to the country after the fall of communism. It's been 20 years now though...

Actually there is no point in me repeating your words. I could actually add few points here and there...

Poland is a country in a making. The transformation it took was enormous, but I do understand that some people would wish the pace of changes to be faster but talking here won't fix the problems.

Life / Who's Leaving Poland? [138]

Thats not what I meant, they took a tremendous burden away from us:)

I would rather say that they took a tremendous burden away from Germany. If our countries would share a common border, now that would be a different story... We Poles loved Ameryka back in 2004. :)

Look how the UK suffers now from joining the EE,, I have friends there besides PF and Its not so peachy and colorful as you try to make me believe.

The UK is a $hithole,,just admit it already,, Its like Texas we own it but dont really want it...lol

It has it's problems, but I wouldn't call it a szithole.

The EU did America a huge favor on that deal,,thank you:)

Yeah, as if Americas biggest immigration problem was people from EE.

Life / What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland? [164]

i personally find english streets lined up with identically looking houses depressing to say the least and when it comes to english food minus the ethnic cuisine...fish and chips or shepherd pie does not really make you a kitchen powerhouse, eh?

The topic is about culture shock in Poland and not in the UK.

Love / Why do Polish women prefer foreigners for boyfriends and husbands? [418]

I cannot still understand why a foreigner is superior to a Pole. For example a russian man is superior to Pole?Would a polish girl choose an ukrainian man?

According to a survey I read few years ago those marriages are basically non-existent. It's the opposite when it comes to men though, Byelorussian and Ukrainian women make the biggest group of foreign wife’s. When it comes to marriages with foreigners Germans were at the top of the list, but that was back somewhere around 2004 and I have a feeling that these days it's the people from the Isles that occupy this position.

Anyway, international marriages aren't that popular, really.

UK, Ireland / Not all is bad for Poles in Scotland! [167]

This reminds me of the situation between Poles and Lithuanians and Belorussians during the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Poles were in a similiar position as the english are with Scots, ect... Interesting.

Life / POLISH YOUTH compared to the youth in other Western countries? [57]

I remember the times when you saw only the military short cut hair in the countries eastern of Oder. And women tend to resort to longer and longer hair. While in the past quite a few prefered the short hair attenuating the slavic face look.

That's sooo late 90's early 00's! Shaved head is becoming passe these days. :)

UK, Ireland / Are the working class in the UK now shunned in the 'new' Poland? [53]

Has anyone else noticed that most of the Poles go 'on and on' about what wonderful qualifications they all have?

So what is the name of the country in which people brag about their children being pumbers and bin men/women?

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think about Canadians? [44]

Yeah this is the worst thing about Canada! :/

No, the worts thing that came from Canada was Sum 41 and Anne of Green Gable!

Seriously though, when someone says Canada I think: Due South, DOA, James Cameron ( Terminator 1 and 2 are my fav sf movies! Avatar was shiet though!), maple syrup and hockey!

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

Kartofle is more German and ziemniaki (earthies) is more Polish.

Is it? People from the eastern past of Poland use it frequently so I would not be so sure of that. Anyway, the proper word for potatoe is pyra! :)

UK, Ireland / Poles living in the UK returning home or not? [63]

You can repeat that as many times as you want, it still won't make it true.

plk123 is no second or third generation american with polish roots. He is an expat, thus as much polish as me or you.

As for the OP, thank you for saving us before another jew-thread! A discussion about UK ammigration sounds very refreshing. ;)

History / 'Poland: A Knight Among Nations' - Book about Poland by an American Author, dated 1907 [51]

The annexation of the Polish territory was recognized by most nations; thus the country officially ceased to exist.

According to your definition of occupation, an occupied geo-political entity is not necessarily dissolved. Which means that it CAN be dissolved. Moreover, if you really want to pick on words, it doesn't say anything about recognition from other states, which means that basically both words could be used interchangeably…Well at least in this particular case.

Either way, what I do find interesting is why did you feel the urge to bring this subject up?

History / Miracle of the Vistula 80th anniversary? [56]

Pray tell..how many brave Poles died trying to flee your communist jail?

Not many, as instead of fleeing they joined Solidarity movement and fought the system.

and that they connect Germans with the end of the cold war but have rarely heard about the Solidarity or any other Pole?

Yeah, Wałęsa is only known in Poland. lol

Of course there were already groups opposing communism

Did it ever crossed your mind that Gorbatchev abandoned Brezhnev's doctrine becasue, among other reasons, the civil unrest in Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and that it happened the other way around?

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Yeah, it is, but there is also a brand of beer called that way, both unrelated. I prefer the beer though. :) Ohhh, important info, it's NOT a lager! :)

While in PiP be on the look out for Fortuna Czarne or Fortuna Miodowe. The best beer from Wielkopolska! :)

Law / Retirees immigration regulations in Poland [34]

Matyjasz I am not sure what on that blog you were pointing me to...can you clarify?

Actually I didn't have anything specific in mind present on that site , but I wanted to point you to the authors of that blog. Surely they are more informed about retiring in poland and aquaring permanent residency than any posters that have posted in this thread. Here you have their e-mail adress: piekar66@hotmail.

News / Brown's 'Bigotgate' and the debate about Poles [63]

True. There is an arrogant side of my people that I didn't nottice before joining this message board.

Still, if I were to generalize about jews, blacks or cyclist i bet that you would call me racist without any hesitation. Or am i wrong?
