I'm a Polish woman married to English/South African. We live in South Africa (we met here when I got transferred by my company - I didn't follow my husband, although I decided to stay in SA because of him).

We have 3.5 year old son and are very happy together. Questions raised by Richfilth are very important to think through - although you may not be able to answer all of them at the time.

Not many of us has answers for all possible situations - and even if we do, we often encounter circumstances that change out decision anyway.

To me it is very important that you discuss where you are going to live and raise children, so that there are no surprises. Also - what happens if either or both of you lose jobs? This can happen. You must at least have some ideas so that you don't turn your life upside down.

You are probably still young (so your parents won't probably need looking after) but thinking about it and discussing it is important.

Magdalena, i don't know where you lived, but I was never hungry or cold in Poland in 80's. I wasn't well dressed and fed with delicacies, but never cold or hungry. I was raised by a single mum (divorcee) in suburbia of a small town. No luxuries, but decent living. My father never contributed to my upbringing, my mum was all on her own, working a clerical job. So really, i don't know why you were hungry.

And I'm not saying that I'm worse off now, in fact I have a good life (and had good life in Poland before moving to South Africa), but comunism in terms of provision of basics really wasn't failing that badly.

Polonius, i didn't read article(looks like you have to register) but to me it looks like a dead law if the couple live outside Poland. How is Polish spouse going to execute Polish law outside Poland? Even if there is a court ruling, there is a loooong road from ruling to execution.

Technically you are right, but you have to wait for a while (and I think its measured in years, not in months, but correct me if I'm wrong).

But since my comment was related to PGTX who wrote that woman can't get divorce in USA and was wondering if it isn't the same in Poland, it is actually irrelevant that they can get divorced if one of the partners disappears and cannot be contacted - since this is obviously not the case here.

I would imagine anyone can get divorced anytime they like, but they both have to sign papers. What you might be referring to is that he can't be the one requesting divorce due to her being to blame (even if he wanted to claim that he is not the father) .This would make sense as you can't determine who the father is (in a non invasive way) until the child is born.

Abortion is illegal in Poland (except in case of rape and health issues of mother or baby). He is still the father and will have obligation to the child. In fact you might even be able to stay in Poland because of the baby. I don't think he would allow this to be brought up as a reason for divorce in Poland.

Revoke, if her husband works legally in Ireland, the family is entitled to free healthcare under the EU law. So yes, government paid for treatments, but the guy paid taxes, so he is entitled to get medical care his wife needs. I don't know why they didn't ask for government flight, mayby just didn't think about it?

Oxon, if you haven't got anything sympathetic to say, shut the f***up. This woman is dying. I had a friend who died of leukemia. It really isn't a 'nice' way to die. Her family probably works, would you expect them to quit their jobs and come to Ireland so that you can moan that there is more Poles in the Islands? Scotty, I traveled with my son to Poland couple of times and never had this problem. Same situation as yours, I'm Polish, my husband is British/ South African, our son now has 3 passports... Only problem we had was in South Africa, where we were told that the kid must travel in and out on SA passport. He went to Poland on British passport and no-one said anything. In fact if a child already has another passport they are not obliged to have a Polish one.

Either mother or father can apply. I applied for my son's passport recently (father is British) so it's not only father that can apply. The father had to sign papers that he agrees to the child having Polish passport, it worked the same as with British passport, where I had to sign the form of consent.

Foreigner, we will never know the truth. There would be no point commenting anything if it was only to be based on facts. Note the little word "if"in the last sentence of my previous post. AK, maternity leave is to look after a child, not to do cooking and cleaning. You surely don't realise how difficult it is to try to do something with a tiny baby strapped to you. Babies DO NOT sleep all day. Mine would dose of for few minutes, then wake up, then dose of again. And so on. And taking care of herself is absolutely normal for a woman, the guy is an idiot if he thinks that having a baby turns a women into lactating cooking and cleaning machine.
