Life / What are those scars and cuts on many Polish guys' arms? [21]

i still wondering i have seeing many polish guys with cuts marks or scars on their arms??

Those are called sznyty. Probably from Yiddish - to cut.

They are cuts made with razors to show "bravery." In the criminal world, bravery has it's own twisted meaning. Some wannabe bad guys self mutilate too.

Sznyty - common term referring to scarring, which is the result of deliberate self-harm of individual who is wishing in this way for possible clearly and permanently mark the skin of his body. It is a specific ornament which should indicate the courage and resilience of the person to pain, or identify this person as the associated to a particular community. In primitive societies it's a method of decorating the body, in civilized societies is popular among criminals, as prison inmates and in numerous youth subcultures. It is also a method of proving "masculinity" among adolescents, mostly male, by proving resistancy to pain.

Sometimes the cuts also makes a person who wants to overcome in this way own psychic pain, for example it can be an expression of despair resulting from the separation from a loved one. Sometimes such cutting can become even a habit. Such persons can then gradually cut on all, still intact parts of the body. This indicates that it is a form of building relationships with the world by making yourself the pain which suppose to feel it. Often this is an attempt to draw attention on oneself.

Travel / Modlin airport in Poland - closed again! [28]

Right, Modlin Airport Scam is the example of this government's good planning, ingenuity and competence. First of all, it is completely unnecessary. I learned to fly Cessnas on an airport with more traffic than Chopin Airport and with it's new terminal and shuttle from the city center it could serve well enough city this size.

Then, there is no direct shuttle to the Modlin Airport from Warsaw. You have to take a train and then catch a bus. That is hardly good planning for a brand new airport serving all tourist destinations. Two kids, third in a stroller, luggage, and a nightmare before you get to the airport.

Now, the runway. Surface too thin and substandard materials. Certified to PO specifications. Those specs state that there is no money to be made in an honest job well done the first time. Słomiana inwestycja straight out of Miś.

Most investments under this administration are done this way. Change is coming our way though. The lemmings are starting to wake up and it won't be long before they will turn on PO.

Travel / Modlin airport in Poland - closed again! [28]

More interestingly, you see nothing wrong with rampant incompetence and corruption of the failing PO regime and would like to divert the discussion from the issue at hand. It is PO government inspectors who certified the clearly substandard job at Modlin. Now the show will start over. More taxpayer money to be passed around PO buddies and soon Modlin Airport will be the most expensive airstrip in Europe. Maybe it can top the National Stadium job( any time there is a football game you need to put new turf), or the most expensive roads in Europe that just cannot be built under this administration. Do say something interesting about the Warsaw Metro or the tunnel fiasco under this government. (BTW, interesting means not whether the ex PZPR freak will get one of the most important jobs in gov't).

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

What does boom mean??

You don't seem bright enough to comprehend the date of the beginning of this thread, so let me explain it to you. Six years is a lifetime when it comes to real estate trends.

Polonia / Is Holland antipolish? [29]

I'd say he should just enjoy the weed and be honest in his dealings and not worry about much. If he has a chance, try to improve their much degraded gene pool and return safely.

Life / Poles love of knights and battle. [10]

moved from another thread

The level of constant endeavors to diminish our heritage among some of you amazes me.

If you have a chance, catch the BBC documentary on the Teutonic Knights. I happened to watch it yesterday. King Jagiełło was dressed like a peasant who grabbed a sword and luckily not a pitchfork, and the battle flags had the present day eagle on them. The Lithuanians' coat of arms was like something resembling an astrological sign and on and on. The Order had near magical powers and were saintly, of course, bringing Jesus to the world and beyond.

Life / sweet words to use in Poland with shopkeepers [14]

Yes, because your life is soooo busy and you must do your shopping very quickly... to rush back to your laptop. You should be careful, or you'll age into one of those hags who breathe on the person's neck before them. I chat with sellers and in most shops I go to regularly and have nice friendly relationships with them. Not that I need to, but I can walk out now and go shopping with no money and come back with any groceries I need. Same with pub bills.

Anyway, my point was to use some diminutives as they will sound nice and funny, coming from a foreigner, and that will most likely put a smile on even a stone faced seller. Gumishu had the right idea, and it's important to learn the phrases correctly , so they are understood.

Agent J-23, a NKVD agent under cover in the Abwehr. In communist times sold to the public as a Polish hero. You can see him daily on cable.

Travel / Trip to Poznan and Torun [19]

From Warszawa Centralna to Torun Główny the 7 am train is direct in February. You'll be at the Old Town at 11.

When you arrive in Torun follow everyone to the bus stop. Buy a ticket in a kiosk just before the bus stop. It will be evident. Any bus will do 25,27... It's a short ride to the Old Town. Get off on the stop just past the bridge (Plac Rapackiego). On your right is the Old Town.

A must? In the winter it is less attractive and the lively college scene in the multitude of cellar joints is at night. Climb the old City Hall tower and see The Copernicus House on...ul.Kopernika. On this street you can catch a taxi back to the train station if you prefer, 15 zl. max. See what's at the Planetarium. Buy shoes and books. :) Enjoy how much nicer people are.

Language / How to address a postcard to a family in Poland? [7]

But it certainly is among cultured people. I received cards this year with W.P. and Sz.P. (Polonius mentioned this above), so do not mislead people.

It would be better to say " My family and I stopped using polite forms in XXXX and we are proud of it."

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

I really would like to know what each tick on x axis represents - months? years?

If a truck was about to mow you over, you no doubt would be most concerned whether it was red or blue.

Just check, what is written and most of the time it is written for the sake of writing, very much removed from reality.

Most of the foreigners who post here, especially the "experts" on all things Polish are far removed from reality in Poland. They give a very distorted view of what goes on here. This should not be surprising as they have limited access to our culture, language, and little understanding of historical events that shape our present situation. They would scoff at, perhaps even ridicule, a Pole who in a few years living in his expat enclave would try to "explain" England to you, for example. Dolpho comes to mind as a perfect example. Last month, he claimed Ruch Palikota is the second largest party in Poland, where in fact RP has not one senator, 4% popularity, and if there were elections at present, they would not even get into Parliament. People here actually take him seriously though.

Anyway, reality is frightening and it is natural to avoid it. If you want reality, start with how the communists prepared in the mid-80's for the "fall" of communism. Understanding this would help understanding the present. Temat rzeka.

So, your wife doesn't care that you're broke, unemployed, and in debt, just as long you're not as bad off as the Smiths next door. She even says you're doing great. lol

Hate to tell you, but 1.4% growth and on the verge of recession is not considered a boom, in economic terms.

Polo took over most of the topics

Oh, Afro, you're free to start a topic at any time.

Ya I see more and more people moving back to Poland with the way the economy is going

Polish economy is really booming right about now, ain't it?

Also for me it was so much easier and cheaper to start a business here than it would have been back in the states..

I'm sure that's humorous news to everybody reading this. Could you compare tax rates for those of us not in business? Thanks.

News / Poland Secession [5]

some right wing politicians claim EU is evil.

Of course, left-wing politicians used to claim that the Soviet Union was not evil.

It's all about sovereignty of Poland, which leftists generally do not care about.

Life / Age chauvinism in Poland regarding young people [17]

How do you "feel" what people in other countries are "prone" to do? Read Voltaire what he had to say about youth of his age. Voltaire was this French guy in France. I'd mention the old Greek guys from Greece, but you'd probably think it has no relevance to today's enlightened youth.

Do you try to teach your Dad how to make children and are upset he "doesn't get it?"

What are the implications of that state of affairs in your, outsiders, eyes?

Sweetie, here is my advice, say things in a clear and simple way that make sense, and older people will respect that.

News / Poland's Guy Fawkes [88]

They photographed the BBs (rounds of ammunition(sic)), but they failed to photograph 4,000 kg of explosives?

They arrested him on Nov. 9th and made a sensation on the 21st, in which ...they made an appeal to politicians not to reorganize WSI, I mean ABW?

Won't be surprised when they announce that he was inspired by Ted Kaczynski and arrest Jaroslaw Kaczynski and delegalize all opposition.

In other news that day, sign-ups in Wroclaw to see a specialist in a public health clinic are for 2020.
Poznan bought high-speed trains that in no way in hell can go at high-speed.
and...
Pawlak did not kiss Piechocinski, but kissed all other PSL stiffs(no joke).
Kasia W. arrested for two-weeks after she moved to another town and stopped making visits to the police station. She enjoyed her freedom although she admitted to murdering her infant child and dumping the body in the woods.

Stefan did say something smart once without biting anyone:

PO najprawdopodobniej skończy tak jak wszystkie ruchy, które spaja jedynie cynizm, hipokryzja i konformizm.

" PO will most likely finish like all movements bound together by only cynicism, hypocrisy, and conformity." .

Life / Czas honoru (Time of honoru) TV serial [38]

Completely? Or is this just another 1jola crusade rant?

Konstytucja, godło i flaga nie są potrzebne ani Polsce, ani Włochom, Francuzom i innym państwom Europy. Więcej zyskamy jeśli pozbędziemy się tych fałszywych symboli" - twierdzi Palikot.

He also thinks English should be Poland's official language, although he reserves the right of Poles speaking in Polish among each other:

Należy podjąć wysiłek zbudowania wspólnego, jednego państwa europejskiego, z językiem angielskim jako językiem urzędowym, ale z językiem polskim jako językiem lokalnym"

Enough about that clown.

Remind us who signed up again to drop bombs on those symbols that he claims to hold dearly?

Sorry, but it's impossible to take someone seriously who was willing to bomb, maim and kill his countrymen for a few dollars.

I thought I had explained to you what I was doing on Her Majesty's property during the Cold War (about the the time your mummy was pregnant with you) , but perhaps you missed it since the mods suspended you about that time. Here it is again, and be sure to scroll the whole page since Sobieski wanted clarification. Random Chat Thread (deleted periodically)

Except the "clown" happens to be leader of the 3rd biggest party in the Sejm and could easily find himself playing kingmaker after the next election.

No, dufus, the ex-communists are the third largest party in Sejm. Kingmaker? Your understanding of Polish politics is, well, that of a foreigner with a few years in the country. To make you feel better, you remind me of myself when I was a teenager.

And you get upset when I call you a Marxist.

I never said i watched all of it, i stopped when they started shifting from a historical adventure to a family oriented drama.

Oh, I know, those Polish and Jewish family tragedies, you found so soapy. Perhaps because you can't relate.

Few examples of historical buffs:
1. Bank robbery was entirely incorrect, not even the bank and year were correct.

This is not a story of four particular AK soldiers. It is not meant to be "correct." It is not a documentary.

Executions were not on the agenda until much later.

Right.

The Wawer massacre refers to the execution of 107 Polish civilians on the night of 26 to 27 December 1939 by the Nazi German occupiers of Wawer (near Warsaw), Poland. The execution was a response to the deaths of two German NCOs. 120 people were arrested and 114 shot, of which 7 survived.
It is considered to be one of the first large scale massacres of Polish civilians by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wawer_massacre

3. I wont even go into uniforms, equipment and weapons.

I also know something but won't tell. A friend of mine said that the Jewish Police uniform was inaccurate because the hat band was green and he was sure it was supposed to be blue. He was referring to professor's former student in the ghetto who made false promises for money. My friend was not right. Why?

Simple, all Poles are heroes and everybody else is evil.

You clearly have not been watching the show.

There is no mention of the thousands of Poles that profited from the invasion, rated out Jews

Just like there is no mention of thousands of Jews who profited from the invasion, rated out fellow Jews and Poles, but there were individual stories illustrating both events.

or were simply indifferent.

Raise your hand if you are sure you would help your neighbor when you know if caught doing so you, your wife, and your kids will be shot.

Ask your wife first.

but they opted for a Sunday evening show with love stories set in the 40ties.

They did not make a show for men who want to see only the military side of partisan war. I'll have to agree though that there was too much skirt chasing.

Given the amount of blood spilled in the name of those symbols, perhaps he has a point.

Which symbols are important to you besides the hammer and the sickle? Weren't you Scottish before you became free of any nationality, and became "European?"

You know that false symbol on the cover of your passport? You might want to burn it. Hold on to your principles.

As for Palikot. Mind you he is a member of the Parliament and he thinks that the Polish Constitution should be gotten rid of. He sits under the flag and the eagle in that parliament and gets paid for it by Polish taxpayers. He is our biggest clown in politics ever.

Life / British living in Poland - documentary [42]

Failing? you mean if not for the round table communism would fail anyway? I don't think so!

Communism did not fail at the round table talks. They prepared for transformation and retained key sectors of government and industry. If communism failed why did the communist criminals gen.Jaruzelski become the President and gen.Kiszczak the Minister of Internal Affairs? It's not really a question that I need answering but 99% viewing this forum have no clue about "failure"of communism in Poland. Why would they give up power when they could just share it with selected "opposition?"

News / More Poles speak English than French or Spanish! [34]

it is done by U.E. funds so it costs close to 0 zl to Polish state

So, Poland contributes close to 0% to EU funds and gets 100%. Not bad. Who said we are not clever, and the rest of Europe are daft?
