Food / POLISH RECIPES! [287]

A long way off the mark. Szarlotka is very different and not a crumble. Crumbles go back many centuries in England. They should traditionally be made with rolled oats. Very different from the Polish cake Szarlotka which is closer to the French tradition - a simpler version of Apple Charlotte (they even borrowed the name).

The Polish one, not in any way a crumble is only made with apples, and many would say has to be (or ought to be) made with one specific type of apples.

Things can go the other way too though. Alsatian Choucroute is directly based on Polish bigos, with the addition (and great improvement) of wine.

Work / Possibly changing jobs in Lodz - higher salary [19]

I like living in Europe and I like Poland. I have made friends here and I've got a girlfriend here. Even my Polish is getting better

Every reason to stay :-)

You sound happy here and that's the key to everything.

Don't take DominicB's comments too seriously. He seems to expect every time to follow an American-style corporate career path (conveniently ignoring the fact that more people end their careers closer to the post room than the boardroom). Being in a place that makes you happy, with a person that makes you happy and doing something you like is everything.

JollyRomek is right. The current company offers internal trainings as well as externals, but salary there is way too low for me. Offering the room + flight makes a foreigner refrain from leaving it. Too scary, especially when you are not an EU citizen

Unfortunately BPOs by their very nature are ruthless bottom-feeders. Extreme capitalism, replacing whole departments of employees, hiring people under illiberal terms and conditions and skimming off their cut. Fine if you're happy there, but not for everybody. This other job you mention sounds slightly better. You'll have a chance to save a bit and if you buy your flight carefully and in advance it wouldn't be so expensive.

Don't listen to people like Dominic. It is usually people like him, who shout the loudest on internet forums, because in real life they have nothing to say in their "dead end jobs".

Spot on, there's an element of trolling in there, plus a one-size-fits-all dose of US capitalism that they can frankly keep there. It just doesn't ring true.

You should take up Jolly's suggestion and contact him by PM. Sounds like a useful contact.

News / Korwin Mikke: re-badged American Jews pushing Poland into war [33]

It blows my mind that some media outlets still give him airtime. Like there is not enough insanity out there already.

Remember there's a disproportionate amount of political programming on TV, all those stodgy discussions between centre right politicians trying to outdo each other in looking serious, so Korwin-Mikke with his daft costume, extreme comments and self-publicising soundbites is a bit of light relief. Basically rent-a-clown.

Life / Warsaw M2 line? Will it ever run? [8]

Nice stations. Heavily criticised by some however I really like the bright colour schemes.

Here's a link to the route it should eventually take:
metro.waw.pl/ii-linia-metra-109.html
It's a great shame there doesn't seem to be a stop at the sidings by Kozia Gorka (an estate where the city house families who've been evicted from council flats elsewhere due to unpaid rent - a kind of 'Dodge City'). Communications are very poor there anyway and a station would be good.

Plus of course there's the projected 3rd line, however that's a long, long way off.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

Who said that? You're going off topic, however it's worth pointing out that you're making a lot of assumptions about the way things turned out. Though personally mistreating clergy was undeniably wrong, the rcc had behaved appallingly there and change was needed. A victory by the anti-Franco people (the leadership of which was most certainly NOT 'Stalinist') would have been an improvement on the bloodthirsty regime that they ended up with.

Don't forget either the sacrifice made by all those Poles who served in the International Brigade.

Anyway, better not to try to take the thread further off topic, not least because the thread is about remembering one of the greatest Poles of the Twentieth (and Twentyfirst) Century.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

The crimes you mention pale into insignificance compared with the crimes of the other side. Fortunately over the things have become more moderate and in any case organised religion (itself one of the totalitarianisms of the Twentieth Century) is withering naturally.

The environment that the generation we are talking about grew up in was one of extremes. Better to be slightly closer to the Left than the Right in my opinion, but a horror of either extreme predicated much of the moderate world-view of that generation.

News / Korwin Mikke: re-badged American Jews pushing Poland into war [33]

Me too. I suppose reality's too boring for some people or they feel so impotent in life that they look for someone to blame.

Fortunately, nobody takes that Korwin-Mikke fool seriously. It'll end up smeared all over the Internet on US conspiracy websites though.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

I'm not sure things are getting worse, and the less pseudo-patriotism the better. Worth mentioning that there were some pretty unsavoury figures in PL pre-war, including admirers of Franco, Dolfuss etc as well as endemic corruption. These factors partly shaped the generation Bartoszewski was part of and has a surprisingly long-lasting effect on the political landscape.

Fortunately people like him reacted to it by being totally different.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

All politics in a developed country involves deals and accommodating conflicting and opposing interests, ideally for the greater good. Bartoszewski and his generation survived times (pre-war Endeks, the horrors of war, the Stalin terror, the PRL, and all the chaos and panic when it fell) where that either wasn't possible or necessarily took an extreme and much criticised form. During any and all of those times you can't expect a public figure in Poland to act like one in Sweden - to nie Kanada.

He was however head and shoulders above so many other in those times and there were still some very good people in office during those periods (except of course for the war). Regardless, by the way, of their DNA.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

Very often it's true, and no sign whatsoever that Prof. Bartoszewski had any ulterior motives. To introduce stuff about Stalin's concept of democracy or eminences grisés is just a red herring. And off topic too.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

It's good to know who's running the country and why.

One is a matter of public record and the other in the manifesto.

No such thing as 'over-representation' here, the voters choose.

News / Władysław Bartoszewski died [35]

Not really, given firstly that the parliament in question was mostly Poles and secondly that most politicians are from the urban political class.

You'd probably find something similar in most of the 1980s UK cabinets though who's counting?

Neither charming or not charming, unless you're the sort who might think there's something wrong with that for whatever reason.

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

Same here. Perhaps they've changed, or it's a small town that isn't used to people from outside PL. I suggest PKO BP at the Rotunda by metro centrum. They opened an account for me years ago with just a passport and a contract of employment. Before even my residency and work permit had come through.

I've also used BPH, Citibank, Fortis and Nordea without a pesel or showing more than my passport and occasionally a contract.

Travel / The cheapest way to get from Lublin to Kiev - 2 days trip [7]

Cheapest way would be by Bus. Takes between 12 - 14

The night train is about 15 hours and costs around 250. The main drawback of that is that you can't buy the ticket online however it's a lot more comfortable than the bus.

History / Politics of Poland in past, present and future; your opinion [21]

Fortunately the fascist nationalist "parties", both of you support don't even make 1% in any Polish election.

Yes. Unfortunately they make a disproportionate amount of noise. At least they aren't taken seriously.

Solidarity is in power and communists are opposition.

There are ex-Party people in almost all modern parties.

The movement was named after Janusz Palikot,

He's withdrawn more or less now. We should watch the Greens in the future.

PO for all their faults are good stewards of the economy, slightly less conservative on social issues than PiS, resist the more egregious demands of the church especially regarding in-vitro and are not anti-immigrationists.

Travel / Getting from Krakow to Warsaw [99]

So maybe your friend could buy a train ticket for you at the ticket window at the station earlier?

There are machines now at the station and no queues for them at that time of day - should be quick.

(Warszawa Śródmieście /Warsaw Downtown/ is almost the same station as Warszawa Centralna, they are connected via an underground tunnel)

Confusing for a stranger to Warsaw, and annoying for someone with luggage. There are 2 flights of stairs, then a long platform, then up a moving ramp that is not switched on. Then you're only actually in the Galeria Wschodniowa. It's actually quite a walk.

the bus is even better in that the bus stop is much closer to the exit from the terminal than the train station

Yes - in fact (much as I hate them) the airport bus is almost always better, except in the rush hour when ul. Zi W gets jammed or if you're going to Zachodnia,

Maybe you could rearrange the meeting with your friend so that he would wait for you at Warszawa Zachodnia? It's smaller, so it would be easier to find each other, and it is very simple to get from Warszawa Centralna to Warszawa Zachodnia.

A good idea, however it isn't that small so they'd have to agree to meet on a particular platform.

It depends on from where are you coming, but if from Schengen area, then there is no passport control, so it's faster.

LTN - WAW so it's the barrier and maybe the queue. A lot depends on what other flights have come in just before. This can cause problems. Not just the queues but also a longer wait for luggage. For a 1750 arrival it isn't too bad at all - no other non-Schengen just before, and a couple of Schengen flights in the previous few minutes. Businessy ones so probably not too much luggage.

If there's no flight delay and not too much mucking about with remote stands, he should have plenty of time to get the 175 bus and make it to the TLK Krakow train with 15 minutes to spare.

Let us know if you get to Krakow on time and OK.

Real Estate / Options for dealing with dishonest landlord in Poland [36]

I agree with Terri, you should say that you're going to report them to the Tax Authorities and see what they have to say about this.

If he's as much a git as the poster suggests, I'd suspect he'd have plenty to say and really not a good idea. Threatening th etax office is something to do after he leaves should the landlord become difficult,

Life / One advantage of living in Poland: less commerpop nonsense [19]

And we all know where carpe diem led the Roman Empire. The fat, flabby and decadent Romans were defeated by the lean and mean barbarians.

And the world eventually became a better place.

Today's promoters of preversion, pornography and unbridled hedonism should at least know that it will happen again and they are greatly accelerating the process.

As it will continue to do .

Travel / Getting from Krakow to Warsaw [99]

You could get a taxi to Warsaw Station to be safe. The main risk is a flight delay, however these are mostly rare. If you're out of the airport hall in time for that 175 bus at 33 past the hour you'll be fine. If by a miracle you're out in time for the 15 past bus, you'll be laughing.

Good luck.

Life / One advantage of living in Poland: less commerpop nonsense [19]

A lot about RCC sins all over the world (and yes, the RCC has many sins, indeed), but never a word about "Asian" (in fact Muslim) rapists in Britain on the PF!

Probably because the forum is about Poland rather than the UK. Though it has to be said that there are perjorative posts here about Muslims at least twice daily.

carpe diem hedonism

Carpe diem in Latin from Ancient Rome and hedonism deriving from Classical Greek... And you're ranting about the modern world as if all this is new when in fact the core of the issue is that you're getting old.

Life / Where can I get a good American Haircut in Poznan? [18]

None of these are 100% what I mean, but they should give a clue as to the way barbers in Poznan will do the back unless you make sure they don't.

Life / Where can I get a good American Haircut in Poznan? [18]

Yes. You might have to (I had to in Poznan) make sure they don't leave it bushy at the back in that kind of mini-mullet that seems to be popular among the bigos and Tyskie crowd.
