History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

@jon357
So why did they keep on settling here? They weren't the only minority and you know it. So why is it so freaking difficult to admit Poland was the most welcoming place for them?

They were Jews from the USSR so I'd say Soviet. Why Russian only?

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

That wasn't advice. That was being sarcastic towards me and another poster. I still haven't got the answer what was your British grandparents' generation experience with the Red Army.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

@jon357
I'm afraid I'm too stupid to understand your chicken and egg metaphor. Are you suggesting Polish antisemitism results from the number of Jews that used to live in Poland?

Jews started to settle in Poland around the 13th century - a while after the foundation of the state. So why the claim it belonged to them as much as to Poles?

@Taxpaying voter
Jews made about 1% of the Polish society after the war in the 1940/50s. Yet over 35% of the employees of the Ministry of National Security were Jewish.

Some of them were Soviet Jews.

The reality is - even though none of the people who hate Poland will admit it - that Poland wasn't more hostile towards Jews than any other country. In fact, it was a better place to live. That's the reason why there were so many Jews in Poland. Poland owed nothing to Jews when they were allowed to settle here.

Yet Poland gets nothing but accusations.

@jon357
What are you saying? Poland belonged to Jews as much as to the tribes that created the country?
Poland's geographical proximity to what place?
If the country had been hostile they wouldn't have settled here in the first place.

@Lyzko
wy did Jews stay in such a hostile country?

Christians believe Jesus died for human sins. So it doesn't matter who killed him.

Genealogy / Information on family name: Berizko [11]

Olga's maiden name must have been Zając (literally hare) - quite a popular surname.
Stefania was popular in the past but Zoja is extremely rare - probably more frequent in the former USSR.
Do you mind asking what religion they were?

But I'm thinking mainly about the past.
There must have been some significant reasons why so many chose Poland and stayed. For generations.
Didn't Poland have the biggest Jewish community? How? After all, Poland is said to have been so hostile and antisemitic.

Genealogy / Information on family name: Berizko [11]

Neither Berizko nor Boryzcko look Polish. They seem to have been misspelled. There are several surnames that sound similar, though: Bereszko, Boryczka, Boryczko. There are also some people born in Russia with similar names like Jana Berezko-Marggrander or Jurij Bieriezko.

There are 12 villages called Nowosiolki in Poland, 7 in Belarus, 5 in Ukraine, 1 in Lithuania and there were several places of this name in pre-war Poland. If Szymon's Nowosiolki was located in the USSR, it won't be in present day Poland.

Nowash doesn't look Polish either.
But all the first names are spelled correctly. So they might have been Poles who had been living in Kresy - part of pre-war Poland that was incorporated into the USSR after WW2, parts if present day Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

I'm sorry but that doesn't answer my simple question.
Why did Jews choose Poland?
I keep being told about Polish antisemitism and hostility towards Jews. I'm not going to defend my arguments anymore- I've been doing it since I joined the forum. This time I'd love to hear a logical answer to the question above.

There are tons of other countries with better weather, probably less violent history and apparently more friendly people. So why did so many Jews choose Poland?

If the country had been hostile, they wouldn't have settled here. Unless they were idiots.
What do you have against gentiles

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

There's nothing wrong about coming from nobility, is there?
You're surprised about the negative view of the Russians in part of Europe, well, if you read into the history, you won't be surprised anymore.

My grandparents weren't part of nobility. Just poor people, forced labourers during the war - the untermenschen.
I asked about Britain and the Red Army as you mentioned your grandparents' generation in response to my post about my grandparents' generation's experiences with the Red Army.

After all you claim I should read more history - enlighten me. Teach me something I don't know.

@dolnoslask
I'm really sorry to hear what happened to your family.
As for the Red Army, well obviously some need to rationalise why the Allies were so willing to cooperate with Stalin.
As for the poster in question, if I were him, I'd definitely leave Poland if I hated all things Polish.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

@Crnogorac3
I don't think it makes me hate Jews but honestly I no longer see any point in denying any arguments antisemites make.
What's the point really? I'll be accused of antisemitism anyway. I'm Polish after all.

You can pretty much say the same think about certain Brits and Americans and their attitude towards Poles.
But that's obviously ok.

@Taxpaying voter
Thank you. I read a lot about history. Do you?
There was also my grandparents' generation - first hand history. Like my parents' neighbour who talked about women dragged from a crowd by Red Army soldiers to be raped.

Or my grandma's comment: Russians were even worse.

Because it is a complicated thing.

I'm just sick and tired of hearing all over again about Polish antisemitism. As if there was nothing else in Polish-Jewish relations.
It exists in Poland, just like everywhere else. I'm afraid not all Jews are tolerant towards other people or religions, either.

As for Britain declaring war on Germany, I'm afraid the 'phoney war' sums it up.
As for the Red Army liberating Europe, it's not what you read in your post-Yalta history books, it's what people experienced here. Were there some good guys among them? Sure, so were there among Wehrmacht soldiers.

How did other countries help Poland in 1939? Most didn't do much. I don't think they thought the war would spread all over the world.

As for trading with countries that had invaded other European countries, well ... how moral ...

So you're saying there were no Jews in pre-partitioned Poland similarly to England for centuries after their expulsion?

Not the whole country, though. And there were exceptions to the rule (Jewish doctors, fairs etc), just like de non tolerandis Christianis in Jewish quarters. @Taxpaying voter

I remember a footage of Roosevelt saying the USA wouldn't get involved in the war-after the release of 'Siege' but that was something new ...

@jon357
I should have written 'England', not 'Britain'. There were no Jews in England for several centuries.
I have also read about some anti-semitic attacks in the UK recently. What do you mean when you say that you have no anti-semitic laws? Do we?

As for what Poles say, we're not politically correct. In reality, most haven't met a single Jew in their life but they see 'Jews' pretty much everywhere. And blame them for all the things bad.

There was antisemitism before WW2. How did so many Jews end up in Poland? Because they were expelled from other countries. Just to mention Spain or Britain.

As for WW2, it was the Germans who started it. Poles were victims, too. My family was! Ethnic Poles. How was your family affected?
Some Poles and some Jews collaborated with Germans. Face it!

Classifieds / Quran translation - I am from UK and looking for a muslim Polish man in UK [75]

@Truthfinder
Yes, we earn 200 pounds a month, eat kiełbasa and pierogi for every meal and keep polar bears as pets :)

Face it, the Quran has been translated to Polish. If you want a Polish Muslim with good diction you need to pay really good money.

Also, 200 pounds for an unspecified number of hours is little - in Poland, too. It's far less from the minimum wage even. And if you really want someone from Poland, are you going to fund their flight and accommodation?
