News / An end to Drug Prohibition in Poland and EU states? [9]

"This is a hybrid, which was generated by the Vietnamese. Most of cannabis have about 0.2 percent THC [content narcotic - ed.]. And here we are dealing with plants with 20-30 percent of THC!"

Which just goes to show you how incompetent the writers are. Industrial hemp contains well over 0.2%, so according to the article, you'd get way more high by smoking one of those hippie frocks than smoking a splif.

Drugs are already decriminalized for personal use in Portugal and the Czech Republic, freeing up their police forces to focus on real crime.

I'll be heading over to the US for about a month. I figure I might as well let you folks know it goes. I have enough time downrange to be able to differentiate between life in Poland, and that of the US. I travel back and forth a couple of times a year, so I figure I might as well give you an account of the trip.

Right now we're T-26 hours from the first flight. I'm just taking a backpack with my laptop, a couple of books, a pair of underwear and socks...I'll buy the rest when I get there, Walmart is cheap. First flight is 0530 from Wroclaw, so I figure I'll just drink through Friday night and get delivered at the airport. Then it's off to Warsaw-Brussels-Chicago-Dallas-Home...sadistic? yes! I put on the kneepads and pleasured a friend at AA, business from Brussels on out, sweet! Will let you know when I get to the promised land!

Import people, logistics, retail, state governments , municipalites all benefit from Asian goods coming in.

Those are all markups to the original cost of production, which is well over 50% of the end cost to the consumer...which quite a few consumers need to borrow in order to afford.

I'm starting to notice nascent movements of "Buy American".. I'm very proud to say. I think this will continue.

It would be nice to see, but I think the majority of Americans aren't willing to give up quality of life (through cheap goods) for the benefit of others. Unfortunately. People, in general, think in personal terms, not broad terms.

No, you don't but it's advantageous in case of emergencies. It's often justified in funding education.. home investments, etc. It shouldn't be relied on though.

In emergencies, sure. Emergencies. That's it. Buying a house, fair enough, you pay half of it in cash, the rest on payments, if you're credit worthy. Education, absolutely not. That is one the biggest problems in the US higher education system. So much credit has been made available that the costs are no longer affordable to people that save up. The concept of a college fund is laughable now.

The point is that it's changing.. Mindsets aren't changed over night. Incrementally things have gotten better. At least the acceptance has come in that we have a problem.

Hopefully it will continue to change after credit becomes more fluid again...

Credit and conspicuous consumption are not mutually exclusive.

No they're not, but there is a very obvious relationship.

Sure, eradicate most of the debt but going back to some 18th century life of subsistance is fairly idiotic if you want to maintain what we have and push it forward.

Credit is NOT needed to survive, if so, that's a sign of a hopelessly broken economy. You borrow money at interest in order to invest for a greater return, not for satisfaction through consumption.

Our consumption rates lower prices on good.. thus bringing in peope from other countries to shop here. You don't think that's an advantage?

Are we consuming our own products? Who is benefiting from cheap Chinese goods which Americans have to borrow money from foreign entities (Japan and China) to to finance?

Actually, consumer debt is on the wane since all the b/s really came about.

On the wane, but still atrocious. I really wish more Americans would invest in their country instead of in their "bling"...

I tend to disagree with you on that. It's gotten to the point where things like debt don't matter. It was a source of pride 30 years ago not to have to rely on someone else to pay for your consumption. Credit is evil and has killed the middle class in the US. Credit is good for business, absolutely terrible for consumers.

You were the one not too long ago saying that people didn't have that problem in your area when I pointed out how much money people actually have working in Oklahoma. There is quite a bit of conspicuous consumption that goes on in the US. People go in to debt in order to consume. It's crazy. We need a change in mentality in the US. Saving and investment based as opposed to consumption based.

Move, these are responsible people we're talking about right? The ones that put away money during the good times so that they could ride out the hard times. People that furthered themselves while they could and made themselves more attractive to employers, and didn't just spend money on conspicuous consumption. You've already mentioned that people in your area don't have a problem and aren't struggling, so what's the problem? A well qualified individual won't have a problem finding a job, even right now. I see that when I look at my friends. The ones that are doing work that is easily replaceable aren't having too much luck. The ones that have special qualifications are still more or less naming their own price.

My comment was, if I'm supporting some bum on welfare, I might as well be allowed to choose who I sponsor. I still see no difference between sponsoring a worthless begging lazy American and a worthless begging lazy illegal immigrant, they're both equally worthless to me.

Check out the link I provided earlier about the human costs of the illegal immigration.

It's the same arguments that were made about every wave of immigration. But like I said, I'm for an all or nothing approach.

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Wait Convex are we talking about the same two cities?

It's a nice place. Roads were well taken care of, greenery was manicured, no graffiti, no trash laying around. I really liked it.

You mean you've been to some alternate reality Belarus? I agree with people but Mińsk is rolling in its own filth, thing i found great initially later not so much is that their meals consist of dinner, dinner and even more dinner.

As far as "cleanest cities in Europe", Minsk ranks pretty high for me. Dunno, obviously commie as all hell, but I liked it :)

That depends, Poles are persecuted if they go into politics or celebrate their identity too much, Angelika Borys though is a political wh0re.

Don't know enough to comment, I'll stfu on that.

Anyway Belarus is much much better off than the dump they call Ukraine.

Without getting Nathans panties in a knot, I tend to agree...The countryside in Belarus is a lot more like Romania/Bulgaria.

of course you wouldn't, you don't live here.

For a couple of months out of the year I do. That's enough for me, maybe not for you, but that's irrelevant. Feel free to ignore the rest of the post though...in particular the part about an everything or nothing approach.

we let people in because we needed them

We let people in because there were no immigration laws on the books. Unemployment in the major cities was incredibly high during the waves of Irish, German, and Polish immigration.

Anyway, couple of stupid facts for everyone:

The murder rate in the US is near an all-time low for the last 60 years.
Apparently Americans are making more money than ever.
Unemployment is nearly 10% (officially) which is high, but not exceptionally so.

So, what exactly is the problem? I mean, other than household debt, of course. Is property crime up? Hospitals going bankrupt?

Are the statistics lies?

It is available at finer gas stations in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Bulgaria :)

I can't explain why... I haven't seen any here (other than in the specialty shops).

Which makes perfect business sense. Work two years, take the capital and invest it into something that you want to do. If the risk is worth the reward for some people, let them them go for it.

With the situation in Mexico, would you say that there is a good argument for asylum seekers?

I wouldn't mind opening up the borders. Alternatively, I would mind executing employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. One or the other, not this in-between stuff. If we hadn't turned into a touchy feel welfare state, there wouldn't be a problem with allowing anyone in. The negative aspects of immigration is probably more of an effect of where the US is headed rather than the cause of the problems. People got lazy, and they got into massive debt. Individuals, municipalities, businesses, the federal government.

I disagree with "giving people land" but people coming over to find work and a life, I have no problem with that.

It would also free up a lot of resources to fight crime, which is the problem...

Nothing. Poland would probably have to pump in Billions of euro into Brest before it would even look like a city...

Brest, like Minsk, is in excellent condition. Belarus is one of the cleanest most well taken care of countries that I've ever been to. People are great too. Political system, not so much.

I heard the Belarusian goverment is very generous to the poles inside their country

So much persecution that they decide to stay there...Even though there is a city named "Polack"....hmmm

I thought they would get social security and tax returns under their assumed identity which might be someone's actual social security number.

The IRS tends to frown on multiple people filing using the same SS#, interestingly enough, they don't seem to mind having the same SS# pay in for a while..which plays into the second part:

Unless the documents aren't even remotely real, which would be easy to bust if everything's computerized. It would be easy to see who is fake and who isn't.

That's the easier route. Most businesses don't crosscheck, and quite a few states don't either.
