News / Polish-Scottish American, Chris Ferguson, commands final Space Shuttle mission [49]

He's also of Scottish ancestry through his father, who had nothing to do with Poland.

Not really worth claiming as Polish to be honest - you'd probably have to go back to 1795 to find an ancestor of his who was actually a Polish citizen.

I am proud that he is a Polish American and making history as the Commander in chief of the final space shuttle mission. WTG Chris Ferguson!

Feedback / Why are there so many on here, who do not like Poland [150]

It has nothing to do with Poles setting themselves up and everything to do with malcontented, frustrated, hapless and disgruntled types posting and they pop up on every forum. It's not unusual and certainly not specific to PF. It's part of the internet.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

undeniable fact. Who knows how fat Europeans would be right now if their food was as cheap as ours, let's say 30 years ago.

Who knows, maybe that's what will help the US avoid a future of obesity. Who knew having a good food source would lead to this?

1/3 is much better. Actually PB, UK is close. So are quite a few other countries, Mexico, Greece, and Slovak Republic to name three. These places have people who eat too much in them. Some countries have people who love to overeat, apparently. Polish people, in general, don't seem to.

People are getting fat because they eat too much good food and don't have horses to shoe and places to walk to like they used to. Fields to plow with oxen. Now we drive to the store and get a Reese Peanut butter cup. Or maybe twenty of them.

Huh? Cajun as in the French descendants in Louisiana? It's funny because I've met a few Cajuns and they had an obsession with Italian sausage...

The ones that came from Acadia. Yep, they were French at some point with many stops in between Louisiana Bayou and France. They use Polish sausage in Jambalaya.

Kielbasa is a Polish sausage. They are different from other sausage types at the grocery store. It's a shortening of Polska Kielbasa. Because the word is Polish, the implication is there.

Mostly what you see is Mexican/South American and Asian outside the larger cities. There's plenty of pizza places and a few Italian restaraunt chains. Hardly ever see any French, Turkish or Lebanese. There's room for Polish if a brave soul started a franchise.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Americans generally don't like Polish cuisine compared to other ethnic food?

Americans will eat any kind of food. Even Sushi. It's just that Poles do not come to America and open Polish restaurants, not at the rate Vietnamese open Chinese restaurants, so it might appear Polish cuisine isn't popular but it is. Everyone loves to make Jambalaya with Kielbasa? Kielbasa is part of American culture.

Kielbasa is one of the favored sausages but you don't see it in restaurants so much, mostly at grocery stores. One reason you don't see so many Polish restaurants is Poles do not come here and open that many. Most the Mexicans and Asian restaurants are opened by Latinos and immigrants from Asia.

Food / Pancakes with cottage cheese? [40]

Crepe batter has more liquid and. Less flour. Pancake batter is thicker and has baking powder so the pancakes rise slightly while cooking in a skillet or on a griddle.
