Language / First sentence of the novel Solaris [12]

"shaft" makes perfect sense,

Technically I'm not sure if I like 'shaft' (usually szyb). I'd need to know more about ship vocabulary and have some idea of the physical layout (as described by Lem).

I think maybe the best option is to leave it out...

Language / First sentence of the novel Solaris [12]

O dziewiętnastej czasu pokładowego zeszedłem, mijając stojących wokół studni, po metalowych szczeblach do wnętrza zasobnika.

As literal as I can get to the original and just be a little awkward rather than flat out wrong.

At nineteen hundred hours ship's time I descended, passing by those standing around the shaft, by the metal rungs into the interior of the capsule.

Massaged a bit for the benefit of English syntax:

At nineteen hundred hours ship's time, I moved past those standing around the shaft and climbed down the metal rungs into the interior of the capsule.

And while here, I thought "zeszedłem" was an error and should be "zszedłem" is the non-standard form used on purpose?

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

post-communism that for you and your ilk seems to be just the thing you like about Poland

Okay, this is just terrible branding. The use of term "post-communist" as an insult is just etymologically wrong. Anything that came after the communist government is 'post-communist' (including dear comrade Jarek Kaczyński). It's a descriptive term and turning it into an insult implies that communism was better (as it might have been for many PiS-ters).

another one who is doing great in the post-commie reality.

Yes, I'm fine in Poland after communism since the communist period was tremendously destructive toward everything I value. If you're not in Poland it must mean you prefer the PRL!

I'm sure they have very good reasons which they'll expand on while mentioning their plans to move just any day now.... and they'll keep repeating that (while making sure to stay well away).

It's apparently the same with Russians and Putin, the most fevered pro-Putinists are Russians in the US...

News / An EU army. Impact on Poland [155]

I've heard some very weird spoken Slovak, some dialects sound very Ukrainish (with a Greek style gamma instead of a voiced h in words like kniha).

But I was referring more to official technical vocabulary, Czechs used to have exposure to it and don't anymore. This means, for example, that Czechs vacationing in Slovakia can get by on everyday topics but if they get sick and need to see a doctor then they're likely to have real communication problems.

News / An EU army. Impact on Poland [155]

Well splittng up the country was a poltiical project that did not have majority popular support in either part. Some Czech politicians wanted shut of the poorer Slovaks and the Slovak leader of the time wanted free reign to impose a neo-Soviet model. Fortunately the Slovaks wised up after a few years and kicked him to the curb but not in time...

Also, the move has not been good for Slovak, while Czech is still widely understood in Slovakia (with constant TV and other media exposure) Slovak has all but disappeared from public life in the CR and younger Czechs have real problems understanding it. The mutual intelligibility depends on constant exposure which was a feature of Czechoslovakia and not the Czech republic.

Life / What do you generally think about Poles? [62]

So is that what all your posts are about?

He basically wants Poland to agree to be a vassal state of Russia and for both countries (and maybe some others) help Serbia commit genocide against the Kosovar Albanians...

Some people here just think he's a harmless crank, but I think he really does have genocide in his heart.

UK, Ireland / Mixed feelings after moving from Poland to England [36]

I think for many adult people it may take many years to grasp Polish wel

I've never heard of a Russian speaker living in Poland who couldn't become very fluent (and understand almost everything) within about three months.

It takes Croatian speakers about two weeks to re-calibrate their ears and then they go from understanding almost nothing upon arrival to vast amounts (without special study, with study it's faster)

the government wants to bring in millions of Filipinos

I can see some problems, mostly related to how many Filipinos want to come to Poland and freeze their tropical @sses off for Polish wages (as opposed to German or Scandinavia....)

In terms of culture it's not a terrible clash (especially to the extent that they draw from the catholic majority) and they have pretty good work ethic on the whole and their record (AFAIK) on assimilation in Europe is pretty good. Not sure about the crime element...

But language will be an issue, Filipinos tend to be multilingual (usually English and a couple of Phillipine languages) but Polish is going to be an uphill challenge...

I heard of a plan (several years ago) to train Filipinas in Poland to be nurses but I don't think it went anywhere...

Classifieds / English/Polish speaking Canadian looking for work as Electrician in Poland [26]

your application to become a Polish citizen based on their citizenship at the time of your birth might be a bit shaky

On the other hand, isn't it super easy for people like potworek to get longterm residency (including the right to work) and after a couple of years to gain citizenship

Law / Lawyer familiar with EU law needed (to sue my employer in Poland) [65]

those of us who actively encourage Muslims with EU citizenship to move to Poland just because it's funny ;)

Nation wrecking for sh1ts and giggles? I have nothing against educated, secularly oriented muslims in Poland (am friends with a number of them) and guess what, they don't want large numbers of their countrymen arriving any more than your average bald marcher does....

human rights and my right to sue whom I believe has violated them

This forum is a very inappropriate place to ask for that information for reasons which you've just given.

My advice (worth very little) is to try to find a human rights organization in Warsaw like the Helsinki Foundation, they probably have experience in knowing where to send people

Language / Using the correct grammar is stopping me from progressing with Polish language [35]

[moved from]

radio and TV plus commie schools system erased much of the local differences in the way Polish is used

It's always been my impression that the post WWII spread of standard Polish and retreat of dialects was because that's what Polish speakers wanted. It never seemed forced, what are you basing that claim on?.

Even young Polish people tend to be prescriptivists, worrying about correct and incorrect forms in ways that English speakers... don't.

. That war had been brewing for some time and would have happened a one way or the other

Indeed, war had been baked into the system by that point, but under different circumstances might have played out to a somewhat less catastrophic effect...

And regardless, it's stupid to regard princip as anything less than the terrorist thug he was...

, it can a local pronunciation.

where, Lviv?

Do you know anything about Poland other than PRL and pyrogi.

.hmmm do you mean pierogi?

I have nothing against fighting against foreign occupation, but spur of the moment assassinations (with no idea of what could come of it) are monumentally stupid and brought about massive loss of life for no good reason.

What would have happened to Poland had a young hothead assassinated a high ranking member of the politburo in 1956? or 1968? or 1981?
