Why is walking on the wall dangeorus?

You can get two points for being imaginative. In fact walking on the wall attracts various rogues who try to shoot you down...

What monument contains such an element?

Must be some communist monument and the sculptor thought he'd put in a joke?

Nope. Quite the opposite, it is very anticommunist.

They painted profane words on the other side of the bins?

Yes, they sprayed the bins but not with paint.....

4What structure is it?

It is the New Warsaw Uni Library, a very beautiful place.

He is hiding from his mum who wants to wash him, I have no idea....

He is playing Warsaw leapfrog. When a passer-by comes along he leaps over them.

tai chi?

Nice guesses but the truth is more banal: the guy is teasing the park squirrels.

How do you tease a squirrel? Find an empty nut shell somewhere on the park path. Crouch down and extend your arm with the shell, offering it to the animal. When the squirrel takes the shell and finds out it`s empty, laugh out loudly.

molotov coctail? maybe WU monument?

Yes, Warsaw Rising monument.

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

It is an interesting trend in British media. Other papers also write about it:

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1080161/They-came-biggest-migr ations-history-But-credit-crunch-bites-mass-exodus-Polish-workers-begi ns.html

They came in one of the biggest migrations in history. But as the credit crunch bites, the mass exodus of our Polish workers begins

Yes.

1. Polish version of a baseball with live mice

Not quite. It`s mice playing hide and seek. A very exciting game: the grey guy is hiding, as you can see, and the white and black ones are looking for him....

Law / Laundromats in Poland? Good business venture or not? [90]

Pawian the 20 min thing has been discussed here...American machines work differently and clean just fine. But that is another good point. Euro washers take a long time and most people here wouldn't want to sit for a few hours doing wash.

Yes, a good point. Taking the washing to the laundry, waiting there, taking it back - it all requires a lot of time. Having a machine at home you just run it and take clothes out of it. That is why even poor people try to save enough money to buy a simple washing machine. The cheapest are available for about 850 zlotys - 330$.

Law / Laundromats in Poland? Good business venture or not? [90]

Do you think that opening a laundromat in Poland as a business venture is a good idea?

It wouldn`t prosper in my area. Most residents have their own washing machines.

Even students who rent flats have machines in them.

I used the laundromat while staying in an unfurnished apartment in New York for a month or so. I didn`t like it - the washing cycle lasted only 20 minutes, as far as I remember. I had an impression my clothes weren`t washed properly.

Looks like Błonia, perhaps it was brought by truck or assembled on site?

Your guess is quite correct. It was the ship made of beer aluminum cans for the annual Recycling Festival in Krakow.

Do you put the cheese in the middle, eehhh just for eh fun?

No cheese. I make a face and all creatures run for cover :):):)

What is the old man doing?

:):):) Actually, he is removing leaves and stuff from the vicinity of the bench where he is going to sit and relax, admiring the views around.

An American F - 5 with Vietnamese colours ? I've never been in Kraków's Aviation Museum, I must visit it some day.

Yes, it`s Freedom Fighter. North Vietnamese captured it when invaded the South and tried to adopt it to Soviet armament. Polish avaition experts received the plane to check out what can be done. Today it is exhibited in the Museum together with another plane, Dragonfly.

A pilgrimage to some Bloody Holy Place ?

To Częstochowa which is not bloody but a place respected by most Poles, even non-believers.

the 2nd photo down post 84 its an underground rave ... :D

It`s not underground. It is a salt cave, a place where you are supposed to get healthy by inhaling vapours from salt scattered all over the floor.

the third picture is a human catapult lol

Not human but a bucket catapult - you throw a bucket into the well with its help.

pukawka, hit kazdego odpustu od lat

Exactly. They have been producing the same design for 100 years now, or more.

Some things don`t change and that`s wonderful.

No, raspberries don`t smear hands in such a drastic way. Only blueberries do.

I am back from holidays at the seaside. It was a scorcher, indeed, but only during the day. At night it was chilly, the weather I like the best.

I promised to continue with riddles. Here they are:

All aviation experts, what plane is it in the Museum of Aviation in Kraków?
What is it? What was taking place here?
It is connected with these clocks
What is the pirate doing?
Where are these people going and why?

What`s this?
And this?
What are the women busy with?
What is this Polish booze?
I am leaving for the mountains tomorrow, it is going to last 2 weeks. So, one more go with riddles:
The last series of pics from summer holidays. Let`s relive those moments again.
What is frying?
What is it?
And this?
There`s hot water in the metal basin. What for?
What does the man sell?

What are the women holding and why?
What`s this?

Guys, I am leaving for the seaside tomorrow, the weather forecast is very optimistic, it will be a scorcher. When I get back, I will go on with more puzzles.

Sorry for not quoting your answers, but I am really short of time.

Hands were smeared with blueberry juice. Actually, we are going to the same place tomorrow, a beautiful forest with vast fields of blueberries. And hardly any people around...

The car with puzzling KR registration plates was indeed from Croatia. My hobby is collecting photos of foreign cars with misleading Krakow plates. So far I have taken two....

I don`t know where the bridge is. I would have to google, I admit.

Yes, the wanted animal is jellyfish. But where is it in the picture?

Clocks and controls are on a machine that floats on water in Gdynia.....

Some questions got correct answers before, so check the first page of this thread.

See you in a dozen days...

PS. The theatre is in Toruń and it has been built with EU funds.

Normally we don`t associate seals with such fangs as seen in the photo. Yet, they are typical mammal carnivores...

As a reward for your intellectual effort, here`s the next set of riddles from the seaside:

You can see this floral decoration in Gdynia. What does it present?

Where in Gdynia can you see these clocks and controls?

Where is the car with KR registration plates from?

There is one living creature here. What and where?

What happened to these hands?

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

I know that carp is treated as water rubbish in America. I have run into such opinions in other forums.

But Poland is different. We regularly eat all kinds of fish in our family, and frankly, if I have a choice of carp or salmon or trout, I will certainly choose carp. And the price of those fish is almost identical in Poland, with carp between cheaper trout and more expensive salmon.

That`s quite correct. It has to do with the intent of preserving the freshness of the fish, although not with God in mind. The tradition of keeping fish in the bath was strengthened in comunist times when, due to disorganised supplies or simple shortage, there were sometimes problems with getting fish for Christmas Eve. E.g., I still remember that one year a few of my class mates didn`t come to school because they had been standing in a line to the fish store till late evening or even early morning hours. Their parents told them to.

So, being a child of communism, eternally oppressed with such memories, I prefer to get my fish a day before Eve to avoid any unexpected surprises. Fish is in my bath and I feel sort of secure.

pickled gherkins?

Yes. I was amused to see them like that because normally pickles are in jars or even small wooden barrels.

OK, but let me exploit the subject of aquariums to the end.

Where in Poland can you see such a lamp?

More... Whose animal is this skull? What is it?

This bottom categorization of yours is a bit crappy, I am afraid.

Firstly, I have lived in this country for 40 years and seldom met a person who refused to eat carp.

Secondly, water bottom organisms belong to the most valued food. Example: lobster and oysters.

To clean the dirt from there bodies. Carp like to scour the bottom of the lake for their food,

Yes, that is a correct answer (partly). Carps grown in muddy waters might smell/taste of mud.
What is the other (last) reason?

so by putting the in the bath for a few days, it stops the fish tasting like dirt.

Yes, a few days should be enough to stop the fish tasting like dirt, however, they are also enough to start the family smell like dirt .....

they still taste like crap, no matter of they take a bath or not. nasty fish. :(

I and the majority of Poles don`t agree with you. Carp is a very tasty fish. A bit fatty, but that`s what I like.

While you are trying to figure out about carps, another aquarium riddle:

What is bathing in the fish tank and why?

Why do Poles keep fish in a bath(tub)?

Real Estate / Is there a Real Estate bubble in Krakow? [60]

Could that be because over 2 million people found employment elsewhere since their joining the EU? How would the figures look if all those that left returned?

Yes, if those goys hadn`t left, the figures would look different but not too much because since the access to the EU the Polish economy accelarated and a lot of new job positions were created.

Real Estate / Is there a Real Estate bubble in Krakow? [60]

:):) Not at all, I certainly missed a lot of important issues.... :):):) E.g., the saying which became popular not long ago: cheap property has already finished - tanio już było. I also forgot to mention that specialists estimate there is a deficit of about 1.5 million flats in the country.

You have been living in Krakow for 4.5 years, recently you have worked as a mortgage and property consultant/specialist, correct? So you know the market and real estate situation at first hand. What can you add to everything what was said here?

Real Estate / Is there a Real Estate bubble in Krakow? [60]

Why is real estate so expensive in Kraków?

It has always been so. Krakow rates as the second, sometimes third most expensive city in Poland, after Warsaw or Poznań. I can say it is snobbery - most Poles know Poland`s history and Krakow is considered a very attractive place. It sounds impressive when you say you live in Krakow. :):):) Besides, don`t forget multiple job opportunities, excellent schools, entertainment facilites ect.

Who can afford the houses/flats?

Firstly, the buyers are Poles. They have better jobs and earn more money every year, either in Poland or abroad. Of course they are not able to put the sufficient cash on the table, so they take bank loans. Banks are only too happy to give them, and before giving a loan, they make sure how to avoid losses. If a buyer can`t repay the loan, their property will be taken by the bank.

Secondly, another category of buyers are foreing investors. Yes, they had correctly predicted that after accessing EU in 2004, real property prices in Poland would rocket, just like it had happened in Spain and other countries before. They entered aggressively and bought a lot.

There are still more factors which make prices so high. The main problem is there are simply not enough flats, and it is a result of the lack of land. Cities linger with transforming arable land into construction areas. It is a matter of beaucratic regulations.

Guys, especially Vafunkoolo, stop talking about speculation. Let me remind you that Poland is a capitalist country and there is a free market. One can buy and sell whatever they want. Yes, there are certain restrictions, Lwowska mentioned 20 years` time, in Poland it is 5 years within which you can`t sell purchased property without paying profit tax.

But a free market means that the seller sets the price at the level which is attractive both for him and the buyer. Isn`t it so?

I wouldn`t count on the bubble to blow up, like in the States or elsewhere. Since January 2008, prices in Krakow went down by .....1%, and the experts say they will be stable for the next few years or will even go up a little higher.

I am sorry, guys.

But I am also quite satisfied because when I eventually decide to move from this noisy, crowded, polluted city, I will be able to swap my current flat for a decent house in the coutryside 50 km from Krakow.

Travel / My vacation trip to Poland (detailed description with pictures) [13]

What I didn't like at all was that on every possible building in a good location you could see billboards or other forms of advertising.

Yes, it is true. There are hardly any regulations concerning outdoor advertising. It is enough to rent a site and you can put everything you want.

Some of the outdoor advertising does look cheap. It doesn`t matter as long as it brings profit for the owners.

However, in many cases giant posters and billboards cover ugly building or walls. Like here:

Is this what you all lived like -

This video was taken last year, it reminds me of the dark ages -

Hmmm...do you really know what you are asking about?

The first video doesn`t load as it seems to be already removed from Youtube.

The other presents some old woman from Romania or another country whose language I can`t decipher.

Are you sure it is exactly what you wanted to achieve? :)
