News / Poland's Nationalists hold congress [132]

Fingers crossed that he does name a few names, eh?

I won't hold my breath.

It's the old PiS tactic - I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW THE TRUTH - so what's the truth - I KNOW YOU KNOW SO I WON'T TELL YOU!

Work / AVOID Thinkling/On The Ball language school [5]

I did enjoy ******* off one clown in Warsaw. What made life far worse for him was that he had the HR department of TPSA phoning him and demanding that he pays the teachers or else ;)

Poland is still not a free country

Yawn. Is that what you tell yourself in America?

Mass murderers and their followers are still in charge.

Could you name a mass murderer or a follower of a mass murderer in the Goverment?

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

He has just picked up the idea

Right before the local elections. It was forgotten about afterwards.

but overall it's not a bad idea

It's not a bad idea if you think destroying Natura 2000 areas is a good idea. Most sane people think otherwise.

you "expats" clearly know nothing about the actual issue

Is that why you keep avoiding the question of what cargo would be transported to Elblag and how?

inland water transport is nonsense when in fact it's very ecological and widely promoted in EU.

It certainly is nonsense when the inland waterways cannot be relied on for any serious amounts of transport. Poland doesn't have infinite amounts of money - it makes far more sense to make sure that Swinjouscie can accept Baltimax vessels than it does to create new seaports.

For what it's worth, I've found references suggesting that the current draft is limited to a mere 2.5m, and that the maximum potential is for 7.8m. Not worth it in the slightest.

In fact -

Length: 85m. Width: 15m. Draught: 2.3m

So we need to rebuild a railway bridge, build a canal (and infrastructure) and considerably improve the port. It might have been fine in the old days, but quite useless today.

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

You didn't even know that there is (and has been since centuries) a sea port in Elbląg, which is operating at a small fraction of its capacity due to problems with Russians

It's not much of a sea port - as far as I can tell, draft size is extremely limited.

If Kaczyński said that Poland need more express roads and Tusk that it doesn't, you would be here "proving" that express roads are outdated shyt

Except common sense goes a long way. What Kaczynski proposed was a mammoth waste of money - so much so that he appears to have forgotten about the idea already.

Life / Expat, immigrant, foreigner. Not all foreigners in Poland are expats. [84]

Is a squat more formalised than a bunch of homeless living together in abandoned buildings or allotment garden sheds? They probably couldn't be too structured because I should think the squatter lifestyle would attract those with anarchic leanings.

It depends. Some of them are well run, well organised places - but not all. The problem is that some of them are run by very standoffish people who have rich parents - the kind that Pulp's famous "Common People" criticised.

Some of them certainly are just places for homeless people to congregate, but others are flourishing cultural spaces. There's no hard rule.

Work / Corporate integration or blackmail in Poland's companies? [30]

In my experience they are worse than the plague 95% don't want to be there. There is also the point that forced class integration can be a disgruntling experience especially for the working class.

Mine are fine, but they are just fooling about, playing silly games with colleagues and drinking beer. Firing shotguns in the dark was one of the more...interesting things I've ever done.

The ones where people are forced into actually doing something like building things and getting wet/cold are no fun at all. I've heard that the latest craze is to put teams through miserable weekends where they're forced to exist in "extreme" conditions to bond as a team - fine and well for professional athletes, but for office workers?

I liked Tacheles. It showed what people could achieve together with very little support. True grassroots initiative.

Indeed, it had a certain charm about the whole place. What was interesting for me was that most of the artists were actually friendly and approachable - they didn't seem to have that sulky attitude that other places have.

The original one, Köpi, is still going, however it's less welcoming to visitors.

This is what I dislike about most squats - they claim to be open minded, but most of them are very closed minded in their mentality. It's what I loved most about Tacheles - they weren't pretending that they were doing anything other than squatting and selling their art. They were also very keen on simply being left alone - they weren't getting involved with all the childish politics that tends to occur in such places.

For me, it was a great shame that for all the money spent in Eastern Germany, money couldn't be found to keep Tacheles as it was. It was an oddity in a very odd city, and should have been preserved.

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

I can see you are the PF's Renaissance poster amd count marine engineering, port design, maritime shipping and overal marine management amongst a plethora of your areas of expertise.

Common sense and the ability to quickly appraise a situation is why I don't have to beg the Polonia for money.

Elblag requires considerable investment to even get it to a reasonable standard for a Baltic port. The cost of such investments were costed a few years ago as 260 million Euro - money that would be far better spent elsewhere, perhaps in promoting tourism to poor areas in Poland in general. Imagine how many agro-turstyka ventures could be funded for that kind of money?

I am far more mdoest. However, a projection shown on TV indicated that the Vistula Promontory could be cut through at different points. They wouldn't have to choose the proximity of Krynica.

Cutting through any of those areas would result in harm to the environment and would harm tourism immensely. Ever tried to find accommodation there in summer?

For what it's worth - Polish flagged vessels don't have any issues with transiting Russia anyway.

My suspicon is that you would have had no interest in the Elbląg issue if PiS had had not offered a bold proposal to save the port city and its people.

It wasn't a bold proposal, it was nothing but a cheap electoral bribe that Kaczynski had no intention of funding anyway. He had a distinct habit of promising things and then breaking those promises - and let's not forget about the 3 million apartments!

And conversely, if Shifty Eyes had proposed something, you'd be all for it. Am I right?

Who is "shifty eyes"? Another one of your made up names for politicians?

But Chrsitian Humanism did not. Next to God, man is the most important, his welfare and that of his family. Don't you find it sickening that those who are doing well and lack nothing in the material realm coudl be so selfish and callous not to see the plight of their fellow-man and fail to extend their compassion, empathy and tangible assistance to those nto as well off?

That sounds remarkably Communist to me. The whole redistribution of wealth, attacking the middle classes and attempting to make everyone equal.

The people fo Poland B, C, £ ot Ż, who haev had no say in where they were born, may be far better people than those wallowing in luxury in some glittery apartamentowiec

In Poland, there are opportunities for people from such places. I know several people from backwards villages who bettered themselves and became something - so there's no excuse. One of them is even ex-PGR!

That's why Poland deseprately needs PiS!

So that they can introduce Communism? Makes sense, given who the leader's father was.

When President Obama or any other leader announces something it doesn't happen the next day.

Perhaps you can explain why the PiS government saw figures collapsing. Perhaps they weren't really interested in Elblag at all?

The huge, complex machinery of state and economy does not immediatley react to the push of a button.

Strange. PiS certainly attempted to run it like that.

Many of the shortcomigns occuring during the all-too-brief glorious two years of the Fourth Republic had resulted from previous SLD blunders. And Poland will be suffering because of the PO's ill-considered measures long after the Platformers have been swept out of office.

In other words, blame everyone else but not themselves.

As for "glorious years" - you mean two years of corruption and abuse of power?

Curiously Jon, have a look at these figures : maritime.com.pl/port/indexp-en.php?p=ELBLAG

Scroll down to "cargo figures in statistics".

Why is it that 2005 (for most of the year, an SLD government) had quite high tonnage figures, then the figures collapsed in 2006 and 2007 during the PiS Government? Hmm...

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

Everything is not only about money, tonnage and ship size.

In this case, it is. If something isn't viable, then it isn't viable. Remember, Communism ended over 20 years ago.

There are people who know the price of everything but the vaklue of nothing!

I fail to see the value in a hugely expensive vanity project that would also result in the destruction of a Natura 2000 area. Those of us who know a thing or two about the environment (especially the beauty around Krynica) know better than to build such vanity projects there.

That's where PiS stands head and shoulders above all the tin-horn politicians, shady buisness types and their brainwashed toadies, becasue the welfare of the good people of Elbląg in this case comes first and foremost.

You mean that buying off the people of Elblag is more important than our environment?

Elbląg was a normally functioning seaport with a maritime-oriented citizenry until the Russiasn started pulling their fast ones.

You mean it was a seaport in previous times. Can you explain why Poland economically needs Elblag to exist as a port, and why 260 million Euro (and destroying the environment) is better spent there than in Swinjouscie?

An additional wndow on the Baltic would allow the city to thrive once again and with it the entire surronding area.

Except it wouldn't. Time is money, and the additional time spent having to get into Elblag versus being able to unload in Gdansk/Gdynia would make it unworthwhile. Destroying the Krynica area would also guarantee economic harm, not benefits.

Tell us Polonius - what would be the maximum draft size that Elblag could accommodate?

Isn't it strange how Jaroslaw Kaczynski has mentioned very little about the subject since then?

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

Got my numbers slightly wrong -

Swinjouscie can accept up to 13.2m at present. Ships up to 13.5m can access Swinjouscie (assuming no draft limitations in Swinjouscie) right now - but if the port is expanded, then Germany will sink Nord Stream lower. It seems that the only thing that the Germans are guilty of is not paying for something that wasn't needed right now.

News / Restoring the Port of Elbląg? [113]

I see the Nord Stream gas pipeline between Russia and Germany as a main obstacle to that proposal.I understand that bigger ships would experience some difficulties accessing Polish harbor.

It's a bit of a non-issue. The maximum size of ships that can access the Baltic Sea through the Great Belt in Denmark is 15.4 metres, while ships up to 15m can (safely, allowing 1.5m margin) can access Swinjouscie with the presence of Nord Stream. It would only require a slight lowering of Nord Stream should Swinjouscie expand - which is unlikely to be much of an issue for anyone involved as the work wouldn't be particularly complicated.

As it stands, Swinjouscie can only accept up to 13.4m as it is anyway. It seems that the Polish and German governments have more or less agreed that if Swinjouscie expands, then they will (in accordance with international law) stick Nord Stream deeper along a 5km section that Swinjouscie would require. All in all, a complete non-issue.

Food / Poland known for cheap food [7]

I know of Poles getting cheap flights to Doncaster or Liverpool to go to Primark etc for clothes

To be fair, Primark is ridiculously cheap compared to most European shops!

food can often be cheaper elsewhere too.

All depends what, I think. Certainly decent Asian food is far cheaper in Berlin than in Poland, but raw ingredients are cheap in Poland. There's a reason why meat is sold per kg in Poland and per 100g in Germany.

UK, Ireland / Western Europe is not Paradise after all (Polish doctors in the UK more popular) [75]

I see. Yes, my GP also complained about hypochondriac grannies and suggested introducing a small fee, like 15-10 zlotys, for a visit.

It would make a lot of sense - it's a well known phenomenon that some elderly people see the doctor as a social life.

Instead of charging however, I'd simply introduce a rule that non-urgent cases in non-working people are at the back of the queue. Let them have their social life in the waiting room, while making sure that they don't block the doctor.

Its a shame they forget to mention all the walk in centres that are available in the UK. Those where you arrive and take your turn; usually within 30 minutes where I live. But of course that spoils the story.

They exist in Poland too, I don't have a bad word to say about them.

Food / Poland known for cheap food [7]

i can find some things at the same price or cheaper in Berlin.

Some things, yes, but in general - Poland is much cheaper, particularly for meat.

Back home three times as much.

I checked the price of cherries in the UK yesterday - they were coming in at 5 times the price.
